Newcastle United, after once again qualifying for the Champions League, had a busy summer transfer window ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

The saga of the summer was Alexander Isak’s eventual move to Liverpool, however, the Magpies also broke their transfer record by bringing in Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart. But how much do Newcastle’s star players pick up in wages? Here is a list of the Magpies squad’s salaries, per Capology.

Here's a detailed look at Newcastle's top 10 earners: 10 Anthony Elanga £100,000 a week

The first 2025 marquee summer signing at St James’ Park was Anthony Elanga, with the winger arriving from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £55m.

The pacey forward starred at the City Ground which caught the eye of Eddie Howe and co, with Elanga signing a long-term deal.

9 Jacob Ramsey £120,000 a week

Also joining from a Premier League rival in 2025 was midfielder Jacob Ramsey, who cost Newcastle an initial £39m from Aston Villa.

The versatile midfielder is in line to pick up £6.24m per season at St James’ Park, the same figure as three other Magpies stars.

8 Kieran Trippier £120,000 a week

Kieran Trippier was the first signing of the Howe era, and it’s safe to say that it’s been a success on the whole. The former Tottenham full-back immediately settled into the team and became one of the group’s core leaders seemingly overnight.

In his first season at the club, he helped to guide them to safety before guiding them to European football the season after. Trippier’s deal expires in 2026.

7 Aaron Ramsdale £120,000 per week

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale joined Newcastle on a season-long loan from Southampton in 2025 after the Saints were relegated from the Premier League.

Brought in to rival Nick Pope, Ramsdale earns more than his fellow countryman, and there is the option for the Magpies to make a move permanent in 2026.

6 Sandro Tonali £120,000 a week

Sandro Tonali returned to the Newcastle squad after serving a lengthy ban for breaching betting rules, with the Italian since becoming a mainstay in Howe’s side.

The midfielder joined the Magpies in 2023 from AC Milan in a big-money deal, and those at St. James’ Park will be hoping he can continue to star in the famous black and white stripes.

5 Nick Woltemade £132,500 a week

Newcastle’s all-time record signing, Nick Woltemade arrived at St James’ Park shortly before Isak departed for Liverpool.

In a deal worth up to £69m, the German eclipsed Isak as Newcastle’s most expensive addition, and Woltemade made himself an instant hero by scoring the winner on his Premier League debut.

4 Yoane Wissa £140,000 a week

Yoane Wissa was signed with minutes to spare in the summer on deadline day, hours after Isak’s move to Liverpool was announced.

In similar fashion to Isak, Wissa went on strike at Brentford to force through a move to Newcastle, and he’ll earn £7.28m per season at St James’ Park.

3 Joelinton £150,000 a week

Joelinton, who initially arrived as a forward from Hoffenheim for a then club record £40m fee, has been transformed into a midfield powerhouse at St James’ Park.

The Brazilian is now one of Newcastle’s biggest earners after signing improved terms in 2024. He’s under contract until 2028.

2 Anthony Gordon £150,000 a week

Boyhood Everton fan Anthony Gordon moved to St James Park from the Toffees in January 2023 with a hefty price tag of £45m. Moving to a new club with such a price tag can be challenging enough for many players, but the controversy surrounding his move only brought more scrutiny as he handed in a transfer request to get out of Goodison.

After a rather lacklustre start to his career on Tyneside, Gordon dazzled in his first full season and has rarely looked back. The winger was rewarded with a new contract in October 2024 that is thought to have more than doubled his wages, with Gordon now one of Newcastle’s highest earners.

1 Bruno Guimaraes £160,000 a week

Top of the charts as Newcastle’s biggest earner is Bruno Guimaraes, although compared to other Premier League clubs, £160,000 per week isn’t a huge amount.

Guimaraes was awarded a five-year deal back in October 2023 after his move from Lyon, and he has proven to be worth every penny of the £40m fee.

Berta has hit the jackpot on Arsenal signing who's as exciting as Dowman

There is a lot to be happy about as an Arsenal fan at the moment.

While the games against Liverpool and Manchester United weren’t great, Mikel Arteta has got his team playing a more entertaining brand of football this season, which has seen them score 11 goals in five games so far.

Moreover, the attacking additions to the team seem to be adapting well, with Eberechi Eze getting an assist on his first start, Viktor Gyokeres already scoring three, and Noni Madueke looking like a serious threat on the right.

On top of all of that, Hale End seems to have produced another superstar in Max Dowman, although there is another youngster in the squad who could have just as high a ceiling.

Max Dowman's incredible rise

While those with a real knowledge of academy football would have been aware of Dowman for some time, most fans started to hear about him last season.

In just 23 appearances across a number of youth teams, totalling 1945 minutes, he put the ball in the back of the net 19 times and provided five assists for good measure.

In other words, the Chelmsford-born gem averaged 1.04 goal involvements per match, or one every 81.04 minutes, which is utterly unreal and lends credence to talent scout Jacek Kulig’s bold claim that he is the “most exciting prospect” he has seen “since Lamine Yamal.”

The club itself clearly view him as a future star as well, as he was soon training with the first team, and while he wasn’t able to make any senior appearances last year due to rules over his age, no such barriers exist this season.

He made an instant impact on the pre-season tour, winning a penalty in the match against Newcastle United and then impressing against Tottenham Hotspur and Villarreal.

The strong performances have carried on into the season proper now, with him winning another penalty against Leeds United and then being trusted to come off the bench away to Liverpool.

In all, it feels like the sky is the limit with Dowman, which could also be said for another of the club’s new young stars.

Arsenal's youngster with as much potential as Dowman

What’s so amazing for Arsenal is that, at the moment, you could argue there are a number of players with ceilings as high as Dowman, from Ethan Nwaneri to Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, in this instance, the player in question is a summer signing: Cristhian Mosquera.

The young Spaniard cost the club just £13m back in July, and it would be fair to say he has since made that fee look utterly absurd.

Already described as a “backline leader” last October by respected analyst Ben Mattinson, the towering defender looked pretty good during pre-season, but it was against Liverpool where folk began to take notice.

He was forced on in the fifth minute to replace the injured William Saliba, and while most youngsters would wilt under such intense pressure, he played the next 85 minutes as if he was a seasoned professional with a decade of experience, making three clearances, blocking two shots, and making four tackles.

He was even more impressive against Nottingham Forest, as on top of displaying his defensive nous, the level of opposition allowed him to show fans his ability on the ball and passing range.

In 94 minutes of action, the game-breaking “monster,” as dubbed by one analyst, took 92 touches, completed 75 passes, won 100% of his ground duels and completed eight defensive actions.

Then again, despite it being his Champions League debut, the former Valencia gem was utterly unfazed by the game on Tuesday night, not giving Bilbao even a sniff of a goal.

Ultimately, just as Dowman looks like he could be a generational attacking talent, Mosquera looks like he has everything needed to become a world-class defender, and it might not take long at all.

Newcastle’s “explosive” star once looked like Shearer, now he needs to go

Newcastle United’s start to the 2025/26 Premier League season has been one of promise mixed with frustration.

Eddie Howe’s side opened with a cagey 0-0 draw against Aston Villa, a match in which they dominated large periods but lacked a cutting edge.

Their second fixture produced drama at St James’ Park.

Coming from 2-0 down against Liverpool, Newcastle looked set to have completed the comeback before Rio Ngumoha’s 100th-minute strike condemned them to a 3-2 defeat.

The pattern continued away at Leeds, another 0-0 stalemate where chances were few.

It wasn’t until the fourth game that Newcastle finally claimed three points, grinding out a laboured 1-0 home victory over Wolves.

That was followed by another goalless encounter, this time away at Bournemouth – a match that underlined both Howe’s tactical experiments and the team’s ongoing attacking malaise.

In those two goalless games against Leeds and Bournemouth, Howe trialled different variations of a back three.

Yet, the results suggest the system still requires tweaking, with Newcastle struggling for rhythm in possession and fluency in the final third.

Newcastle stifled by the system against Bournemouth

Against Bournemouth, Howe’s team took to the field in a 3-4-2-1, aiming to nullify the hosts’ high-pressing 4-2-3-1.

Nick Woltemade, the record signing, led the line.

The German forward showed neat touches and even had a penalty appeal waved away, but he still appeared to be adjusting to the physical demands of English football.

In midfield, Howe rotated heavily. Lewis Miley and Joe Willock replaced Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton, but neither was able to stamp authority on proceedings.

Newcastle’s lack of thrust was reflected in the numbers: just 0.14 expected goals (xG) compared to Bournemouth’s 0.46.

Defensively, there were nervy moments.

Tino Livramento was caught at the back post, allowing David Brooks to score what looked like the opening goal before it was ruled out for offside.

Malick Thiaw also rode his luck, avoiding what could have been a second-half red card.

The raw statistics painted a bleak picture for Newcastle: 4 shots to Bournemouth’s 11 and 390 completed passes to the Cherries’ 498.

One positive came in the form of Lewis Hall, who looked composed on his return to the starting XI after a lengthy injury layoff.

The former Chelsea man provided balance on the left flank and showed glimpses of the technical security Newcastle have been missing in recent weeks. The same can’t be said of one of his teammates, however…

Bournemouth draw the latest example of Willock’s decline

Amid Newcastle’s struggles, the spotlight inevitably fell on Joe Willock.

The midfielder was handed his first league start of the season at Bournemouth, but his subdued display was another reminder of how far his career has drifted from the explosive start he made at St James’ Park.

Willock first arrived on loan from Arsenal in February 2021, tasked with helping Steve Bruce’s side escape relegation.

He wasted no time, scoring on his debut in a 3-2 win over Southampton before embarking on a remarkable run of goals in seven consecutive matches – equalling Alan Shearer’s long-standing record from 1996.

By the end of that season, Willock had eight goals in 14 games, second only to Callum Wilson despite arriving mid-season.

Bruce urged the board to make the move permanent, and in the summer, Newcastle obliged with a £25m deal.

Willock went on to contribute significantly in Howe’s first full campaign, helping Newcastle secure a fourth-place finish and a return to the Champions League.

But since then, injuries have derailed his progress.

He missed 38 matches in 2023/24 and another seven last season, with one content creator on X remarking that the “explosive bursts of pace” once central to his game have all but disappeared.

The Bournemouth match showed the scale of his struggles.

In the 62 minutes before being replaced by Harvey Barnes, Willock registered no shots, 32 touches, and just 12 successful passes from 15 attempts (80%), as per Sofascore.

Defensively, he was combative, winning six of nine ground duels, but he lost both of his aerial contests and offered little drive going forward.

His match rating of 6.8 reflected an industrious but uninspiring performance.

For a player once hailed as Newcastle’s answer to Shearer in terms of clutch goalscoring, his trajectory has become symbolic of the team’s own attacking issues.

Howe will hope that minutes in the upcoming League Cup clash against Bradford can help Willock rediscover some rhythm, but at present, he looks far from the dynamic midfielder who carried Newcastle to safety just four years ago.

"Have no right" – Chris Sutton shocked by what Wirtz did during Crystal Palace v Liverpool

After another frustrating display in a Liverpool shirt, Chris Sutton took aim at Florian Wirtz as Federico Chiesa’s late strike could not rescue a point against Crystal Palace.

Crystal Palace 2-1 Liverpool: Eagles join late show

Somehow, some way, Liverpool thought they had done it again. It had been the late late show under Arne Slot and for the second time, it was Federico Chiesa who stepped from the bench to rescue the Reds, it seemed. He found the back of the net deep on in the second half and looked to have capped off an excellent week which started with two assists against Southampton in the Carabao Cup.

And then Palace decided to spark a late show of their own through Eddie Nketiah to hand Liverpool their first defeat of the season. It has been coming for some time, some will argue, and the Reds were beaten at their own game.

There’s no escaping that there were another warning signs for Liverpool, however, who were really testing just how long they could keep this up. The answer as far as Slot will be concerned would have been not much longer. The Dutchman would have been well aware that any repeat of his side’s performance in previous weeks could end in far worse results.

It’s also worth noting that it was once again almost an unexpected hero who emerged and not the big-money men. Alexander Isak had a couple of chances that he, at his best, should be scoring. Wirtz, meanwhile, struggled off the left and only showed some signs of life in the middle of the park in the second period. Once again, in truth, the German had an afternoon to forget.

It’s now six Premier League games without a goal or assist, with patience beginning to run out around those watching on. Those at Anfield know the talent that they’ve signed, but he will need to show more than glimpses of his talent sooner rather than later.

BBC pundit Sutton was less forgiving than some too, slamming Wirtz for one moment against Palace.

Chris Sutton takes aim at Wirtz

Taking aim at Wirtz, Sutton was particularly shocked by the German’s struggle in front of goal. The former Bayer Leverkusen man did his record little good by missing a chance that he should have converted, ghosting in behind only to shove a close-range effort right at Dean Henderson.

It’s wake-up call for Liverpool. Slot’s side simply must improve. They remain top of the Premier League, but there are several problems for them to fix before they square off against Chelsea in their next league outing next weekend.

Whether that means a decision is coming for Slot regarding Wirtz is the award question that must be asked at Anfield.

Leeds star who's "struggled" is in danger of becoming Farke's new Spence

Leeds United play host to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at Elland Road on Saturday in their last match before the international break.

Their clash with Spurs means that there will be a reunion for Daniel Farke and some of the players with former Leeds loanee Djed Spence, who has emerged as a regular starter at full-back for Thomas Frank.

The England international spent the first half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Elland Road from the Premier League side, but it did not quite work out for him in West Yorkshire.

Why it did not work out for Djed Spence at Leeds

After playing just seven matches in the Championship, Leeds opted to send him back to Spurs in the January transfer window and Farke suggested that his professionalism played a part in that decision.

When asked about why Spence’s loan was cut short, Farke said: “Listen, in the summer we came here in order to create and to bring new values and to create a new culture within the club and when we speak about a player if he’s on here on a permanent or a loan deal, we have expectations and these expectations are in several topics important.

“Obviously it’s important, the potential and the quality of the player but also it’s professionalism, it’s discipline, it’s workload on and off the pitch and also the soft skills, so also if he’s positive and committed, good for the group and engaged with these topics, paint then more or less a picture.”

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Whilst Spence’s professionalism may have been one of the reasons behind why the loan did not work out, the form of Archie Gray at right-back and Junior Firpo at left-back also played a major role because it meant that the loanee could not break into the XI.

Now, there is a player in the current Leeds squad who is in a similar situation and is in danger of becoming Farke’s next Spence at Elland Road.

The Leeds player who is in danger of becoming the next Djed Spence

The Championship champions agreed a deal worth up to £10m to sign James Justin from Leicester City in the summer transfer window to add quality to their full-back department.

Up to £10m on a 27-year-old back-up full-back may not have been the best allocation of funds, given that the Whites did not sign any right-wingers or number tens to bolster their attack in the window.

Speaking on talkSPORT, presenter Jeff Stelling said: “James Justin has been a very good player, good enough to win England caps, but he’s struggled for form in the last couple of seasons, I think it’s fair to say.”

He added: “I think they need to bring a Jack Grealish type figure in, someone who you know, the fans can really get excited about.

“And however well Justin does, the fans are not going to get excited about signing a full-back.”

The comment from Stelling about the defender’s struggles was interesting. Justin made two errors that led to goals as Leicester were relegated from the Premier League last season, per Sofascore, which shows that Leeds were not signing a player who was in great form or full of confidence.

As you can see in the table above, the English full-back has only played 22 minutes of football since being signed for an initial fee of £8m from the Foxes.

Gabriel Gudmundsson and Jayden Bogle appear to have the full-back positions locked down, as Gray and Firpo did when Spence was at the club, and Justin is in real danger of struggling for minutes throughout the campaign unless injuries present him with an opportunity.

This is why the former Leicester man may follow the same path that Spence and Isaac Schmidt, who left to join Werder Bremen on loan this summer, followed as back-up full-back options under Farke.

ByKelan Sarson Oct 2, 2025

Justin will be hoping that he can get a chance to impress and nail down a place in the starting XI by producing quality performances, to avoid getting to January and having to make a decision about his game time, as Spence and Leeds had to do in 2024.

Man Utd readying £70m bid for "world-class" star, could join in Mainoo swap

Manchester United are now readying a £70m bid for a “world-class” midfielder, who could join as part of a Kobbie Mainoo swap deal.

Mainoo fails to force his way into Amorim's plans

It is clear that Ruben Amorim isn’t the biggest fan of Kobbie Mainoo, who is still yet to start a Premier League game this season, despite Man United making an awful start, with their most recent setback coming in a 3-1 defeat against Brentford.

With Casemiro suspended, Manuel Ugarte came into central midfield, alongside Bruno Fernandes, and Mainoo once again had to settle for being a substitute, with the 20-year-old being brought on for the final 25 minutes of the game.

Having been unable to force his way into Amorim’s plans, there have been suggestions the Englishman could be ready to move to a new club this winter, and rivals Manchester City have even been named as surprise potential suitors.

That said, with Amorim now under significant pressure, receiving criticism from club legend Wayne Rooney, the midfielder may soon have a new manager, who is more willing to give him consistent game time.

For now, however, INEOS are persisting with the 40-year-old, and Mainoo’s future remains up in the air, with a report from Spain revealing the youngster could be used as part of a swap deal for Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde.

Man United are said to be preparing an offer of around €80m (£70m) for Valverde, but they may be willing to use their youth product as a makeweight in negotiations, in order to reduce the cost of the operation.

However, Real Madrid are currently showing little interest in sanctioning a departure, with the midfielder emerging as one of their most ‘trusted’ players, so it remains to be seen whether a deal will be possible.

"World-class" Valverde could take Man Utd's midfield to next level

Let’s make it clear — Man United definitely shouldn’t consider letting Mainoo leave, given that the England international has previously shown he has what it takes to perform at the top level, excelling in the 2024 FA Cup Final.

That said, signing the Real Madrid star for straight cash should still be a very attractive proposition, having proven himself over a number of years in La Liga and the Champions League, with Jurgen Klopp once dubbing the maestro “world-class”.

Casemiro has made it clear he is unreliable, with the Brazilian naively getting himself sent off in the 2-1 victory over Chelsea, and at 33-years-old, United are in need of a long-term replacement in the middle of the park.

Sean Jarvis to step down in autumn as Leicestershire CEO

Former Huddersfield Town FC executive credited with transforming team’s fortunes on and off the field

Sean Jarvis, Leicestershire’s CEO, will stand down in the autumn•Leicestershire CCC

Sean Jarvis, the chief executive who has overseen Leicestershire’s renewed fortunes both on and off the field, has announced he will be standing down from his role in October, after five years at the helm.Jarvis joined Leicestershire from Huddersfield Town FC in 2020, with cricket contending with the Covid-19 lockdown, and the club itself at a low ebb. They finished rock-bottom in all three county competitions in 2019, having been unable to sign an overseas player for the T20 Blast due to financial constraints. His predecessor, Karen Rothery, stood down after just 12 months at the helm, with the club recording an operational loss of £132,000 for 2018-19.However, Leicestershire are currently riding a wave of rare success. In 2023, they landed their first List A silverware since 1985 when they won the Metro Bank One-Day Cup, while they are currently top of Division Two of the County Championship after three wins in five games.”I’m delighted to have played my part in the ongoing journey of Leicestershire County Cricket,” Jarvis said. “When I joined in 2020, I set out a five-year plan and I’m pleased to have been able to deliver on that.”I’m proud to have overseen the one-day cup success, which was our first trophy in 14 years, plus the club’s first Boca [Business of Cricket Award] and the club is also currently top of its division. It hasn’t been without challenges, but that’s wider than the club itself and more linked to the game as a whole.”Off the field, Leicestershire is set to receive a significant share of the Hundred equity sale, as and when the Nottinghamshire-based Trent Rockets complete their £40 million negotiations with Todd Boehley’s Cain International group.”I’m proud to be departing with the club in such a great position for the start of a new era,” Jarvis added. “We now have a team that can compete on all fronts. Things are looking extremely positive for the future, both on and off the pitch. I’ll continue to follow the club and wish everyone all the best for the future. I’d particularly like to thank the staff for supporting me during my time at the club.”The club has already begun its search for a replacement, with John Thorpe, the club chairman, praising Jarvis’ role in transforming Leicestershire’s fortunes and strengthening its role in the local community.”Sean has been fantastic from day one,” Thorpe said. “He’s had to contend with a lot, successfully steering the club through the Covid times and carefully managing the operational side of the business. It’s been a challenging time for the whole game in recent years and we’ve come through it with the potential now for an exciting future.”We’re excited to expand our corporate, commercial and partnership opportunities. Leicester is quite a unique sporting city with the prominence of cricket, rugby, basketball and football here and we need to harness that community. We’re really excited for the new era and the opportunities that it will bring.”

Pogba joined Monaco officially in June but has yet to play for the first time since his doping ban was reduced to 18 months from four years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. He was poised to make his debut at the weekend but suffered a small fitness issue, and his manager, Sebastien Pocognoli, has insisted that the midfielder is "smiling".

He told reporters: "Paul is training but not fully. I think the process for Paul is a process to make everything step by step. [On Monday] he joined with the group for the first time under my coaching.

"He was smiling, he was enjoying and interacting with the players. For me, this is the first step and this step can take days, can take two to three weeks and then we can build on this through performance and the consistency. So, yeah, that is the first step and here we are. That is the situation, but I am very pleased, for sure, to see him on the pitch."

Monaco face Premier League opposition in the Champions League on Wednesday when they take on Tottenham at the Stade Louis II. It is Pocognoli's first fixture in charge of the club, and they will have to win without Pogba. He will likely be donning some of his own designer clothes in the stands.

While he will not be playing this week, he may well be able to make his return when Monaco face Toulouse in the league this weekend. They are currently seventh in Ligue 1.

No Dorgu, new role for Amad: How Amorim can save Man Utd job & keep 3-4-2-1

A familiar sense of Deja vu crept in during the aftermath of Manchester United’s dismal derby defeat. Hadn’t we seen this one before?

Sitting in the Sky Sports studio at the Etihad, greats of United’s past – Roy Keane and Gary Neville – carried out the bi-weekly post-mortem, analysing and debating the future of yet another post-Sir Alex Ferguson manager.

The treble-winning duo had just been forced to witness what has become a trademark display of the last few years for the Red Devils. A performance with moments of encouragement, albeit with glaring problems at both ends of the pitch.

A team that can’t score and simply can’t defend, as their -3 goal difference can attest to, won’t get very far amid what has become an increasingly competitive Premier League.

These are not new issues for the Old Trafford side, although new lows and new depths have been reached in the Ruben Amorim regime. 31 points from 31 top-flight games in charge, with a worse win ratio than any permanent United manager post-World War II.

The Portuguese coach has been steadfast in his unwillingness to alter the much-maligned 3-4-2-1 system, but something simply has to change. How about tweaking the starting lineup, Ruben?

1

GK – Senne Lammens

It would be unfair to shift too much of the blame for Sunday’s defeat onto starting goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, although the Turkish international hardly inspired much confidence yet again.

Indeed, a heavy touch in the early knockings almost gifted an opening to Erling Haaland inside the area, while the 27-year-old was far too easily beaten by the Norwegian’s dinked effort to make it 2-0.

While Gianluigi Donnarumma grew in the face of Benjamin Sesko bearing down on goal in the first half, Bayindir simply shrunk. Now is the time to give new man Senne Lammens a go instead.

2

RCB – Leny Yoro

The weekend clash may not have been Leny Yoro at his best, having been withdrawn on the hour mark, although the Frenchman has been a real bright spark in 2025, after making his competitive debut for the club in December.

With pace, power and poise, the teenager has all the makings of a world-class centre-back, with reports even suggesting that Amorim views him as the club’s ‘next Rio Ferdinand’ due to his innate composure in the backline.

While his best work did come as a left-sided centre-back last term, it would be wise to continue with the ex-Lille starlet on the opposite flank.

3

CB – Matthijs de Ligt

A starter in every league game so far this season, Matthijs de Ligt has begun to grow into his role as a starting option at United, even if he was hardly error-free up against the relentless Haaland last time out.

Seemingly made for that central role in the back three, the Dutchman has the edge over Harry Maguire right now, with the sight of the Englishman failing to catch Manchester City’s lethal number nine having become far too familiar of late.

Maguire remains a valuable squad member in Amorim’s ranks, although Sunday again outlined his weaknesses. This is De Ligt’s time now.

4

LCB – Ayden Heaven

While Lisandro Martinez may look to slot back in amid his return from injury later this year, the derby defeat showcased yet again the need for increased mobility in the backline.

The diminutive Martinez can’t exactly offer that, although young Ayden Heaven certainly can. At just 18, the ex-Arsenal sensation is not yet the finished product, although as Wayne Rooney stated last season, he looks like he’s “been there for years”.

The speed and strength of Heaven could then see Luke Shaw finally ousted at left centre-back, with the long-serving defender looking worryingly off the pace at the Etihad. Skipped past by Jeremy Doku, and overpowered by Haaland, the 30-year-old has surely outstayed his welcome in Manchester.

5

RWB – Noussair Mazraoui

One potential positive from the weekend defeat was the return of Noussair Mazraoui, with the Moroccan international putting in a typically accomplished performance at right wing-back, prior to his second-half withdrawal.

A player viewed by those at the club as one of their best signings in years, the former Bayern Munich man has the versatility to slot in as a centre-back, although he could make the right flank his own instead.

Elegant in possession and an industrious figure out of it, Mazraoui is the type of player that this team needs – they are a better side with him in it.

6

CM – Bruno Fernandes

The debate surrounding Bruno Fernandes will continue to rage on. Should United have sanctioned his Saudi switch? Does Amorim need to reinstate him in the number ten berth? Can he ever thrive as part of a midfield two?

While the skipper’s inability to track Phil Foden for the game’s opener showcased his shortcomings in that deep-lying berth, the lack of adequate alternatives ensures that this experiment must be continued.

A man who recorded 38 goals and assists last term while largely operating in this role, Fernandes has the quality to make it work. He just needs a suitable partner.

7

CM – Kobbie Mainoo

Pep Guardiola gripped the top of his head in frustration as Kobbie Mainoo breezed his way through the City midfield, a second-half moment that outlined just why Amorim has to find a permanent role for the 20-year-old in his side.

At 33 and into the final year of his contract, Casemiro’s time at Old Trafford is nearly up. As for Manuel Ugarte, the Uruguayan warrior is up for the fight, although lacks the technical prowess to match – notably ranking in just the bottom 17% of European midfielders for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref.

Mainoo isn’t perfect – Amorim has stressed that more than most – although in a side that stinks of chaos, he can be the player to bring that much-needed sense of calm.

8

LWB – Amad

The player to have made the most touches in the penalty area on Sunday? It was not Haaland no, it was Patrick Dorgu with 12.

The young Dane was the major outlet for the visitors, although despite his regular involvement, the 20-year-old’s lack of end quality was stark. As per Sofascore, he lost the ball on 17 occasions and successfully completed just one of his five attempted dribbles.

In truth, the lack of an alternative has ensured the January arrival remains in by default, although Amorim could be bold and unleash Amad in his place. A natural left-footer, the Ivorian has been trialled on the opposite flank, but why not give him a chance on the left instead?

9

RAM – Bryan Mbeumo

Perhaps the only bright spark in the early weeks of the season, and in the derby, Bryan Mbeumo has been a rare astute signing if recent evidence is anything to go by, having netted against both Grimsby and Burnley last month.

Had it not been for the remarkable reach of Donnarumma, that tally would have been bolstered on Sunday, with the Cameroonian also unable to sort his feet out from close range after Amad’s pull back.

A mixture of silk, speed and devastating finishing, the 26-year-old is everything United have been crying out for. Let’s hope he doesn’t get dragged down by Amorim’s sinking ship.

10

LAM – Matheus Cunha

This selection, in the short-term, would be fitness permitting, although if available, new man Matheus Cunha is already a shoo-in for the starting XI, even if goal contributions have been lacking to date.

On another day, the Brazilian could have had a brace away at Fulham, with it hopefully not too long before he is fit and firing again.

That left-sided number ten berth looks to be made for the former Wolves talisman, with Mason Mount’s inability to stay off the treatment table ensuring that, for all Amorim’s praise, the unfortunate Englishman just can’t be relied upon.
