Wolves making late drive for £25m CB who Newcastle have been pushing to sign

Wolverhampton Wanderers are now making a late drive to sign a £25m defender, who Newcastle United have been pushing to sign, reporter Simon Phillips has revealed.

Wolves eager to bolster defensive options

Following Nelson Semedo’s departure, one of Vitor Pereira’s most pressing tasks is to bring in a new right-back before the Premier League season gets underway in less than two weeks’ time.

It was recently revealed that the Old Gold have agreed a £14.8m deal to sign Sevilla defender Juanlu, but they are yet to get it over the line, given that the 21-year-old wants to join Serie A champions Napoli, who have also been named as potential suitors.

Borussia Dortmund’s Ryerson is another option on the shortlist, and contact was recently made with the right-back’s agents, although there could be competition for his signature from newly-promoted Sunderland.

Given that Semedo’s contract has now expired, bringing in a new right-back is of key significance, but Pereira may also be keen to bolster his options in central defence, given that his side shipped the most goals of any side to avoid relegation last season.

Even better signing than Arias: Wolves now keen to land "rapid" £30m winger

Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters are already excited about the signing of Jhon Arias, but could Wolves secure an even better winger worth £30m?

According to Phillips (via Molineux News), Wolves are now making a late drive to sign Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi, with the defender also a target for Newcastle United, who have been pushing to get a deal over the line for quite some time.

Chelsea are open to sanctioning Disasi’s departure this summer, with it previously being revealed the Blues could hold out for £25m, but up to this point they have mainly been receiving loan to buy offers.

"Monster" Disasi could help solve Wolves' defensive woes

Once described as a “monster” by journalist Rahman Osman, the French defender has been unable to force his way into Enzo Maresca’s plans, but he managed to impress during a loan spell at Aston Villa during the second half of the 2024-25 campaign.

It has been suggested that Villa wanted to sign the 27-year-old on a permanent basis, having impressed staff with his mentality and dedication to training during his time with Unai Emery’s side.

The five-time France international made ten appearances for the Villans, during which time he impressed in possession of the ball and in the air, placing in the 95th percentile for his pass completion rate per 90, and the 90th percentile for aerials won over the past year.

Wolves have already made major improvements to their attack this summer, bringing in the likes of Jhon Arias and Fer Lopez, so it could now be time to work on strengthening their defence, and Disasi has what it takes to be a success at Molineux.

Cesc Fabregas has 'deep knowledge and uncommon curiosity' as Pepe Reina hails ex-Chelsea & Arsenal star's potential after working under Como boss last season

Cesc Fabregas has been described as "very professional and passionate" by his former Como head coach and ex-Spanish national team-mate Pepe Reina. The former Liverpool custodian spent the 2024-25 season at Como, under the orders of Fabregas. The 38-year-old has become one of the best young managers in the world, helping then newly-promoted Como finish 10th in the Serie A table last season.

  • Fabregas among the most sought-after young brains

It took only one season of top-flight management for Fabregas to earn a reputation as one of the most exciting young coaches in the world. After Como earned promotion to Serie A for the first time since 2003, the club took a big gamble by appointing Fabregas as the head coach. And he dispelled all doubts by helping Como earn a more than respectable 10th-placed finish in the league. RB Leipzig were rumoured to be interested in the Spaniard, and so were Inter. Meanwhile, the English media have already started to link him as the successor to Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

A coach who loves to develop youngsters

One of the most striking aspects of Fabregas' management style is his keen interest in promoting and developing young talent. Last season, he pushed the club to sign Nico Paz from Real Madrid, with the Argentine becoming one of Serie A's best players in the 2024-25 season. Another player who has really taken off under the 38-year-old is Jacobo Ramon, another La Fabrica graduate.

  • Reina full of praise for Fabregas

Speaking on Radio Bruno's program, Reina said: "He's a well-rounded coach, with a deep knowledge of football and an uncommon curiosity. He watches countless matches to constantly seek out new insights. He's very professional and passionate, and his staff is highly qualified."

Bangladesh one step away from ODI World Cup qualification after beating West Indies

Nigar Sultana and Nahida Akter headlined Bangladesh’s maiden win against West Indies in any format

Mohammad Isam22-Jan-2025Bangladesh are one win away from direct qualification for this year’s Women’s ODI World Cup after they beat West Indies by 60 runs in the second ODI in Basseterre on Tuesday. It was Bangladesh’s first win against West Indies in any format as they levelled the series 1-1 after West Indies had won the first game by nine wickets on Sunday.Bangladesh are now in seventh place in the ODI Women’s Championship points table with 21 points, the same as New Zealand who are placed sixth. The top five teams from that table and hosts India will gain direct entry into the ODI World Cup and the the third ODI between West Indies and Bangladesh will be the final game of this Women’s Championship cycle. If Bangladesh win the final game or there is a no result on Friday, they will overtake New Zealand and get direct qualification for the ODI World Cup for the first time.West Indies are languishing in ninth place with 16 points and are out of the race for direct qualification. The remaining four teams from the Women’s Championship table will play in the ODI World Cup qualifiers along with two more teams for the remaining two spots for the main event. On Tuesday, captain Nigar Sultana led the way with 68 as Bangladesh were bowled out for 184 in 48.5 overs. She struck five fours in her 120-ball stay, bringing up her fifth half-century in ODIs. Nigar was the anchor of the innings, adding a 51-run stand with Sobhana Mostary for the fourth wicket. Offspinner Karishma Ramharack took four wickets for the first time in ODIs, while fast bowler Aaliyah Alleyne picked up three wickets.Nahida Akter led the Bangladesh charge with the ball, taking three wickets, which included two of West Indies’ top three. Marufa Akter, Rabeya Khan and Fahima Khatun all took two wickets each as the hosts were bowled out for 124 in 35 overs. Shemaine Campbelle top scored with 28 while the big hitters Hayley Matthews (16) and Deandra Dottin (2) fell for low scores. After the match, Nigar said that she had the World Cup qualification in the back of her mind, but it was far more important to bounce back after the big defeat in the first ODI.”I think it was great to see how we bounced back in such a short turnaround time, especially after the nine-wicket defeat. We definitely wanted this momentum,” she said. “Of course, the two points are priceless but we really also want to achieve a series win by winning the next game. We haven’t won an overseas series before.”Nigar said that she took her time in building her half-century, but was pleased the runs came in a winning cause for her team.”I took a long time to settle down in the middle, [I] played out a lot of deliveries, but the runs turned out to be important,” she said. “I am really happy to contribute to the team’s cause. It was, however, a team performance. We gave an outstanding effort out there.”The team had belief. We didn’t score a lot of runs on this wicket where the bowlers have a tough life defending a low total. We just planned to bowl in the right areas, and wait for the batters to make mistakes.”

INEOS love him: £40m+ midfielder now Man Utd's dream target after Baleba

Manchester United have now identified a “phenomenal” midfielder as their new dream target, and they are hoping to get a deal wrapped up before the transfer deadline, according to a report.

Man Utd halt Baleba pursuit with Brighton demanding £100m+

Man United were willing to break the bank to sign Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, despite being quoted over £100m, but they have now halted their pursuit of the midfielder, given that the Seagulls are extremely reluctant to sanction a departure.

Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler has also asserted that he is “very, very confident” Baleba will remain a Brighton player beyond the September 1st deadline, and United have now been forced to move on to alternative targets.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that United are well-placed to win the race for Sporting CP’s Morten Hjulmand, despite rival interest from Juventus, but reports from elsewhere suggest INEOS are hesitant about spending £69m on the Danish midfielder.

The Red Devils are lining up a double swoop…

However, according to a report from Spain, the United board ‘highly value’ Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, suggesting they are big fans of the Englishman, who has now emerged as the new dream midfield target.

Wharton is viewed as an alternative to Baleba, and INEOS are clearly looking to get a deal wrapped up soon, having formulated plans to sign him before the transfer deadline, rather than waiting until the January transfer window or next summer.

There is a belief the 21-year-old would be an ideal fit for Ruben Amorim’s side, having sought a player capable of providing balance in midfield for quite some time, and the youngster could even be brought in as a replacement for Casemiro.

However, a deal will not be easy, given that Palace are in no hurry to sanction a departure, with the Eagles looking to receive at least £40m for the England international, who is one of their key players.

"Phenomenal" Wharton could be exciting Baleba alternative

The former Blackburn Rovers man is certainly held in very high regard by the Crystal Palace faithful, with Dan Cook of HLTCO singling him out for high praise during the 2024-25 campaign.

However, there are doubts over whether the Palace star would be a like-for-like alternative to Baleba, given that he excels at creating chances and advancing the ball up the pitch, while the Cameroonian flourishes defensively.

That said, Wharton is a different type of player to Baleba, he is Premier League proven, which aligns with the type of signing Man United are looking to make this summer, and the reported £40m asking price is very reasonable.

Rangers can forget Vardy by signing £7m CF who was the "best" in the SPFL

What will Russell Martin’s centre-forward options at Rangers look like by the time the transfer window closes?

It was Danilo who started and scored during Tuesday’s catastrophic Champions League first leg defeat against Club Brugge, with Hamza Igamane only deemed fit enough for a cameo off the bench, while Cyriel Dessers, who had been starting recently, missed out altogether.

However, both Igamane and Dessers continue to be strongly linked with moves away, as they have been all throughout the summer, with Rangers rejecting a bid for the former from Lille earlier this week, so they may still need to go into the market for a new centre-forward in the next week or so.

Thus, should the Light Blues target a star recently heralded as the best striker in the division?

Rangers' pursuit of Jamie Vardy

Rangers’ interest in Jamie Vardy has been well publicised all summer long, at one stage it appeared as though the move was likely to happen, but that is not the case anymore.

In fact, as of this week, the 38-year-old appears more likely to end up on the other side of Glasgow, with reports suggesting that the England international ‘would love’ to join Celtic, adding that he has ‘his heart set’ on a move to Parkhead, thereby reuniting with former manager Brendan Rodgers.

However, suggestions since then indicate that not just Celtic, but Rangers have also made an approach to sign the veteran striker.

Considering Vardy scored exactly 200 goals in 500 appearances for Leicester, bagging nine in the Premier League for one of the division’s worst sides last season, he would undoubtedly score plenty at Premiership level, especially should he end up at one of Glasgow’s big two.

Nevertheless, with Vardy’s proposed move to Ibrox now appearing unlikely, should Rangers turn their attention to an alternative target?

How Rangers can forget about Vardy

Earlier this summer, it was reported that Rangers were interested in signing Girona striker Bojan Miovski.

The North Macedonian international striker first came to supporters’ attention when he joined Aberdeen from MTK Budapest three summers ago, making a huge impact at Pittodrie.

In two seasons with the Dons, he scored 44 goals in 98 appearances, including netting four times in seven European outings, while also scoring three times against Celtic and on four occasions against Rangers.

The table below underlines his impact in the Premiership.

As the table documents, across his two seasons in the Premiership, Miovski’s statistics were consistently impressive, which is certainly a noteworthy feat for a striker not playing for an Old Firm team.

Then-teammate Nicky Devlin labelled him “the best player in the league in his position”, form that earned the North Macedonian a £7m move to Girona last summer, which remains the Reds’ record sale.

This move was in preparation for the Blanquivermells’ first-ever Champions League campaign, but the last 12 months have not gone to plan for the player of the club, with Girona only avoiding relegation from La Liga by a solitary point last season.

Miovski, for his part, scored just four goals last season, two of which came against fifth-tier Extremadura in the Copa del Rey, albeit he was given limited opportunities, starting just 12 La Liga matches.

He was in the lineup for Girona’s opener last Friday night, but was replaced on the cusp of half time by back-up goalkeeper Vladyslav Krapyvtsov, sacrificed after Paulo Gazzaniga’s calamitous red card.

Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski.

Thus, it would not be a stretch to suggest Girona would be open to selling Miovski this summer, so should Rangers make a move?

Well, Miovski has proven he can score goals at Premiership level, one of only three non-Old Firm players to reach 16+ top division goals in back-to-back campaigns in the SPFL-era, alongside Lawrence Shankland and Adam Rooney.

Should he move to Rangers, the 26-year-old would get even greater opportunities to score, both in terms of quality and quantity, so would be the closest thing the Gers could secure to a guarantee of goals.

He'd help Arteta forget Eze: Arsenal in new talks to sign £78m "superstar"

There are fewer than two weeks to go until the transfer window slams shut, and it would be fair to say that Arsenal have had an interesting summer so far.

On the one hand, Andrea Berta and Co have done incredibly well to make six first-team additions and bring in superstars like Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi.

Yet, on the other hand, fans are still crying out for the club to address the team’s issues with creativity and the lack of threat off the left.

Arsenal's Bukayo Saka,Arsenal's Cristhian Mosquera,Arsenal's Martin Zubimendi,Arsenal's Noni Madueke,Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri andArsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly line up

Moreover, it now looks like the Gunners won’t be getting their hands on the player who could have solved those problems for them: Eberechi Eze.

However, in better news, the club are now being linked with another sensational talent, someone who could help Mikel Arteta forget about the Palace star.

Arsenal target Eze alternative

While Arsenal have been linked with Eze in the past, the reports touting him for a return to the Emirates really picked up earlier this summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

In fact, some stories even claimed that he had his heart set on a move to the club, but in recent days and weeks, everything has changed, and now it looks increasingly likely he’ll be moving to Tottenham Hotspur.

However, while missing out on such an incredibly entertaining player is far from ideal, it now appears as if the Gunners are moving to bring in someone who could help Arteta and Co forget about him.

At least that is according to a recent report from Graeme Bailey, who has claimed that Arsenal are once again very interested in Rodrygo.

The journalist has revealed that the North Londoners held fresh talks with the player’s camp last weekend, and that while they need to make room in the squad, they are ready to push for him.

However, while other stories from this summer have claimed he would cost around £78m, Bailey states that the Gunners would ideally bring him in on loan this summer.

It could be a complicated transfer that eventually requires a considerable fee, but even then, Rodrygo would be more than worth it, and the perfect player to help Arteta and the fans forget about Eze.

Why signing Rodrygo would be the perfect way to forget about Eze

The most significant reason that signing Rodrygo will help Arsenal forget all about Eze this summer is simply his stature and achievements in the game.

Real Madrid'sRodrygoarrives at the stadium before the match

For example, while the Palace ace is a big name in England and played a pivotal role in the club’s FA Cup triumph last season, the Brazilian is undoubtedly the bigger name, not only because he’s been an important player for Real Madrid over the years, but because he has helped them to win all there is to win in the club.

Despite still being just 24 years old, the “world-class superstar,” as he was dubbed by former teammate and Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modrić, already has two La Liga titles, two Champions Leagues and a host of other trophies on his CV.

Moreover, he has been particularly effective on the biggest stage.

In 64 Champions League appearances, totalling 3883 minutes, the former Santos gem has scored 25 goals and provided 14 assists.

That comes out to a staggering average of a goal involvement every 1.64 games, or every 99.56 minutes, which is only made all the more impressive by the fact he had to play out of his preferred position off the left for much of his time in Spain.

Moreover, of those goals, eight have come in the knockout rounds, and another eight have been game-winning strikes, so he can be relied upon to turn up when it really matters.

In short, while the Eagles ace is a star of the Premier League, the Osasco-born dynamo is a worldwide superstar.

Therefore, his arrival at the Emirates would almost certainly go some way in helping the fans and Arteta forget that they didn’t land the Englishman.

How many games Russell Martin has left at Rangers after new Ibrox sack update

It’s been a woeful start to life at Glasgow Rangers for Russell Martin and his Ibrox tenure could be coming to an end sooner than first thought following the latest update on his future.

Martin: I've got "more support ever" at Rangers

Out of the Champions League and yet to win a game in the Scottish Premiership, it can’t get much worse for Martin at Rangers. The former Southampton manager was backed all throughout the summer transfer window by the 49ers, but has not been able to turn that investment into much-needed results.

Rangers boss Russell Martin squating on the touchline

The international break no doubt comes at a good time for all involved, but Martin is not worried about losing his job. The manager revealed that he has “more support than ever” by those in charge at Ibrox after a 0-0 draw against Celtic in the Old Firm derby.

Although he chose to remain positive, however, reports have suggested that any support for Martin could be coming to an end sooner rather than later in Scotland with a number of replacements already mooted.

How many games Martin has left at Rangers

According to Football Insider reporter Wayne Veysey, Rangers are preparing to sack Martin this month, and, therefore, he has just four games to potentially save his job.

The report claims that only a dramatic turnaround would prevent any quick decision, with a ‘growing expectation within the club that Martin will be gone by the end of September’.

The report comes just one day after Thelwell – Rangers’ sporting director – publicly hailed Martin as “one of the best” in a clear backing of the manager that he handpicked to join the club in the summer.

A lot can, of course, change in football at any given moment, but there’s no denying that Martin has given himself an uphill climb. His current record in the Scottish Premiership has been a particular disappointment, whilst a 9-1 thrashing accross two legs at the hands of Club Brugge in the Champions League hardly did wonders when it came to getting fans onside.

Aaqib Javed's post mortem: Lack of experience in the ranks hurt Pakistan

Injuries to Ayub and Fakhar also contributed to that lack of experience in the Champions Trophy

Andrew Fidel Fernando26-Feb-20251:54

Urooj Mumtaz: Pakistan have let themselves down again

If you’re trying to identify the reason for Pakistan crashing out of their home Champions Trophy, look no further than this one: personnel. Specifically, the inexperience of that personnel. This was the main thrust of white-ball head coach Aaqib Javed’s post-mortem.Pakistan have one more match to play, of course, against Bangladesh, who are also already out of contention for the semi-finals. That match in Rawalpindi on Thursday is also under serious threat from rain, and perhaps a sodden outfield, with this having been a wet week in the city.Aaqib spoke at length about the various permutations and combinations in selection that could have improved the team’s output this tournament. But, clearly still hurting from the loss to India on Sunday, he made the point that India’s XI had a far greater body of work on their resume than Pakistan’s.Related

Agha promises 'fearless and high-risk' brand of cricket as Pakistan captain

Pakistan won't take Bangladesh pacers lightly, Aaqib Javed says

Pakistan and Bangladesh look – or hope – to sign off on a positive note

“When Pakistan and India are playing, it’s not only cricket – it’s more than that. You need a lot of experience,” Aaqib said. “This Indian team was the most experienced – they have almost 1500 games together. And Pakistan is on the bottom, with less than 400 games together. If you look at players like Babar Azam, [he] is the only one who has played more than 100 games. Then there’s Mohammad Rizwan [88 ODIs] and then Shaheen Afridi [64 ODIs].”The rest of them have less than 30 matches. Tayyab Tahir has played like eight games. Imam-ul-Haq [73 ODIs] was coming back in the team. The main thing is, when nothing works, and when you are talking about more than a game, then the experience counts. There is no doubt.”Part of this lack of experience was also down to having lost Fakhar Zaman, one of their most aggressive batters and one of the stars of the 2017 Champions Trophy triumph, in the first game of the tournament. They were also without Saim Ayub, who had hit 235 runs and taken two wickets in Pakistan’s 3-0 ODI series in South Africa in December. Ayub had been ruled out of this tournament with an ankle injury.”Similarly, we had to bring in Khushdil Shah because Saim was unfit. The reason is that in one-day cricket, you cannot go with five bowlers. You have to make a combination of seven batsmen and four bowlers.1:31

Urooj Mumtaz: Rizwan chewed up too many dot deliveries

“When Saim was there, he used to bat at the top and he used to bowl five to seven overs. When he was not there – we saw that if you do a little research – even with the terrific performances that Khushdil Shah has given in one-and-a-half years of cricket, his wickets… there’s no comparison. It was not even a close case or anything. But our job in the selection committee was to give the best replacement option.”In the absence of these players, it was down to the big five: Babar, Rizwan, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah and Afridi to step up, Aaqib said. But match-winning performances from these players never came. The five of them have come under particular fire in Pakistan since the team’s exit.”A common person who doesn’t play and is not part of the team management wants reasons and the names of people because of whom this team is losing,” Aaqib said. “As far as Babar, Rizwan, Shaheen, Naseem and Haris are concerned, our plan was to make the best possible XI or XV. There is no doubt that Shaheen, Naseem and Haris are excellent bowlers. If you compare them with the bowling attack of any team, they are one of the best fast-bowling options.”And if you look at Babar – apart from him, what other options do you have? We always say that if the team loses, change the team. This is the most inexperienced team already.”
