Rohl’s own O’Riley: Rangers in talks to sign “box-to-box” sensation

There were no doubt fears that it would merely be Russell Martin 2.0 at Rangers, although Danny Rohl has quashed the doubters following a promising start to life at Ibrox.

Saturday’s thumping comeback win over rivals Celtic ensured the German coach has now picked up 29 points from his first 12 Premiership games in charge, losing just once so far.

It has been a different story on the continent, yet Rome wasn’t built in a day, with the Gers’ latest young appointment from south of the border proving far more fruitful.

With just six points separating the Glasgow side and league leaders Hearts at the Premiership summit, now is the time for Rangers to back their man and hand Rohl the appropriate tools to mount a real title charge.

If recent reports are to be believed, such work is already underway at Ibrox.

Rangers launch enquiry over January deal for midfielder

The January window is already almost a week old, yet Rangers have yet to strike thus far, albeit with the midfield ranks seemingly one area that Rohl is keen to strengthen.

Indeed, it has been reported in recent days that Motherwell’s Elliot Watt is on the club’s transfer radar, with the 25-year-old widely viewed as the “best midfielder in the league” so far this season.

Watt, however, isn’t the only midfield man on Rohl’s agenda, with Italian outlet Il Secolo XIX – via tuttomercatoweb – suggesting that talks have been held over a move for Emil Bohinen.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report notes that the Gers have made an enquiry over signing the Norwegian playmaker this month, with the 26-year-old – who is currently on loan at Venezia from Genoa – potentially to seal another loan swoop in the coming weeks.

As per the piece, Bohinen is expected to make a ‘final decision’ over the coming days, with Rangers firmly in the mix for his signature.

Why Bohinen could be Rohl's answer to Matt O'Riley

Any move for the Scandinavian talent could well be somewhat left-field, although as another English-born, elegant left-footer, he could perhaps emulate the success of a certain Matt O’Riley in Glasgow.

The London-born, Denmark international was plucked from MK Dons by Celtic back in January 2022, going on to become a key figure under both Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers over the next two years or so.

In all, the relative unknown quantity went on to rack up 62 goals and assists in 124 games in all competitions at Parkhead, prior to moving on to Brighton on a £25m deal in the summer of 2024.

A left-footed, 6 foot 1 midfielder, like Bohinen, O’Riley’s key strength was his box-crashing threat in the final third, notably scoring 18 Premiership goals in 2023/24.

Perhaps, Bohinen can follow suit elsewhere in Glasgow, with talent scout Jacek Kulig having described him as a “box-to-box” asset, while likening him to current Arsenal menace, Mikel Merino.

Formerly a Norway U21 international, it’s fair to say it’s been a difficult period for the wantaway star of late, having failed to score or assist a single goal during his time with Genoa and Venezia.

That said, he did score three times in just 12 games in Serie B for Frosinone, with the case of O’Riley highlighting why it is worth looking lower down the pyramid for a raw diamond.

Of course, at 26, Bohinen isn’t exactly a player for the future, although there is real potential there if he is able to find a settled home, having once chalked up 19 goals and assists in 73 games for Oslo outfit, Stabaek.

O’Riley had to navigate his own rocky path to Celtic, after being let go by Fulham before moving to Milton Keynes in England’s third tier, with his skill set and physicality ultimately proving a perfect fit for Scottish football.

Hopefully, the same could be true for Bohinen if Rohl and co can wrap up a deal in the near future.

“Immense” manager willing to take over at West Ham amid Nuno future update

An “immense” manager is now willing to take over as West Ham United manager, with Nuno under pressure after the recent heavy defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

West Ham's survival chances take hit in defeat at Molineux

On paper, a trip to bottom-placed Wolves, who had been without a Premier League win all season, was the perfect opportunity for West Ham to get a much-needed three points on the board, but they came up short, suffering a 3-0 defeat at Molineux.

The Hammers once again failed to close the four-point gap to Nottingham Forest, with their hopes of avoiding relegation taking another hit, and Nuno issued an apology to the fans in the wake of the defeat, which extended his side’s winless run to nine games.

The manager said: “I have to apologise to the fans. It was embarrassing.

“There’s not much I can say other than we are sorry. We are sorry because what we showed was not good enough.

“We need results, we need points. It is a tough situation and nobody expected this performance. Today was the worst performance that we have had.”

It has since emerged that the 51-year-old is now under growing pressure at the London Stadium, given that he is losing the support of the dressing room, with players being left confused by the training methods and starting XI selections.

As such, West Ham may have to start thinking about potential replacements before too long, and it has been revealed former boss Slaven Bilic would be willing to replace Nuno in the dugout, should David Sullivan & co sack their second manager of the season.

That is according to a report from the Sun on Sunday (via Sky Sports), with Bilic available immediately, having been out of work since leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Fateh back in August 2024.

"Immense" Bilic may not be the answer for West Ham

Former Aston Villa player Lee Hendrie has waxed lyrical about the Croatian in the past, describing him as “absolutely immense”, but West Ham should have some reservations about making a move for their old manager.

He's keen on the move: West Ham now eyeing "incredible" £18m English ace

There has been a new update on the Hammers’ pursuit of a defender.

The 57-year-old hasn’t managed in the Premier League since his stint in charge at West Bromwich Albion, being dismissed after taking just seven points in the opening 13 games of the 2020-21 campaign.

Since then, the Split-born manager, who prefers a 4-2-3-1 system, has also managed Watford, but he failed to deliver promotion, being sacked in March 2023, at which point the Hornets were outside the Championship play-off places.

West Ham fans will have some good memories of Bilic’s previous period at the helm, finishing in seventh place in the 2015-16 campaign, but he has failed to deliver any success in quite some time, and appointing him could be viewed as a step backwards.

Where does he really fit best at Liverpool FC?

Liverpool looked to have picked up one of the bargains of the January transfer window when they signed Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea, but after an extremely bright start to life at Anfield, he seems to have gone off the boil in recent weeks, with manager Brendan Rodgers seemingly unsure how best to use him, calling into question quite where he fits in the side in the long-term.

Whenever signing for a new club, it’s important to hit the ground running, and if you’re a striker, preferably bag an early goal to prove the doubters wrong and Sturridge did exactly that, getting off the mark in the team’s 2-1 defeat away at Old Trafford before following that up with one more in the 5-0 hammering of Norwich at home, which added to his debut goal in the FA Cup against Mansfield made him the first Liverpool player to score three goals in their first three appearances for the side since Ray Kennedy achieved the same feat in 1974.

Already the talk was centred on what a great deal Rodgers had pulled off and why Chelsea, with just Fernando Torres and the recently signed Demba Ba, felt the need to ditch such a clearly talented player. The question marks over his application and work-rate were dispelled by a series of vibrant attacking displays, full of creativity, awareness and tactical versatility and he seems to be striking up something of a relationship with fellow forward Luis Suarez.

[cat_link cat=”liverpool” type=”list”]

However, flash forward and there’s a case to be made at the moment that the system has evolved without him during his recent short spells on the sidelines with niggling thigh and hamstring injuries. He’s missed three of the team’s last seven league outings due to injury and during one of those games away at Wigan, Suarez managed to grab a hat-trick.

That can be no coincidence and in his first five appearances, of which the club scored 15 goals, Sturridge recorded an impressive 89% pass completion rate, created 11 chances for his team-mates and scored four goals with a shot accuracy of 62%, all evidence of a player clearly in form.

In his last three outings, the team have picked up four points, scored just four goals and the 23-year-old England international looks to have gone off the boil to a degree, with his pass accuracy dropping to 79%, his shot accuracy way down at 57% and the simple fact that he failed to find the back of the net. Peaks and troughs in form are inevitable consequences of niggling injuries, so it’s effectively difficult to tell which is the Sturridge the club have got on their hands for the next few years, while it can’t be easy to transition to a completely new side mid-season, so in that respect he deserves a great deal of credit.

Nevertheless, it’s his starting position that is the most troubling issue to ponder, because the current Liverpool side looks a lot more balanced without him and starting Philippe Coutinho and Stewart Downing either side of Suarez down the flanks, both looking to drift inside in a role that Rodgers usually refers to as ‘inverted wingers’.

During the game against Southampton, a 3-1 defeat against Mauricio Pochettino’s side who are quickly carving out a reputation for themselves as a team to watch for the future, Liverpool seriously struggled against their high pressing style and weren’t at the races all day, with the back four and midfield both abject in what looked to be the team’s worst performance since Rodgers took over in the summer.

But it’s when you realise that the side switched to something approaching a more traditional 4-4-2 formation, certainly more so than at any other time during Rodgers’ short tenure so far that the situation arises where the team’s shape is being compromised to fit in Sturridge. Coutinho and Downing both started on the flanks again, but much further back than usual, with Joe Allen and Steven Gerrard taking up the central positions.

The result was a disjointed and toothless attacking display, with Suarez unsure of whether to drop off Sturridge or continue to act as the main man in the lone central role through the middle. Whereas before the two dovetailed beautifully, now they were playing like strangers, miles apart from one another and unable to pool together any sort of coherent threat. It was painful to watch.

With that in mind, considering Suarez is currently the Premier League’s top scorer with 22 goals and is enjoying the finest season of his club career in England, is messing with a system that’s brought the best out of him really the ideal scenario? Would it not be better to fit in Sturridge around him for the time being, possibly taking up a wider role similar to the one he occupied at Chelsea?  Much like the midfield conundrum has resulted in something of a mess, Rodgers seems puzzled as how to best integrate him in the side again at the moment.

You have to wonder with little more then local pride still to play for, with a Merseyside derby coming up and David Moyes’ side sat a place above Liverpool in the league, whether it wouldn’t be worth trying Sturridge in a new role. His tactical flexibility after all was one of the main reasons he was targeted in the first place, at least until he finds his feet again in the starting eleven, otherwise he may continue to flounder and frustrate in equal measure.

West Ham bombshell involving Luis Diaz

Speaking to the press, West Ham United manager David Moyes has shared some very interesting transfer news involving Liverpool forward Luis Diaz.

The Lowdown: West Ham fail in summer bids…

According to reliable sources, the Hammers failed in multiple bids to sign attacking talents in last-minute January moves.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-3/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Along with Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, West Ham tried to sign Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata last month, with Moyes also refusing to give up on playmaker Jesse Lingard (Sky Sports).

It appears that the Irons, by admission of their manager, weren’t exactly done there, as Moyes lifts the lid on another last-gasp attempt to sign a forward in January.

The Latest: Moyes makes Diaz admission…

According to West Ham’s manager, the east Londoners were actually ‘very far’ down the line in their bid to sign the Colombian star before Liverpool swooped in.

Moyes said on Friday (via Daily Mail): “We were quite far down the line to sign him from Porto. My understanding is Liverpool were going to come in for him in the summer, and I was going to try to get him in January.

“I don’t know if us trying to get him in January affected Liverpool’s decision but he’s a really good player.“I really hoped that he was going to choose West Ham. We didn’t get him in but our ambition to sign the best players to improve West Ham is good. I want to make us better and I don’t want it to be mediocre if I can help it.” The Verdict: Very interesting…

Reports at the time detailed that Liverpool hijacked Tottenham’s deal to sign the player, but as this news emerges, it appears that they also ruined West Ham’s hopes of signing the 25-year-old.

Hailed as ‘exceptional’ by Reds manager Jurgen Klopp, Diaz would have been a brilliant signing for the Hammers, especially for the initial £37m that Liverpool ended up spending.

Before his Premier League move, he had notched 14 goals and five assists over 18 Portuguese top-flight appearances for FC Porto this season.

Indeed, Diaz may well have been a truly brilliant capture for the Irons.

Palmer: Kane was told he could leave Spurs

Harry Kane was told by Tottenham chief Daniel Levy that he could leave the club last summer, according to former England defender Carlton Palmer.

The Lowdown: Kane linked with Man City move

The 28-year-old was subject to plenty of scrutiny in last summer’s transfer window after he was heavily linked with a move to Premier League champions Manchester City.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It was reported that Pep Guardiola’s side made a stunning £125m bid for the striker, which was sensationally rebuffed by the north London club. The England international revealed his desire to join the Sky Blues and even skipped Spurs training in protest to try and force through the transfer.

The Latest: Palmer’s claim about Kane and Spurs

Palmer has claimed that Kane was informed that he was allowed to leave the club before Tottenham had a last-minute change of heart, scuppering his plans to join Manchester City.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, the 56-year-old proclaimed: “I have it on good authority that Harry Kane was told that he would be allowed to leave the club last summer, so the club have gone back on their word, in particular Levy’s gone back on his word. I wouldn’t be signing a new contract for that club.”

The Verdict: Worrying claim

This claim should come as a big worry for Lilywhites fans. As reported by The Evening Standard, Kane is contemplating whether to push for a move in this summer’s transfer window.

With the news that he was once granted permission to leave the club, the attacker may be thinking that a move away could still possibly be on the table. Therefore, if Man City come back in for him in the coming months, he could very easily decide to replicate his actions of last summer in attempt to seal his Spurs exit.

This would be disastrous for Antonio Conte, especially as Kane has seemingly regained some of his best form, having been awarded man of the match in two of his last three Premier League appearances and improved his scoring return after a slow start to the campaign.

If he does decide to leave, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the manager follow suit – and the same could happen if the Italian departs first.

Southampton’s 3 worst players v Watford

Southampton crashed to a second home defeat in four days on Sunday afternoon, going down 2-1 to Watford at St Mary’s.

Two first half goals from Cucho Hernandez ultimately secured victory for the relegation-threatened visitors, and while Mohammed Elyounoussi halved the deficit on the stroke of half-time, the Saints were unable to complete the comeback on the south coast.

Unsurprisingly given the result, there were some players among Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team who will feel disappointed with their performances today. We’ve pored through the numbers from statistical specialists Sofascore to pick out who were the three poorest performers in a red and white shirt, with the caveat that only those who featured for 45 minutes or more are eligible for classification.

Armando Broja (6.4)

The Albanian came on as a half-time substitute for Will Smallbone but was unable to inspire a Southampton rescue act in the second half.

Broja completed only six passes in his 45 minutes on the pitch, lost four of his five duels, gave the ball away five times and touched the ball only 14 times.

In a particularly alarming indictment of his performance, the 20-year-old striker did not even take one shot throughout his time on the pitch, with his team in need of an equaliser.

Mohammed Salisu (6.2)

The Ghanaian centre-back had a day to forget, his weak backpass inadvertently setting up the opening goal for Hernandez and ultimately proving costly to the Saints.

The 22-year-old’s statistical return from the match was also disappointing. He lost nine of the 15 duels that he contested, gave away possession 19 times, was dribbled past on two occasions and misplaced four of his eight long balls.

Romain Perraud (6.1)

He may have netted a sublime goal in the recent FA Cup win over West Ham, but the Frenchman was well below his best today at St Mary’s.

The 24-year-old came off second best in six of his 12 duels, misplaced 15 of his 43 passes, lost possession 23 times and was also dribbled past on one occasion. He ended the day as Southampton’s lowest-rated player, and Hasenhuttl will no doubt hope for better from him next time out.

Aston Villa: Ashley Preece shares Carney Chukwuemeka boost

Aston Villa will have Carney Chukwuemeka available against Leeds United this evening, Ashley Preece reports.

The Lowdown: Chukwuemeka’s absence

Chukwuemeka, labelled as ‘outstanding’ by Paul Merson following his full Premier League debut this season, has missed the last two fixtures with a slight injury.

Steven Gerrard’s side have recorded back-to-back wins without the 18-year-old and are now gearing up for a trip to Elland Road. A win will take Villa into the top half, and Chukwuemeka could well make a return to the matchday squad.

The Latest: Back in the group

Preece shared an injury update on Birmingham Live on Wednesday morning following Gerrard’s pre-match press conference.

When it came to Chukwuemeka, he said that the midfielder ‘will join the group’ ahead of the clash with Jesse Marsch’s side.

The Verdict: Another boost

Gerrard now has a near fully fit squad to choose from, with Ezri Konsa and Lucas Digne also available after missing out on the weekend.

The update on Chukwuemeka is therefore another welcome boost, and you’d expect he could return to the bench in Yorkshire.

That will give Gerrard another option to call upon, with the boss also needing to make calls on Konsa and Digne following Calum Chambers and Ashley Young’s impressive displays against Southampton last time out.

Celtic: Ben Doak closing in on Liverpool move

Celtic winger Ben Doak looks likely to join Liverpool, according to The Athletic.

The Lowdown: Follow Barkas and Ajeti?

The 16-year-old is yet to pen a professional deal at Parkhead and was linked with Liverpool and Chelsea during the January window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy-2/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Doak has made two senior appearances in 2022, with the Hoops looking to tie the winger down to a long-term deal in Glasgow, however, it looks as if their attempts will prove unsuccessful.

Exit updates have emerged this month on Vasilis Barkas and Albian Ajeti, and it seems as if Doak is also set to be on the move.

The Latest: The Athletic drop Doak update

The Athletic’s James Pearce shared a story on Monday, suggesting the Reds were closing in on a deal for Doak.

The draw of working with Jurgen Klopp has reportedly been pivotal in a decision, with the Reds only needing to fork out minor compensation in a cut-price transfer.

The Verdict: Not ideal

As Kieran Devlin mentions, Doak’s exit will hurt the Hoops, who have struggled in recent years to keep their young talent in Scotland.

A number of the club’s most talented academy players have left in recent years, with Doak now set to link up with former Celtic goalkeeper Liam Hughes at Liverpool.

Another exit could also be on the cards over the coming months in Karamoko Dembele, with the 18-year-old’s professional deal set to expire at the end of May.

The Hoops will be desperate to put a stop to their youngsters leaving before making a serious impact in the first-team, but it appears as if Doak’s mind is already made up.

Celtic may be ruing Urhoghide call

In our Loan Watch feature, The Transfer Tavern takes a look at how Celtic defender Osaze Uroghide is faring during a short-term loan spell at KV Oostende.

The lowdown

Celtic paid just over £200,000 to sign Urhoghide from League One outfit Sheffield Wednesday last summer.

But he found opportunities hard to come by under Ange Postecoglou, with his one and only senior appearance coming in the dead-rubber Europa League game against Real Betis in December.

On Deadline Day, Celtic opted to loan him out to Jupiler Pro League outfit Oostende for the remainder of the season.

The latest

It took a couple of games, after the loan move had gone through before Yves Vanderhaeghe handed Urhoghide his debut.

That came in a 3-0 defeat against KV Mechelen, with Urhoghide substituted off at half time.

It was certainly an auspicious start, then, but the defender was perhaps played out of position at right midfield and he’s admirably put it behind him.

He completed the full 90 for the first time against Sint-Truiden on 26 February and hasn’t missed a minute of action since.

His strongest performance to date came against Anderlecht, the side who have been crowned Belgian champions more than anyone else.

He won nine out of 11 ground duels – a hugely impressive 82% – in addition to making five interceptions and even creating a chance from his centre-back berth.

That earned a SofaScore rating of 7.1/10, the second highest in the side.

Overall, he’s recorded nine successful aerial duels, eight clearances, 11 interceptions and nine tackles, whilst also demonstrating his comfort in possession by completing ten long passes and five dribbles (71%).

The verdict

So, does Urhoghide potentially have a future at Celtic?

Well, under the loan agreement, Oostende will have the option to sign him permanently in the summer.

And if he can continue to impress Vanderhaeghe enough to hold down his place in the XI, then they will surely trigger it.

After all, he’s a player they’ve been following ‘for quite some time’, according to club president Gauthier Ganaye, and they ‘firmly believe in his talent’.

There are potentially clear parallels with Jack Hendry, who left Celtic for Oostende and then earned a move to Club Brugge, where’s he’s played six Champions League games this season and seen his Transfermarkt value climb to £5.4million (well above the £990k Celtic banked).

Celtic writer John McGinley has applauded the player’s hunger, suggesting that he’d ‘do anything for Ange Postecoglou’, and perhaps he deserved more of a chance to show what he was capable of.

Rangers handed Ianis Hagi boost

A promising Rangers injury update has emerged on Gers talent Ianis Hagi with the Ibrox forward progressing well at present.

What’s the latest?

The Rangers midfielder’s dad, Gheorghe Hagi, has opened up on his recovery following the season-ending knee injury the Romanian international suffered in January against Stirling Albion.

Football Scotland quote him as saying that his son is “looking very well” as he continues with his rehabilitation.

Van Bronckhorst buzzing

This update will surely leave Gio van Bronckhorst relieved heading into the summer. Gheorghe’s initial three-word claim suggests that his son has not suffered any setbacks in his recovery and is still on course to be back for the 2022/23 campaign.

At the age of 23, it could be easy for Hagi to get himself down in the dumps about his injury nightmare. Instead, it seems as though he has taken it in his stride and is now working to get himself back in the best possible condition to attack next season with all his might.

Van Bronckhorst will, therefore, be delighted with his attitude. He will also be excited to have the talented playmaker back in his side later this year as he is a proven Premiership performer who can take control of a game on his own at times.

In the league this season, Hagi averaged a superb SofaScore rating of 7.10 – scoring two goals and creating 1.5 chances per game. This shows that he was able to consistently deliver top-class performances as he regularly created openings for his teammates to score from.

He also caught the eye in the 2020/21 title-winning campaign as he produced seven goals and 11 assists in 23 Premiership starts. The mercurial playmaker is a difference-maker at this level and has proven it over the course of two seasons, which is why van Bronckhorst will be buzzing that his recovery is going well.

It is now down to Hagi to continue making progress to ensure that he does not suffer any setbacks before the next season gets underway. He can be an important player for the club domestically and potentially in the Champions League or Europa League next term if he can get back to his best, as shown by his statistics, and this latest update suggests that he is well on his way to doing that.
