The summer of 2025 is shaping up to be another big one for the Red Devils, with it imperative that they get recruitment business right in another vital transfer window. Plenty of comings and goings are already being speculated on as Ruben Amorim looks to put his stamp on the squad inherited from Erik ten Hag.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Rooney believes that a serious rebuilding project needs to be overseen, with there a lot of deadwood ready to be cast adrift. United’s all-time leading goalscorer feels there are only a couple of players that deserve a long-term future.
WHAT WAYNE ROONEY SAID
Rooney – speaking on the podcast, brought to you by – has said when asked if there is any way for the current United squad to recover from a hugely disappointing 2024-25 campaign: “No, I don’t think so. They look lost. They look scared.
“Bruno [Fernandes] is the one who keeps producing, he annoys you at times but keeps producing. They need massive changes to the squad, I think 10-15 players need to leave the club. Obviously, they can’t do that, but there is a mentality there where no one is taking responsibility.”

He added on those that he would be looking to retain: “I’d keep Bruno and [Kobbie] Mainoo. There is a culture at the club where it’s too easy to lose games and the players come out and say, ‘Onto the next one,’ and all that rubbish. Just show some character and fight on the pitch.
“It’s bad watching, it hurts. Being from Liverpool but spending so many years at United, I want the team to do well, I’ve got my kids in the academy, and it hurts watching them.”

Gloucestershire confirmed on Wednesday that Naseem would miss their next four County Championship fixtures, but said he should be available for selection in their opening T20 Blast game against Middlesex on May 26. He will stay in Bristol for his rehabilitation.”Following discussions between the medical teams of both Gloucestershire and the Pakistan Cricket Board, it has been decided that a period of workload management is in Naseem’s best interest to allow him to get back to full fitness as quickly and safely as possible,” a statement said.Naseem had initially been signed for the first half of the Championship season and the Blast, though his availability may be limited if he is selected for Pakistan’s ODI series against West Indies in June.Gloucestershire have two other overseas players in their squad, Marcus Harris and Zafar Gohar, who will continue to play in the Championship during Naseem’s absence.
Whilst Brendan Rodgers’ side continue to push on, Premier League scouts have reportedly been keeping a close eye on one Celtic gem as part of a five-club chase for his signature.
Celtic transfer news
Sitting top of the Scottish Premiership once again, Celtic’s toughest tests often arrive in the form of Champions League clashes, and that was no different against Club Brugge. Following Cameron Carter-Vickers’ calamitous own goal, which will no doubt be shown for years to come, the responsibility fell the way of Daizen Maeda to equalise in superb fashion on the hour mark.
Escaping with a point, the Bhoys must now turn their attention back towards domestic action and perhaps even the January transfer window, given that we are now just over a month away from the winter window swinging open.
When that does arrive, Celtic’s first task may well be to keep hold of Nicolas Kuhn amid reported Premier League interest, before they look to do the same in the case of a future star.
According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Daniel Cummings is now at the centre of a five-club chase after Premier League scouts were sent to watch as he scored the winning goal against Club Brugge in the UEFA Youth League.

As things stand, the young goalscorer is out of contract in the summer and could leave the Scottish giants for a cross-border compensation of just €310,000 (£250,000). Attracting interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham, Ipswich Town, Sunderland and Burnley, Celtic face quite the battle to keep hold of the in-form Cummings, who is still just 18 years old and potentially ready for first-team minutes.
"Resilient" Cummings is not a player Celtic want to lose
With 22 goals in 20 games, it’s fair to say that Cummings is taring it up at youth level. If ever a player was on the brink of breaking into senior football, a case could be made that it’s the young Scotsman. Whether Celtic offer their young forward that chance remains to be seen, however, and with a number of clubs reportedly interested in his signature, Cummings may not wait around to find out.
Earning plenty of praise, the teenager was described as “skillful” and “resilient” by The Young Team, who scout Scotland’s next top talents. Amid such impressive form too, it’s difficult to argue with that description.
So, although some will be focused on the future of players such as Kuhn, Cummings is also one that Celtic should be desperate to keep hold of, given how he’s impressed in the current campaign.

Ryan Gravenberch out of Netherlands squad
Still suffering from his injury last week
Doubt placed on availability for Everton clash

WHAT HAPPENED?
Gravenberch has been in top form for Liverpool this season as the Reds have soared past their competition in the Premier League. However, while that wasn't the case in the Champions League and the FA Cup, the Dutchman's form cannot be disputed and he was expected to be a starter for the Netherlands national team in their Nations League quarter-final against Spain this week.

However, Netherlands have now confirmed that Gravenberch has been dropped from their squad for the international break as he is "still suffering from an injury sustained over the weekend" during Liverpool's dismal loss to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.

Gravenberch has started in all of Liverpool's Premier League clashes this season and has been a pivotal name for Arne Slot's side. However, depending on the Dutch midfielder's fitness, his streak could come to an end after the international break ends.
WHAT NEXT FOR GRAVENBERCH?
The Dutchman is now expected to travel back to England for further tests on his injury to determine his availability for Liverpool's Merseyside derby against Everton on Wednesday, April 2.
England quick limited to solitary over as Sussex take charge even without him
David Hopps12-May-2022Sussex 39 for 1 trail Leicestershire 210 (Crocombe 3-37, Beard 3-58) by 171 runsOllie Robinson’s prospects of bowling himself into contention for the opening Test against New Zealand took another backward step when what was officially described as a stomach upset restricted him to only one over against Leicestershire. What he consumed ahead of the game has not been divulged, but it is a fair bet that it was not an ECB-approved mix of piri-piri breaded tofu and cruciferous vegetables.Fast food led to slow Robinson as he summoned up a single desultory over before leaving the field. He made a couple more shortlived fielding appearances later in the day, but none were long enough to bowl again. Fortunately for Sussex, Leicestershire’s innings developed a similarly pallid complexion as they subsided to 210 all out in 83.4 overs.”What are we going to do about Ollie?” will be a question in the In Tray of Brendon McCullum as he takes up his role as England’s new Test coach. Sussex loyally claim that his fitness in county cricket has been exemplary, but the extra intensity of international cricket has caught him all too frequently short.Since his fitness was openly brought into question at the end of England’s Ashes series, he has missed all three Tests in the West Indies because of a back spasm in the warm-up match in Antigua, and been refused permission to play in Sussex’s Championship match against Worcestershire because his fitness levels were unsatisfactory – something he blamed on a tooth infection. Nobody said what tooth it was, but as he appears to be undermining his own career it was unlikely to be a wisdom tooth. In his solitary Championship match, against Middlesex at Hove last week, Robinson took seven wickets. He appears to be a bowler who gets fit by bowling, an old-fashioned concept, but in many ways he is an old-fashioned cricketer. A casual look suggested he did look in need of an over or two. To deny him cricket at Worcester because he was not fit enough might well be viewed as a hard lesson, but the approach could prove to be largely counterproductive. Where should dictates begin and end? McCullum may have a view.Leicestershire have reached 300 only once all season, and their only hundred in a season in which the other 17 counties have racked up 94 between them was a match-saving affair by Hassan Azad against Worcestershire. This offered an opportunity to Robinson for something eye-catching, even allowing for the fact that this is a match between the Second Division’s bottom two, and so even if he had taken a 10-for, the clips would have brought paroxysms of rage from Kevin Pietersen on social media with cries of: “Look at the batting!””Look at the batting!” would have been an appropriate response, come to think of it, for several of the dismissals as Leicestershire, 69 for 1 with lunch approaching, contrived to lose seven wickets for 75 in 26 overs. In Robinson’s absence, Aaron Beard, an Essex loanee, and Henry Crocombe bowled with commendable energy to take three wickets each.Robinson’s talent is abundant – a Test and first-class average of 21 testifies to that – but he must be fit enough as a third seamer to bowl more than 20 overs a day, especially as England have no recourse to a reliable holding spinner. With James Anderson and Stuart Broad approaching an age when some people are already considering a re-run of an old Midsomer Murders, they cannot be expected to pick up any slack. With George Garton absent again because of the effects of long Covid, Mohammad Rizwan withdrawing due to a family bereavement and Mason Crane recalled by Hampshire, Sussex were up against it. The captain, Tom Haines, was forced to employ his own medium pace, with the keeper standing up, within the first hour.Crocombe had Sam Evans caught at second slip, but Leicestershire were within an over of lunch, with Azad and Rishi Patel looking untroubled, when they contrived one of the slackest run-outs of the season. The cover region was entirely unmanned as Azad pushed the ball firmly enough to point, but Patel half-heartedly opted for a single, Azad, whose running between the wickets can be a bit of a liability, wasn’t sure at all, and Tom Alsop dashed from first slip to pick up and throw down the stumps at the bowler’s end with Azad well short.Considering that Leicestershire had suffered three first-innings run-outs against Glamorgan last week, Azad among them, the waste was criminal. Patel followed soon after lunch to a good, back-of-a-length ball from Beard, and another catch at second slip for Tom Clark.Henry Crocombe led the line in Robinson’s absence with three wickets•Getty ImagesLeicestershire have given away 4,000 free tickets for this match, many of them to schools, and judging by the squeals of delight that had met the team announcement at 10.40am, Patel was something of a favourite so his departure was a disappointment. In The Meet, the favoured haunt of more sedentary observers, team announcements have occasionally brought a momentary pause in the chewing of a sausage sandwich, but squeals have not been logged, and it was good to see the outfield swarming with children playing Kwik Cricket at the lunch interval.Leicestershire’s shot-making afterwards did not go so well. Colin Ackermann chopped a little inducker from Haines into his stumps and Lewis Hill’s run-a-ball 35 ended with an uncontrolled leaping cut at Crocombe and a decent, leaping catch by Archie Lenham at square third man.Harry Swindells was lbw on the back leg to Delray Rawlins, who also had the South African Wiaan Mulder caught down the leg-side. Ben Mike fell for nought, trying to force a Crocombe delivery off the back foot and edging to first slip. Callum Parkinson’s unbeaten 32 served as a suitable comment on the inadequacies of what had gone before and he reinforced that after the close.”A frustrating day because we’re repeating errors – we had the game by the scruff of the neck at 69-1, but then we have a soft run-out and a couple of soft dismissals and we’re on the back foot,” he said.”We’ve got to give ourselves a chance to get into games and you don’t often do that when you don’t score big first innings runs. It felt like a decent pitch to bat on. We just have to do the basics better.”Neither side will want to end the first phase of the Championship – this is the penultimate round of seven – without a win to their name. It was Sussex who closed the first day the more confident of achieving breaking their duck. And, in the second innings, who knows, a revitalised Robinson to come.
Rivals watch with slumped posture as Liverpool continue to move inexorably toward the Premier League title, or so it would seem.
The thing is, those of an Anfield persuasion know the agony of coming within a whisker of the biggest prizes over so many hard-fought years under Jurgen Klopp’s leadership.

Liverpool are flying high but they aren’t infallible. December has been a successful month but it has exposed some defensive fragilities that need to be managed.
Liverpool looking at left-backs
While Liverpool are unlikely to do anything drastic and sign a left-back this winter, it does appear to be a priority position and will be the first port of call when action is taken to improve Slot’s squad.
Recent reports claim that Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, 21, is on the radar but that Manchester United are in the driving seat. Liverpool may need to move for alternative targets if the need for a full-back intensifies.
Well, as per transfer insider Graeme Bailey, the Anfield side have been sounding out a potential move for Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
Bayern Munich'sAlphonsoDaviescelebrates scoring their fifth goal
It’s understood that FSG have been in talks with the Canada international’s representatives in recent weeks and have ascertained that he would be interested in moving to the Premier League.
However, Real Madrid are also in the picture, and though Slot’s side could snap him up on a free transfer, Davies’ £178k-per-week salary would likely need improving, placing him within the highest echelon of Liverpool’s earners.
What Alphonso Davies would bring to Liverpool
Andy Robertson has shrunk into a modus operandi that lacks his former vigour and energy. Noise concerning his decline is perhaps a little too loud, but as correspondent David Lynch says: “Robertson’s luck just hasn’t been in this season, but it would also be fair to say he has been at the scene of the crime for a lot of poor Liverpool moments.”
Liverpool's Andrew Robertson leaves the pitch after being shown a red card
The 30-year-old has clearly run himself into the ground across years of tireless service on Merseyside, and while he will want to continue his Liverpool journey over the next few years (at the least) bringing a player of Davies’ ilk in could be a game-changer, injecting potency while maintaining the creative and technical quality on offer.
Davies is a rampant dribbler, sure, but he is also a confident distributor and an accurate ball-winning defender. The complete package, some might say.

Davies’ former teammate Ivan Perisic has described him as a “miracle” in the past, such is the absurd nature of his physical qualities, his speed and potency.
He’d be the perfect Robertson upgrade, with his style seemingly perfect for the thriving Cody Gakpo too.
Imagine him & Cody Gakpo
Gakpo has grown into a key player this season, having notched ten goals and four assists across 26 appearances, of which only 15 have come from the outset.
Robertson is still a solid and accomplished left-back with an elite range of passing that creates a link between him and the attacking wideman, be that Gakpo or Luis Diaz, but Davies would reinvent the flank and instil a new level of dynamism across the years of his Liverpool career.
Bayern Munich'sAlphonsoDaviesin action with Bayer Leverkusen's Nordi Mukiele
As per FBref, Davies ranks among the top 3% of full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 9% for progressive passes and shot-creating actions, the top 2% for progressive carries and the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90.
Davies’ pace and relentless ball-carrying moves would be perfect for the Dutch winger, whose ability to cut inside and rifle swooping shots into the corner of the netting is proving to be a real asset for title-chasing Liverpool.
Gakpo’s beautiful goal against Leicester City on Boxing Day set the tone in the second half as Liverpool staged a comeback. Just imagine if this Arjen Robben-esque wideman had a tireless bundle of energy deployed behind him. The two could work in devastating flux.
Of course, one of the most pressing concerns on Liverpool fans’ minds will be whether Real Madrid can be defeated in this transfer battle. There’s a very plausible and not-too-distant future that sees Davies partner Trent Alexander-Arnold on the Los Blancos flanks.
But given that the Bayern star is willing to try his hand in the Premier League and Liverpool are performing at a level that would tempt any first-class player across the globe, this could be a statement signing for Richard Hughes to complete, speaking to the globe that Anfield is one of the finest and most attractive outfits around.
From a tactical standpoint, Slot will feel that he has the acumen to raise Davies’ skillset even higher. Paired with Gakpo on the left, it could be a recipe for destruction. Liverpool are Europe’s team to beat right now but such an acquisition could actually ensure a similar level is maintained across the Slot era.

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s fortunes have fluctuated wildly this season. After racking up five successive victories, they have lost four games on the bounce and two of their key players – T Natarajan and Washington Sundar – to injuries. Their injury-enforced absence has coincided with Sunrisers’ attack conceding 190-plus totals in each of their four losses. Sunrisers now need to win their remaining three league matches to be in with a chance to qualify; if they lose one then they will have to hope that at least one of Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore lose their remaining games.Sunrisers have rifled through their bowling options, but Fazalhaq Farooqi, Kartik Tyagi, J Suchith and Shreyas Gopal haven’t quite provided the control and bite that Natarajan and Washington brought. The good news for Sunrisers, though, is both Natarajan and Washington are likely to be fit for Saturday’s fixture, as they look to snap their losing streak and work their way back into contention for the playoffs. However, the bad news is the duo’s potential comeback doesn’t mask the troubles at the top. Captain Kane Williamson’s powerplay strike rate of 79.52 is the lowest among batters who have faced more than 50 balls during this phase in this season. His opening partner Abhishek Sharma’s form has also cooled off after a hot start.

Kolkata Knight Riders, too, have had to contend with top-order issues, but Venkatesh Iyer’s comeback and the presence of Ajinkya Rahane, one of the better players of the short ball, gives them hope. Venkatesh’s 24-ball 43 was central to Knight Riders posting their first fifty opening stand and highest powerplay total – 64 for 1 – this IPL, in their previous game against Mumbai Indians.Knight Riders also found a way to fit both Pat Cummins and Tim Southee into their XI against Mumbai, but they have now been forced to rejig their combination, with Cummins flying back home after suffering a hip injury. Varun Chakravarthy also contributed to Knight Riders’ victory against Mumbai and later, speaking to Star Sports, the host broadcaster, he said that the ball has been coming out of his hand better than it did in the early half of the season. Despite the positives, Knight Riders’ chances of qualifying are slim.
In the news
Cummins’ injury is understood to be a minor problem and he is expected to be fit in time for Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka next month. Knight Riders have not asked for a replacement for Cummins.
Brendon McCullum will step down from his role as Knight Riders head coach at the end of the ongoing season, and will take charge of England’s Test side.

Bishop: All the changes have ‘created instability’ in KKR ranks
Likely XIs
Kolkata Knight Riders: 1 Ajinkya Rahane, 2 Venkatesh Iyer, 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 4 Nitish Rana, 5 Rinku Singh, 6 Sam Billings (wk), 7 Andre Russell, 8 Umesh Yadav/Shivam Mavi, 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Varun ChakravarthySunrisers Hyderabad: 1 Kane Williamson (capt), 2 Abhishek Sharma, 3 Rahul Tripathi, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 6 Shashank Singh, 7 Washington Sundar/J Suchith, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Marco Jansen/Fazalhaq Farooqi/Romario Shepherd, 10 Umran Malik, 11 T Natarajan/Kartik Tyagi
Strategy punts
Rahul Tripathi is Sunrisers’ best bet to tackle Sunil Narine. He has taken the spinner for 67 runs off 45 balls at a strike rate of almost 149 without being dismissed in seven IPL innings. Although the sample size is much smaller, Tripathi also has a strong head-to-head record against Varun: 19 off six balls without being dismissed.
Farooqi, Marco Jansen and Sean Abbott are all bowlers who swing the new ball or float slower variations with the old one. Against Knight Riders, whose struggles against the short ball have been well-established, there is perhaps a case for Sunrisers to yank Romario Shepherd out of the bench and give him the license to try and bounce out the opposition along with Malik.
Stats that matter
Bhuvneshwar Kumar has dominated Rahane in the IPL, having got him six times in 15 innings while keeping him to 89 runs off 96 balls
Andre Russell has smashed Bhuvneshwar for 51 off 21 balls at a strike rate of nearly 243 while being dismissed just once in the IPL.
Williamson’s overall strike rate of 96.13 is the lowest among batters with a minimum of 100 runs this season. Rahane is just behind Williamson on this list with a strike rate of 100.96.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are plotting a transfer swoop for a £34 million “great” youngster in January, according to a recent report. The Midlands side have had to wait all weekend for their Premier League fixture, as they travel to London to face West Ham in a game that is crucial for the futures of both managers.

Wolves manager latest
The game against the Hammers looks to be crucial to the future of Gary O’Neil. The Wolves manager has come under severe pressure this season, as his side have struggled at the bottom of the Premier League.
A 4-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park last Wednesday cranked the pressure up on O’Neil, as Wolves supporters vented their frustrations. It has resulted in more talk emerging over potential candidates who could replace O’Neil at Molineux – it has recently emerged that Wolves are considering an approach for West Brom manager Carlos Corberan.
West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.
The Spaniard has been doing an impressive job at the Hawthorns and has now emerged on Wolves’ radar, which is somewhat of a surprise given the rivalry between the two clubs. Meanwhile, it has also been reported that Wolves are considering a move for Graham Potter, who has been out of work since 2023, as well as Rob Edwards and David Moyes.
Either way, pressure is firmly on in Monday night’s game, and a defeat could spell the end for O’Neil at Wolves. But despite the manager’s uncertainty, it isn’t stopping the Premier League side from getting their plans in order ahead of January, as a striker emerges on their radar.
Wolves plotting transfer swoop for Igor Jesus
According to UOL, relayed by Molineux News, Wolves are interested in signing Igor Jesus ahead of a potential move in January. The 23-year-old started his career at Coritiba and their under-20s, but in October 2020 he left them to join Shabab Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia.
Jesus, who was dubbed “great” after scoring on his Brazil debut by analyst Ben Mattinson, returned to Brazil to join Botafogo in July of this year, and he has been in impressive form since returning to his homeland.
This report states that Wolves are showing an interest in signing the Brazil international ahead of January, having scored 25 goals in total for club and country in 2024. It could potentially be a costly deal for Wolves, as it’s been previously reported that Botafogo value their striker between 35 and 40 euros, which is roughly £29-34 million.
Jesus may be unknown in English football, but the Brazilian likens himself to Real Madrid’s Rodrygo along with a few other Brazil internationals. He said back in October: “The national team has a very pacey attack when you look at players like Vinicius, Rodrygo, and [Gabriel] Martinelli. I think my game is quite similar to theirs. I like to try to attack the spaces, and I am mobile – I don’t just stay in the box.”
