Arsenal can get Gyokeres firing by signing "unstoppable" £100m PL "machine"

It’s been an interesting summer for Arsenal so far this year.

Off the pitch, things have gone about as well as fans could have expected, with Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Magalhães back from their injuries and Andrea Berta making several sensational signings.

For example, the additions of Noni Madueke, Christian Norgaard and Cristhian Mosquera have massively improved the depth of Mikel Arteta’s squad, while Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyokeres have the potential to be transformational in the starting lineup.

However, with two losses on the bounce, the action on the pitch has been less encouraging, and particularly against Villarreal, the team struggled to get the most out of the Swedish marksmen.

Fortunately, the club could help solve this problem by going back in for a Premier League star they’ve been linked with earlier in the window, someone who’d get Gyokeres firing right away.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Arsenal need to get the most out of Gyokeres

It’s not hard to understand why Arsenal decided to spend around £63.5m on Gyokeres this summer, as last season saw them score 17 goals fewer than Liverpool in the league, and the former Sporting CP star is a lean, mean goalscoring machine.

For example, in just 52 appearances for the Portuguese side last season, totalling 4248 minutes, the Stockholm-born “powerhouse,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, found the back of the net a staggering 54 times, and provided 13 assists to boot.

That means the 27-year-old superstar averaged 1.28 goal involvements every game, or one every 63.40 minutes, which is nothing short of miraculous.

Yet, while he certainly wasn’t bad against Villarreal yesterday evening, fans weren’t able to see him open his account, nor did he look particularly dangerous either.

However, we wouldn’t blame him for that, as he managed to keep the one shot he took on target, was successful in 100% of his dribbles, and wasn’t credited for missing any big chances.

Instead, the problem lay more with his teammates, as neither Ethan Nwaneri nor Martin Odegaard created a single big chance for him from the midfield, and only two were created from the rest of the squad.

In short, Arteta needs the rest of his team to create more chances for Gyokeres, and while that might happen during the season, the club could make it more of a sure thing by signing someone they’ve already been linked with this summer: Morgan Rogers.

How Rogers could get Gyokeres firing

Yes, while he might not be a player too heavily linked with Arsenal at this moment in time, Rogers was touted for a move to the Emirates several times earlier this summer.

While it would likely be a complicated transfer to get over the line, and a very expensive one at that – some reports have priced him at £100m – it would be one worth fighting for, not only for the Englishman’s own ability, but the impact he could have on Gyokeres as well.

The first and most crucial reason he’d be able to get the Swede firing is down to his impressive output.

For example, in 54 appearances last season, totalling 4496 minutes, the Halesowen-born “machine,” as dubbed by The Athletic’s Jacob, managed to score 14 goals and provided 15 assists for good measure.

That means the often “unstoppable” 23-year-old, as dubbed by former Liverpool defender turned pundit Jamie Carragher, maintained a goal involvement every 1.86 games, or every 155.03 minutes, which is a supremely impressive effort, only made more so by the fact he played against sides like Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Juventus in the Champions League.

Now, just imagine how devastatingly effective the former Sporting marksman could be next season, playing ahead of, or alongside, someone as dangerous as the Villa ace.

Moreover, FBref ranked the England international in the top 3% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Premier League last season for long pass completion and the top 7% for through balls, per 90.

These metrics are particularly important and suggest he would be an especially useful teammate for the former Coventry City star, as the goalscoring monster spends most of his time in and around the penalty area, and takes almost all of his shots there as well, meaning he needs his teammates to feed him the ball.

Ultimately, it would be an expensive and ambitious transfer to pull off, but due to his ability and the impact he could have on Gyokeres, Arsenal should do what they can to sign Rogers this summer.

West Ham agree deal to sign England forward with medical completed

Securing their fourth arrival of the window, West Ham United have reportedly agreed a deal to sign a bargain striker who has experience in the Champions League and at international level.

West Ham's striker problem

Whilst much is made of striker curses elsewhere around London, West Ham have quietly been having plenty of trouble in that department themselves. If it hasn’t been Jarrod Bowen or Michail Antonio stepping up in recent seasons, then it’s been difficult to pick out just where the Hammers’ threat could come from going forward.

West Ham submit "formal bid" to sign "phenomenal" Brazilian wanted by Everton

The Hammers are working on another reinforcement.

ByTom Cunningham Aug 2, 2025

They welcomed Niclas Fullkrug in the hope of solving that problem last summer, only for the former Borussia Dortmund man to join a long list of struggling forwards. Now without Antonio, who left as a free agent earlier this summer, the Hammers desperately need someone to step up or step in through the transfer window.

To that end, there may still be some hope for Fullkrug, who was in a positive mood after scoring in West Ham’s friendly victory against Everton recently. If the Hammers can get him firing on all cylinders, then Graham Potter will certainly stand a far better chance at turning things around after enduring a tough start to life at the London Stadium.

However, it won’t just be the 32-year-old tasked with finding the back of the net for West Ham next season. Alongside him looks set to be an experienced England international.

West Ham agree deal to sign Wilson

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, West Ham have now agreed a deal to sign Callum Wilson. The former Newcastle United forward became a free agent after leaving the Magpies earlier this summer, but is now set to get his next move after completing a medical with the Hammers.

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson

At 33 years old, there will naturally be some concerns that Wilson is not a long-term option, but if West Ham want a proven goalscorer then Wilson will certainly offer them that in the Premier League.

Praised for his “excellent” goalscoring record by Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, Wilson is just 12 goals away from joining the Premier League’s 100-club and could do so in West Ham colours. Putting pen to paper on a one-year deal to become West Ham’s fourth signing, the experienced forward will be out to leave one final mark on England’s top flight.

Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney told what Wrexham must change to avoid relegation scrap – with Red Dragons being taught tough Championship lessons

Wrexham, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney calling the shots, have been told what they must change in order to avoid a relegation scrap.

  • Adjusting to life in second tier of English football
  • Parkinson advised to tinker with tactical approach

The Red Dragons have enjoyed a meteoric rise, with the EFL history books being rewritten when celebrating three successive promotions. Hollywood co-owners have helped to lift the Welsh outfit into the second tier of English football.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Competing in the Championship was always going to be difficult, even with big spending taken into account, and Wrexham have picked up four points from as many games at the start of the 2025-26 campaign. They have been warned that they could be dragged into a basement battle if Phil Parkinson does not tinker with his tactical approach.

  • WHAT GOODMAN SAID

Former Football League star turned pundit Don Goodman told : “If you look at those first five games in all competitions, they conceded 12 goals, so I think the clean sheet away at Millwall will please Phil Parkinson. It's been a baptism of fire. They found it tough. It may surprise some people that they’ve found it difficult because I think some people got a little bit carried away with this rise through the leagues. But I'm really confident it hasn't surprised Phil Parkinson. He would have understood the big, big gulf for most League One teams between League One and the Championship, and that's why there's been so many new signings.

“They've signed Ben Sheaf, and that just tells me there is a recognition that they need to change the way they go about things. Because I think in the Championship, you tend to be in a relegation battle if you're in the low 40s in terms of possession. That's where Wrexham are at, there's only a couple of teams that have had less than them.

“I think only Derby County and Oxford United at this point have averaged less possession than Wrexham, and neither of those two teams have won a game of football yet. The trend is usually that clubs with super low possession, and high thirties or low forties is super low, usually end up in a relegation fight. That is pretty factual, I would say. So, currently I do think that the gap remains similar because Wrexham have got work to do.”

    DID YOU KNOW?

Goodman went on to say, with it being pointed out that Tom Brady’s Birmingham appear better suited to life in the Championship, as, after landing the League One title with 111 points last season, they like to see more of the ball: “Wrexham, on the other hand, you feel are going to have to adapt a little bit more. But when you look at them bringing in the likes of Conor Cody, Callum Doyle, Lewis O'Brien and Ben Sheaf, these are players with quality on the ball. I do think that Phil Parkinson will recognise that if he wants to win games and get points, they're going to have to control the ball. I'm not saying they need to have 55% of the ball, I'm saying there are pockets of games. where you're going to have control of things. I think the signings that they've made are maybe a slight recognition of that.”

Better deal than Rodrygo: Liverpool enter race to sign £38m Diaz replacement

Liverpool were at the foot of an unscalable mountain when Jurgen Klopp up and left at the end of the 2023/24 season, but Arne Slot has since proved himself a more than worthy successor.

He won the Premier League in his first term at the helm, after all. And the Dutchman did it, having been rewarded with minimal spending in the transfer market, Federico Chiesa the only first-team addition, and starting just once in the top flight all year.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

Now, though, Liverpool have built themselves up and are financially able to spend freely this summer, with the evidence lying with the acquisitions of recent months, including the British-record £116m signing of Florian Wirtz.

A move for Alexander Isak remains on the cards.

However, with Luis Diaz on the verge of finalising his move to Bayern Munich, a new left winger may be needed too.

Why Liverpool are selling Luis Diaz

Diaz has been one of the Premier League’s standout wingers over the past few years. His return of 25 goal contributions last year was a haul bettered only by that man, Mohamed Salah, as Liverpool steamrolled their way to the league title.

Luis Diaz

But the 28-year-old has also entered the penultimate year of his contract, and the relevant parties have been unable to find common ground when discussing the possibility of an extension.

The Colombian had also made it clear to the powers that be that he wanted to leave this summer. Such demands undoubtedly centred around financial desires, and justified ones at that, but the fact remains that Slot would not want an unhappy leading squad member to remain in the ranks.

Diaz is on the cusp of his big move, and though the thought of Real Madrid’s Rodrygo is exciting, the Brazilian having been routinely linked with the Reds of late, the finances involved would be too much, especially with a deal for Isak in the works.

Instead, FSG might be convinced to head down a shrewder track.

Liverpool enter race for Rodrygo alternative

As per Spanish reports, Liverpool have entered the race for RB Leipzig’s Antonio Nusa, though the report claims that Rodrygo very much remains on FSG’s shortlist.

Nusa, 20, is early into his professional career but has earned acclaim for his performances, with previous reports this summer detailing Newcastle United’s interest, claiming he would be available for a €45m (£38m) fee.

Given how much cheaper this would be than signing Rodrygo, who is believed to have been priced at an initial £78m by Los Blancos, this might be a rumour FSG want to chase.

Why Liverpool should sign Antonio Nusa

Cody Gakpo will reprise his role as Liverpool’s chief left-sided forward next year, having matched Diaz’s 25 goal involvements last year. Pundit Peter Crouch remarked that he’d “gone up a level” since Slot arrived.

The Netherlands international’s abiding place in Slot’s plans means that Nusa will be able to jump right into the thick of things without being overburdened by responsibility.

Last season, Nusa scored five goals and provided seven assists across 36 matches for Leipzig, only starting 23 of those fixtures across all competitions.

The Norway international joined Leipzig from Club Brugge in Belgium after previously holding talks with both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, with Nusa’s 23/24 campaign underscoring his potential as a “future icon”, as he was described by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Though his fleet athleticism lends itself to success across a range of positions, it’s clear through the data so far that Nusa’s most productive role comes off the left flank.

Nusa isn’t just a balanced striker in the final third, but an athletic phenomenon with a vicious blend of speed and balance when dribbling. In this way, he has the blueprint to make Liverpool forget all about Rodrygo, with Slot instead fashioning a new elite winger.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has even waxed lyrical about his compatriot’s qualities, saying this: “He’s exceptional. We need to be careful not to put too much pressure on him, even though he’s incredibly talented. His continued development is what matters most.”

Antonio Nusa for Norway.

Moreover, he’s a hard-working defensive player, giving back to his manager’s faith by fighting for success across the different phases of play. In the Bundesliga last year, Nusa averaged 1.2 tackles and won 4.1 duels per game, as per Sofascore.

FBref underline these points. The data-driven site have revealed he ranked among the top 14% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe last season for successful take-ons and the top 19% for tackles per 90.

After becoming the second-youngest goalscorer in Champions League history two years ago, you might even say he has the potential to emulate someone like Rodrygo and become a superstar on Europe’s elite stage. He’s a ‘future icon’, is he not?

Sure, Rodrygo hit 14 goals and 11 assists across all competitions last year, highlighting the fact that Nusa is not at his level yet. But the Norwegian remains a special talent with the ingredients for something spectacular.

Rodrygo is one of the world’s standout wide forwards, of that there is no doubt. But he left plenty to be desired last season, only scoring six league goals.

He’s an immense figure on the major stage, and playing at Liverpool would give him a new lease of life.

But for double the price that Nusa would cost? It doesn’t make sense, for the 20-year-old is destined for the top.

Rain washes out first day in Bengaluru

India lead the race to the World Test Championship final in 2025

New Zealand have now gone six consecutive days of Test cricket in India without any actual cricket. After the Afghanistan misadventure in Greater Noida, you could hardly blame the ground for this one, though. The first day of the first Test in Bengaluru remained a non-starter as the rainy week continued.Bengaluru did wake up to optimistic news as the expected apocalyptic rain had skirted the city. However, a drizzle of varying intensity – sometimes so fine that it wouldn’t result in an interruption if pay was already on – continued until a big shower at 2.30pm put paid to all hopes of a toss on day one. Now that this will start as a Test of four days or fewer, a team wanting to enforce a follow-on will need to lead by 150 and not 200.Related

After the amount of rain the M Chinnaswamy Stadium has taken in the lead-up to the Test, the only reason for hope was the sub-air drainage system at the ground that can drain a claimed 10000 litres of water per minute. However, there was another obstacle in the course: because of the rain a day before the match, the Hawk-Eye formatting couldn’t be done. This process, too, takes an hour and a half. However, it didn’t come down to that as the rain at 2.30pm was heavy. The authorities will hope this formatting can be done before the second day, which by the way is forecast to be impacted by rain again.Play will start 15 minutes early on the remaining four days and end 15 minutes late so that 98 overs can be bowled every day. An extra half an hour can be added to make up for slow over-rates.

No water, no roof – fans reel from the heat in Pune

The MCA has promised improved access to water for the fans from day two onwards

No access to drinking water for spectators at the MCA Stadium on a hot and humid day in Pune led to chaos and complaints of sickness among the fans who came to watch the first day of the second Test between India and New Zealand.During the lunch break, hundreds of spectators queued up near the North Stand for water, which was unavailable at the time. Police intervention was needed to manage that crowd. Around 20 people complained of dehydration and giddiness and needed attention at the first-aid kiosk at the North Stand. With temperatures over 30 degrees celsius, a member of the staff at that kiosk suggested that there were more cases of dehydration in other stands. The MCA stadium, located in the outskirts of Pune near the expressway to Mumbai, has a capacity of 37,000, and almost 18,000 spectators turned up for the third Test match at the venue and first since 2019. More than half of those spectators had to brave the heat and humidity as only six stands at the MCA stadium have a roof. The MCA had promised free water during this game, but amid the chaos, a number of fans ended up buying water from vendors at high prices. One fan said he had spent more on water bottles than his ticket for the entire Test match.Once water was made available to the spectators the MCA secretary Kamlesh Pisal apologised to the fans and said that more water booths would be set up across the stands from Friday.”We can only apologise to the fans for inconvenience caused,” Pisal told reporters. “But we want to assure them, through MCA, that this won’t be repeated, and everything will be taken care of.”Considering the scorching heat, we had decided to provide cold water. In our previous experience, the fans had complained about us providing warm water or boiling water. We, as management, thought we would provide them with cold water, so we had kept cool cages. Once the water in cool cages finished, we tried to refill it with the same cold water, and in that process, it got delayed. We have done a recce of the entire water in stands and will make sure everything is refilled properly tonight to avoid such situations.”

Man Utd make contact for Martinez as INEOS ramp up summer plans

As the transfer window hits the midway point of July, the Red Devils will be disappointed that they have just got one senior signing through the door. The next arrival at Old Trafford appears likely to be Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, despite the fact that the Premier League giants are struggling to agree a fee with the London side.

After that, United are still in the market to strengthen their midfield and forward line, and despite Andre Onana still being at the club, they could now be targeting a new goalkeeper. That is because, according to journalist Gaston Edul, United are in talks with Aston Villa over signing Emiliano Martinez.

Emiliano Martinez in action for Argentina.

The Red Devils are said to have advanced their interest in the Argentina goalkeeper but have yet to make a formal offer, with the Villans looking to get around £40 million for their shot-stopper, while United are hoping they can agree a deal in the region of £33 million.

Interest in Martinez comes as questions about the form and fitness of Onana have come into focus. The Cameroon international had a very turbulent 2024/25, and he could be missing at the start of the 2025/26 season after picking up a hamstring injury.

Man Utd join race for Wolves star Andre

As the Red Devils begin talks to sign Martinez, according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, relayed by TEAMtalk, Man United have registered their interest in signing Andre from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The report states that as well as United, arch-rivals Liverpool are also interested in signing the Brazilian and, like United, have approached Wolves to make their interest known. It goes on to add that even though Wolves only signed Andre last summer, they would be willing to sell should they receive a fee of £30 million.

The 24-year-old, who has been dubbed “outstanding” by former Wolves player Andy Thompson, joined the Midlands side for a fee of £21 million last summer, meaning the Premier League side would be making a small return should he leave for £30 million in this transfer window.

Andre, who has been capped 12 times by Brazil, played 33 times for Wolves in the Premier League last season, 31 of which he started. The midfielder operated at the base of Wolves’ midfield, and his potential arrival at Old Trafford would likely see him replace Casemiro, who looks set to stay at United but may not feature regularly.

Andre is under contract until 2029, so Wolves are under no pressure to sell the midfielder, which makes the reported asking price somewhat of a question mark.

Abhimanyu, Harshit Rana, Reddy picked for India's tour of Australia

India have named three uncapped players – opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, fast bowler Harshit Rana and allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy – in their squad of 18 for the five-Test tour of Australia starting on November 22.Fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who hasn’t regained full fitness since his ankle surgery earlier this year, was not included while wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav was also not available for selection because of a “chronic left groin issue” according to a BCCI release. Mukesh Kumar, Navdeep Saini and Khaleel Ahmed are part of the travelling reserves.Rohit Sharma leads the squad with Jasprit Bumrah as his vice-captain. But with Rohit set to miss one of the first two Tests for personal reasons, it’s likely that Abhimanyu, 29, will make his Test debut on the tour. He has been part of India’s Test squad previously – in Bangladesh in 2022 – and has been in superb form this domestic season, scoring two hundreds in the Duleep Trophy, another century in the Irani Trophy, and beginning the Ranji Trophy season with a ton for Bengal.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

India have picked three spin allrounders R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, who marked his return to the Test team after more than three years with a ten-wicket haul against New Zealand in Pune. Reddy, 21, is the only seam-bowling allrounder in the squad for Australia. He will have extra time to acclimatise considering he is part of the India A team that will be playing two four-day games in Mackay and Melbourne. Reddy made his T20I debut against Bangladesh earlier this month and was a reserve player in the Test squad for the home series against New Zealand; he is already in Australia. He is seen by India’s selectors as a promising allrounder who could improve with more experience and exposure.Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna and Rana are the other fast bowlers in the squad apart from Bumrah. Prasidh, who has played two Tests previously, has just started playing again after recovering from a serious back injury, while 22-year-old Rana has played only nine first-class matches. Rana, who represents Delhi, took two four-wicket hauls for India D in the Duleep Trophy in September and has 36 wickets at an average of 24.75 in first-class cricket. With Khaleel in the reserves and no Yash Dayal, India don’t have a left-arm quick in the main squad.India begin their tour with a warm-up match against India A in Perth from November 15 to 17, after which they play the first Test against Australia at he Perth Stadium from November 22 to 26. They then travel to Canberra for a tour match against the Prime Minister’s XI on November 30 and December 1, before heading to Adelaide for the second Test, a day-night fixture from December 6 to 10. The third Test in Brisbane is from December 14 to 18, followed by the traditional Boxing Day Test in Melbourne starting December 26 and the New Year’s Test in Sydney from January 3.India are the holders of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and have won their two previous tours of Australia by a 2-1 margin, in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

O jogo

O principal lance veio perto do intervalo. No cruzamento de Tinga, Galhardo furou e, mesmo caído, chutou para o gol. A bola pegou em Lucas Sasha e, antes de cruzar a linha, John salvou o Inter.

Na etapa final os gols finalmente saíram. O primeiro veio do Internacional.

O atacante tirou a marcação e bateu firme. Bem colocado, John segurou a igualdade.
