Problems are all Pakistan's as daunting MCG looms

Big Picture: Pakistan search for inspiration

All we want for Christmas is a contest, right? Well, Pakistan will hope for a miracle. If they topple Australia at the MCG it would come close to that. After just about holding their own, to a degree, across the first three days in Perth, things unravelled quickly on the fourth, albeit the surface was tricky by the time Pakistan started their second innings.Related

  • Back at MCG, Carey will look to end year of up-and-down fortunes on a high

So they came to Melbourne somewhat battered and bruised, but at least had a slightly longer gap to collect their thoughts. They have played two days of cricket – whether that time at Junction Oval will make any significant difference is debatable – and have also lost two players to injury and illness.Despite Pakistan’s second innings collapse last week, their biggest challenge appears taking 20 wickets with what looks a fairly threadbare attack. If the top order can build on the starts they got in the first innings in Perth they can at least have hope of building a total, although Australia’s attack is relentless. There is barely a flicker of concern around the home side, and even the talk around David Warner has diminished after his 164. Now it’s all about the farewell, rather than whether he deserves it.When Marnus Labuschagne averaging 35 for the year is perhaps an area of concern, or whether Alex Carey can recapture the batting touch that brought him a maiden century this time last year, things are tracking nicely. Things are so stable that the MCG crowd won’t even be able to cheer on Scott Boland.A final, and not hugely uplifting note for Pakistan: last time they played a Test at the MCG they made 443, only to see Australia rattle up 624 (Warner 144 off 143 balls) and win by an innings.

In the spotlight: Marnus Labuschagne and Babar Azam

It’s been a lean year by Marnus Labuschagne‘s high standards with an average of 35. In Perth, he was lbw in the first innings having moved compactly to 16. He was given a working over in the second, including a painful blow on the hand, before top-edging a short ball. This time last year his Test average was 59.05 and now it’s 52.15. He will, no doubt, turn things around and Boxing Day at the MCG – a ground where he hasn’t had a huge amount of success – could be where it starts. At 181 for 3 in the first innings in Perth, Pakistan were making a good fist of it. Then Babar Azam edged Mitchell Marsh to Carey who clung on to the chance. Pakistan lost seven wickets for 90 and the game was done. There was nothing Babar could do about the wonderful delivery from Pat Cummins in the second innings, but Pakistan need him to find the groove that brought scores of 104 and 97 on the tour four years ago. “He’s still in his shell, not really playing his natural way,” Waqar Younis told ESPN’s show. “I know the bowlers are too good, it’s hard to get on top of them, but you have to find a way, good players do that.”

Team news: Australia unchanged…

Barring any late Christmas-dinner related injuries, Australia will be unchanged which means no place for hometown hero Boland who averages 13.80 at the MCG.Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Usman Khawaja, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Travis Head, 6 Mitchell Marsh 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Pat Cummins (capt), 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh HazlewoodPakistan have named a squad of 12 and will make a final decision on the XI at the toss. Mohammad Rizwan replaces Sarfaraz Ahmed as wicketkeeper. Khurram Shahzad has been ruled out of the tour with a rib fracture and Faheem Ashraf has been dropped. That means two of Hasan Ali, Mir Hamza and Sajid Khan will play. Sajid appears likely to be included unless the pitch looks better for four quicks and Agha Salman.Pakistan 1 Abdullah Shafique, 2 Imam-ul-Haq, 3 Shan Masood (capt), 4 Babar Azam, 5 Saud Shakeel, 6 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 7 Agha Salman, 8 Hasan Ali/Mir Hamza, 9 Sajid Khan, 10 Aamer Jamal, 11 Shaheen Shah Afridi

Pitch and conditions

The groundsman, Matt Page, has promised a well-grassed surface with pace and bounce – although the latter two factors may not reach Perth levels. Life has been tricky for batters at the MCG in recent seasons. But this pitch only has 6-7mm of grass compared to 10mm plus on previous Boxing Days and is less thatchy. The pitch has been under the covers since December 24 due to relentless rain on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The forecast is not ideal with a high chance of more showers on the first day more on the second, but an improvement after that. However, things can change quickly in Melbourne.

Stats and trivia

  • Travis Head needs 42 runs to reach 3000 in Tests
  • Steven Smith’s MCG average of 84.75 is second only to Don Bradman for those to have played at least 10 innings at the venue
  • Saud Shakeel needs 73 runs to reach 1000 – he has currently batted 15 times, and the record for Pakistan to that landmark is 20 innings by Saeed Ahmed
  • Since the start of the 2018-19 season, the MCG has the lowest Test batting average of Australia’s venues, other than Hobart which has hosted just one game.

Quotes

“It looks really good, fair bit of grass, probably a fair bit harder and not as green as last year, knowing it was potentially going to be under covers today and for a little bit tomorrow maybe, so we’ll see how it plays but it looks like a really good wicket.” “It was hard out there in Perth. But I still feel there were some positives that probably we didn’t do back when we were here in 2019. We don’t want to force people to play a certain way. But we’ve sort of outlined certain things that we want to do better.”

'Utter disgrace' – Rio Ferdinand savages Arsenal fan base for criticism that 'vilified, bullied and embarrassed' Noni Madueke ahead of £52m transfer from Chelsea

Legendary Manchester United centre-back Ferdinand has come to the defence of Madueke ahead of his £52 million (€61m/$71m) move from Chelsea. Ferdinand labelled the behaviour by a section of the Arsenal fan base as an "utter disgrace" and stated that he has "never seen anything like this before" while speaking about the negative reaction of some fans on social media.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since making a switch from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, Madueke has made 92 appearances for the Blues, scoring 20 goals. His performances have somewhat left fans wanting for more. Despite not lighting up the Premier League on a consistent basis, the 23-year-old has earned a surprise move to rivals Arsenal, joining them on a five-year contract. The move has attracted harsh criticism from a lot of Gooners, who have vilified the English international on social media. In fact, the hashtag #NoToMadueke has been trending on micro-blogging platform X (formerly Twitter). A petition to prevent Madueke from arriving at the Emirates Stadium has also been filed by the same fans.

  • WHAT RIO FERDINAND SAID

Taking to X, Ferdinand posted: "Noni Madueke. For a Young 23 year old English footballer to be vilified, bullied, embarrassed and totally strip down at a time when you’re meant to be celebrating a transfer worth £55 million. Yes a young kid with a dream about to secure a £55 million dream move to a club of his desire leaving a rival at that to be treated in this manner via section of the Arsenal fan base is an utter disgrace. Just put yourself in his shoes for one minute just put yourself in his parents shoes for one minute and just think of how that feeling must be. I’ll say it again, at a time as a player as a human as a family you should be celebrating. I just hope the people that are closest to him are around him and supporting him in the way that he needs right now.

"It’s fine for fans to disagree with signings or decisions made at their football club but the way some fans have publicly voiced their opinions and those who have gone a step further in publicly joining a petition for this player not to be signed by their football club is beyond me. I have never seen anything like this before, and I hope I don’t ever again. Like I said earlier just imagine this was your best friend, one of your family members, your brother, son…then tell me how would you feel if they were on the receiving end of this vulgar behaviour???

"By the way, This isn’t aimed at all Arsenal fans it’s just a small section who have become very loud unfortunately. I just hope the transfer goes through and Noni Madueke rams all of this negativity back down the throats of these impostors.

"Whatever happens from here good luck Noni."

The north London club confirmed they had secured Kudus' signature late on Thursday evening after the player completed his medical. The Ghanaian star has signed a six year deal. Spurs had an initial bid of £50m ($58m) rebuffed last week.

Thomas Frank's side are ramping up their efforts in the transfer window, as report Morgan Gibbs-White will complete a medical in N17 on Friday, ahead of a £60m ($70m) move. Spurs have triggered the release clause in the Nottingham Forest star's contract, with negotiations between all parties set to accelerate in the next 24 hours.

The 25-year-old midfielder joined Forest from Wolves for a then club-record fee of £25m plus add-ons in the summer of 2022. He has made 118 appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals. During his time at Forest, he has made his full England debut, winning four caps for the Three Lions. Gibbs-White's departure will cause further dismay for fans of the east Midlands outfit. Anthony Elanga is also on his way out of the City Ground, having agreed a £55m ($64m) switch to Newcastle.

Tottenham's attack is shaping up ahead of the new season. The permanent signing of Mathys Tel, and now the acquisitions of Kudus and Gibbs-White in the space of 24 hours is a real statement of intent for a club that has erred on the side of caution in the transfer market.

Atletico Madrid target Chelsea defender as Diego Simeone eyes Cristian Romero alternative after Tottenham snub offer for centre-back

Atletico Madrid have turned their attention to Chelsea’s Renato Veiga after Tottenham blocked their bid to sign Cristian Romero.

Tottenham refuse to negotiate for RomeroChelsea open to selling €35m-rated VeigaSimeone wants versatile defensive reinforcementFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

According to , Simeone and the Atleti hierarchy have now turned their attention to Veiga, the 21-year-old Portuguese defender owned by Chelsea. Veiga impressed on loan at Juventus last season and is reportedly open to leaving Stamford Bridge for more playing time. Chelsea are seeking up to £30 million ($41m) for his services.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Veiga has long been on Atletico's radar, dating back to his days at Basel. The club monitored him closely before he joined Chelsea in 2024, and they reignited their interest when he was loaned to Juve in January. Atleti are actively looking to fill the void left by Reinildo, and Cesar Azpilicueta, and Veiga fits the profile both in terms of potential and price.

Chelsea are currently overstocked at centre-back and see Veiga, 21, as a valuable but expendable asset. While highly regarded, he remains behind Levi Colwill in the pecking order and may be further marginalised by Chelsea's pursuit of Ajax defender Jorrel Hato. Veiga, who prefers playing as a central defender, was often deployed out of position at left-back or in midfield during his brief stint at Stamford Bridge.

TELL ME MORE

With Spurs blocking any approach for Romero, Simeone has instructed his club to work on alternate solutions. Veiga’s tactical versatility and comfort playing at left-back are major assets, and Atletico could move for him either on a permanent transfer or via a loan with an option to buy. Juve paid €4m for a half-season loan and wanted to keep him, but their financial situation prevented a permanent deal.
For now, Atletico are expected to open talks with Chelsea, buoyed by a good recent transfer relationship between the clubs, with deals like Joao Felix and Conor Gallagher in the past.

Los Rojiblancos remain front-runners to sign Veiga, but Bayern Munich's interest and Juventus’ admiration mean competition is high. Whether through a permanent deal or a structured loan, Simeone is determined to add a versatile defensive piece to his reshaped squad before the new campaign kicks off.

Stokes calls for DRS to scrap umpire's call

Ben Stokes has called for the Decision Review System (DRS) to scrap umpire’s call after England were left bemused by Zak Crawley’s second-innings dismissal in their defeat in the third Test against India in Rajkot.Crawley reviewed Kumar Dharamasena’s decision to give him out lbw to Jasprit Bumrah in the ninth over but left the field incensed, believing the predicted path showed the ball would be missing the top of leg stump. It was the second time Crawley has been on the receiving end of a marginal DRS call, after being adjudged leg before against Kuldeep Yadav in Visakhapatnam following a review from Rohit Sharma. Stokes called the decision “wrong” at the time. The England captain was seen alongside head coach Brendon McCullum seeking clarification from match referee Jeff Crowe after England’s 434-run loss. Speaking at stumps, Stokes said he was told the error was with the image produced, which showed the projected path of the ball just missing the top of leg stump. Hawk-Eye confirmed to Stokes the calculations themselves were correct, which predicted enough contact with leg stump to stay with the on-field decision.”We just wanted some clarity around Zak’s DRS when the images came back,” revealed Stokes. “The ball is quite clearly missing the stump on the replay. So when it gets given umpire’s call and the ball’s not actually hitting the stumps, we were a bit bemused. So we just wanted some clarity from the Hawk-Eye guys.Related

“It came back saying the numbers, or whatever it is that is, it was saying that it was hitting the stumps but it was the projection that was wrong. I don’t know what that means. Something’s gone wrong, so, yeah.”It’s not me blaming that on what’s happened here, like I didn’t last week. It’s just… what’s going on?England were also riled by Ollie Pope’s dismissal in the first innings. Originally given “not out” against Mohammed Siraj, the decision was overturned because the impact on leg stump was deemed conclusive. Watching live, the tourists assumed the on-field decision would stand.Stokes reiterated he did not think such calls were the reason England are now 2-1 down in the five-match series. But he stated his preference that the system needs to be changed, starting with umpire’s call.”We’ve been on the wrong end of three umpire’s calls this game and that is part of DRS. You’re either on the right side or the wrong side. Unfortunately, we’ve been on the wrong side. I’m not saying and never will say that’s the reason why we’ve lost this game, because 500 is a lot of runs.”It is not something you pin down to result of the game. Sometimes when you are on the wrong end of those decisions it hurts but that is part of the game. You want them to go your way, sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t”You just want a level playing field. The umpires have an incredibly hard job as it is, especially in India when the ball is spinning. My personal opinion is if the ball is hitting the stumps, it is hitting the stumps. They should take away ‘umpire’s call’ if I’m being perfectly honest. I don’t want to get too much into it because it sounds like we are moaning and saying that is why we lost the Test match.”Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum chat with match referee Jeff Crowe•Getty Images

Stokes’ original comments about the accuracy of the DRS during the second Test prompted Paul Hawkins, the creator of Hawk-Eye’s ball-tracking technology, to defend the system and the processes in place.”There isn’t [even] a one percent chance of it being wrong,” Hawkins told the Sunday Times. “For every DRS [incident], we do screen-grabs which show everything the [Hawk-Eye] operator shows. This is automatic, we can’t manipulate it, and that immediately goes to the ICC [the game’s governing body] as part of the quality control process.”There are also two independent tracking systems. The cameras are the same, but the operators do their calibrations and the manual bit independently. This provides back-up in the unlikely event that one crashes. Even if there is an lbw shout, let alone a review, the person that plays the review to TV [must check] before anything goes to air that both trajectories give the same result, and are hitting the stumps in the same place.”It’s not a fully automated system, but a lot is done to eliminate human error by having checks, training and this process of two people doing things independently, [which] has pretty much always been there.”

Alejandro Garnacho in trouble after driving to Manchester United training in 'illegal car'

Alejandro Garnacho has been caught driving to Manchester United training in an untaxed and illegal car as speculation over his future continues.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Garnacho has been caught by driving a car that is untaxed and therefore not legal to drive. The Argentina international is thought to have arrived at Carrington after head coach Ruben Amorim's departure, with his future seemingly lying away from Old Trafford.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The United Kingdom government's MOT registry shows tax has not been paid on the car having been due all the way back in October. The punishment for such breaches is a possible out of court settlement alongside a fine of £30 with one-and-a-half times the outstanding tax amount. If Garnacho does nothing, the situation could escalate to the point of a criminal offence at the magistrates' court, with the penalty either £1,000 or five times the amount of tax chargeable – whichever is the higher fee.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Alongside fellow outcasts Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia, Garnacho has been told he can only use United's training facilities after 5pm, once the rest of the playing squad has departed. There hasn't been much movement in securing outgoing transfers for that quintet, though Garnacho is said to be attracting interest from Premier League sides like Chelsea.

Garnacho will hopefully settle any dispute with the UK authorities over his untaxed car soon, but where his future lies remains to be seen. He has had a chaotic summer which has included taking shots at United over their treatment of team-mate Rashford.
