Sancho is currently on a season-long loan at Stamford Bridge from United after his rather public showdown with former Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag last season, which saw the winger banned from the first-team. While the 24-year-old was told that he was welcome back into the squad by Ten Hag, Sancho preferred to leave United and departed for Enzo Maresca's side on deadline day on a loan deal with an obligation to buy.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sancho has been playing well at Chelsea under Maresca and is starting to show a return to the kind of form that he had demonstrated at Borussia Dortmund. The Englishman scored the Blues' first goal in their comeback against Tottenham Hotspur in a 4-3 win away from home on Sunday. He has now fired shots at his doubters in a veiled dig at his doubters from his time at United.

  • WHAT SANCHO SAID

Speaking to the Premier League media team, Sancho said: "From the very first day, [Chelsea] made me feel welcome. I know I have a lot of people to prove wrong, and I’m just working hard every day in training. When I get my opportunity, I try to show what I can do. Today, I am happy that I scored and helped secure three points for the team.

"Again, I’m just taking it game by game, and hopefully, I can continue this form. I have to say thank you to the whole Chelsea team and the staff for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to play."

    WHAT NEXT FOR SANCHO?

The winger has had a few issues at Chelsea as well but those have not seemed to affect his working relationship with Maresca. He is unlikely to start or even travel when Chelsea travel 3,500 miles to take on Kazakhstan-based side Astana on Thursday.

Australia lean towards return of batting coach for Ashes and beyond

A review of the India Test series has unpacked how Australia’s dysfunctional batting might have been mitigated by the addition of a specialist mentor

Daniel Brettig12-May-2021Australia’s uncertain top six are likely to be bolstered by a full-time batting coach or specialist consultants for the Ashes and beyond, after a review of the series defeat to India investigated whether the home side’s chances of victory against India last summer may have been helped by the presence of an additional skills coach. In a conclusion that will not surprise those who watched the series closely but will doubtless draw a rueful smile from Graeme Hick, a review of the India Test series helmed by the head of national teams Ben Oliver has unpacked how Australia’s dysfunctional batting might have been mitigated by the addition of a specialist mentor. The role of batting coach, held by Justin Langer from 2009 to 2012, Michael Di Venuto from 2013 to 2016 and Hick from 2016 to last year, was made redundant as part of Covid-19 related spending cuts by Cricket Australia in the middle of 2020. At the time, Langer described the decision on Hick as “nothing he’s done, it’s more the impact of the cost cutting that we’re doing”.Related

Graeme Hick among 40 job losses amid CA restructuring

CA thus entered the India series with a mixture of regular team support staff and others requisitioned from different parts of the system, whether that was the Australian women’s team coach Matthew Mott or Queensland’s coach Wade Seccombe. In spite of many injuries suffered by the touring team after the early exit of their captain Virat Kohli, the Australian playing and coaching mix was not sufficiently well rounded to win the series, thereby forfeiting a place in the World Test Championship final next month. One of the key challenges for the batting group entering into the India series was the switch from limited-overs games to Test matches without much in the way of Sheffield Shield fixtures in between. A similar hurdle is likely to be set down by the campaign for the T20 World Cup later this year, which will end a matter of weeks before the home Test schedule.A flow-on effect of that struggle was the fact that Australia’s two outstanding batters, Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith, did not really show their best sides until after the first two Tests in Adelaide and Melbourne. With David Warner injured and still short of full fitness when he finally played at the SCG, a host of other players such as Joe Burns, Marcus Harris, Travis Head and Matthew Wade failed to make an impact; the Indian players occupied four of the top six spots on the series aggregates. While their shortcomings have been publicly underlined by the fact that the national selectors named just three specialist Test bats in their annual contract list – Smith, Labuschagne and Warner plus the allrounder Cameron Green – the pivot back towards a specialist batting coach position is a telling admission that the series result was not entirely down to the players alone. As a batting coach, Langer has tended to focus mainly on footwork and mental skills, but has found the many responsibilities of the head coaching role make it harder to focus on the one area. Langer has made no secret that he would like to see the likes of Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh around him, as they were on a “no expense spared” World Cup and Ashes campaign in England in 2019.Other possible names in the mix would include the state coaches Chris Rogers, Adam Voges and Jeff Vaughan – instrumental in working on the batting of the Test captain Tim Paine – while Di Venuto is back in Australia as part of the Tasmanian setup. Ponting and Michael Hussey, among others, will be present on the summer circuit as commentators.Whatever final form it takes, the role is unlikely to be filled in time for the scheduled July tour of the West Indies and Bangladesh, with the focus to be primarily on Test matches.

Craig Overton stars with bat and ball to put Somerset in total control at Hampshire

A Craig Overton-inspired Somerset assumed full control against Hampshire as the visitors dominated the second day at the Ageas Bowl.Overton – the leading wicket-taker in the LV=County Championship – demonstrated his batting credentials by top-scoring with 74, then starred with the ball as his side opened up a 165-run lead, Hampshire closing on 92 for 3 in their second innings.Overton struck 10 fours on the way to his 13th first-class fifty, before he removed opener Ian Holland, Tom Alsop and nightwatchman Kyle Abbott during a hostile spell of bowling late in the final session.Alsop and Weatherley had dug in admirably in a 56-run stand before Alsop fell for 32 five overs from the close when he lobbed an easy catch to Josh Davey.Overton struck again in the penultimate over of the evening when he trapped Abbot lbw for a duck for his 30th wicket of the campaign.Weatherley was unbeaten on 31 alongside new batter Sam Northeast, with the pair to resume their innings at some stage on Saturday with heavy rain forecast in Southampton.Somerset started the day on 142 for 5 and added another 47 before skipper Tom Abell’s stubborn innings was ended on 62 by a ball that nipped back into the top of his off-stump from Abbott.Nightwatchman Jack Leach, dropped when on three in the final over of the first day, made the hosts pay for that mistake with an entertaining 34. But the England spinner perished after trying to lift Keith Barker over the slips cordon only to find the hands of Liam Dawson.Somerset’s deep batting line-up then proved its worth as 143 runs were put on for the last three wickets, spearheaded by Overton. He was ably supported by Steve Davies and Lewis Gregory, who each scored 33, as Somerset, who sit in second spot in Group Two, one place above Hampshire, built up a handsome 257-run lead after recovering from 36 for 3 to be 336 all out.Left-arm veteran Barker was the pick of the home bowlers finishing with 4 for 67 alongside South African quick Abbott who took three wickets.

Talks on: Man Utd discuss personal terms with "special" £47k-p/w defender

Manchester United are once again stepping up their transfer plans ahead of the upcoming Premier League season and have reportedly begun discussing personal terms with one of their targets.

Man Utd facing left-back dilemma

Erik ten Hag's side are facing something of a dilemma at fullback heading into the new campaign. First choice Luke Shaw missed much of last season through injury, forcing the Manchester United boss to opt for makeshift options in the role, a position that Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof and even Sofyan Amrabat were asked to fill at various points.

Meanwhile, second choice option Tyrell Malacia missed the entire campaign with an injury of his own, leading to speculation that a left-back might be signed this summer.

But Shaw's return quietened those rumours, and the latest comments from Ten Hag appear to suggest that Malacia could be back in the coming weeks too.

"Tyrell is now in a good place," Ten Hag told Man Utd.com. "But he is not here because I only took players who could play games or be available for team training.

"He is not that far [off], but he is now in a progress situation. At a relatively short notice, he can again return into team training and then into team performance in games. I think it would be possible [to be available again] in two months."

However, with both players injury prone, the club could do with someone versatile and able to fill in at full back and across the pitch when required. Now, they seem to have found that player.

Manchester United chase "special" talent

That comes amid reports that the Red Devils are eyeing up a potential move for Fenerbahce defender Ferdi Kadioglu. The Turkish defender has been linked with Brighton and Southampton this summer as he heads into the final two years of his £47,000 a week deal in Turkey, and Manchester United are the latest to join the hunt.

That is according to Turkish reporter Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, who took to X to reveal that talks have been held between the Red Devils and Kadioglu's camp over a potential move to Old Trafford.

"Manchester United met with Ferdi Kadıoğlu's representative and asked about the contract terms he would demand from them in case of an agreement with Fenerbahce."

Former teammate Ole Romeny, who played with him at NEC Nijmegen, described him as a "special" talent: "The absolute top. He is also special as a left-back, there is no one with those footballing qualities."

Though listed as a left-sided player, Kadioglu is one of the most versatile players in Europe, having played across midfield and in both fullback positions so far in his career.

That versatility could prove a massive bonus at Manchester United, with the Red Devils still looking light in the centre of the pitch as well as at left-back, meaning that Kadioglu could see plenty of action were he to make the move.

It is thought that his current side are holding out for around £30m to part ways with the defender, with a host of clubs pushing for a move, which may well mean Ten Hag and co. will have to speed up negotiations should they truly want to land the 24-year-old.

Star-studded Dhaka Premier League gets underway inside BCB's biggest bio-bubble

The BCB has undertaken its biggest bio-bubble to date to host the Dhaka Premier League, which commences on May 31. The 2019-20 season was called off after just one round of matches last year, and the one-day tournament will now be a T20 competition due to the Covid-19 pandemic.Bangladesh, however, continues to be under a lockdown even though most daily life activity is being allowed. While the daily Covid-19 cases dipped last week, it has still not gone below the 1,000-mark.It is in this backdrop that the six DPL matches will be played on each match day at the Shere Bangla National Stadium and the two BKSP grounds. The BCB have already released the fixture for the first 30 matches to be held by June 6. The top six teams will feature in the Super League while the bottom three will fight for survival in the relegation playoffs, like every season. While the format is shortened to complete the pending tournament, the BCB have reportedly spent more than Taka 7 crore (USD 825,230 approx.) to get all twelve teams and match officials inside the bubble. They have already checked into four different five-star hotels in Dhaka, with regular testing and temperature checks part of their wide-ranging safety measures.Kazi Inam Ahmed, the BCB director who heads the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis, the body that organises the Dhaka leagues, said that they felt it was better to create the bigger bio-bubble rather than leaving it to the individual clubs.”It is actually a pretty big bio-bubble,” Ahmed told ESPNcricinfo. “We have done two tournaments with three and five teams previously, so this is our biggest challenge. BCB have taken many initiatives. More than fifty per cent of the players have been vaccinated even if they are under the age of 40. Leagues and tournaments are being held around in the world in other sport too.”In the English Premier League, players are coming to matches from home. If there’s a positive case, that player is isolated, while we have also seen that some matches got postponed due to the cases. We felt that the best way to address it would be to actually create a bio-bubble. We felt that the top hotels are the best places to do it.”Ahmed said that the BCB has already conducted two RT-PCR tests ahead of the hotel check-ins, and they have BCB-appointed monitors in each hotel to ensure there are no breaches.”We have asked the teams to test the players on their own. It helps create awareness. We have already done two days of testing before the players get into the bio-bubble, on May 26 and 28.”Every single hotel has an observer and a BCB-appointed doctor. There is going to be random temperature checks. We urge anyone who has even the slightest symptom, to come forward as soon as possible. It might not be (Covid-19), but we want to address it quickly,” he said.Ahmed said that the BCB have taken lessons from their own experience managing bio-bubbles in Bangladesh, having also experienced it in New Zealand and Sri Lanka earlier this year.”We have had two successful domestic tournaments as well as the NCL which couldn’t continue (due to nationwide lockdown).”We have hosted West Indies and Sri Lanka, and we have also toured two countries, so we have seen how others are doing it. So this is the best bio-bubble we could do at this point. But is anything foolproof?” he said.‘DPL will be great preparation for the T20 World Cup’The DPL is being scheduled in a way that most of Bangladesh’s top cricketers can take part during the break after the ODIs against Sri Lanka, and before their departure to Zimbabwe on June 29. While Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah have regularly taken part in the league, Shakib Al Hasan will be playing the DPL for the first time since 2016, this time having forgone his PSL contract.”I am excited that all the national players are playing including Shakib, Tamim, Mushfiq and Riyad. Sometimes we have not had them, and we might not have them in the future given their busy calendar.”I think this will be great preparation for the T20s ahead against Australia, New Zealand and England at home, and the World Cup T20 coming up.”Ahmed has already crossed the considerable hurdle of convincing both the board and the clubs to participate in the DPL, to ensure the largest chunk of professional cricketers in the country don’t go another year without their regular income.”We are trying our best to create a safe environment in this time. I also want to thank all the players and clubs for coming forward to make this tournament happen. It is a very short schedule,” he said.

Wolves now want to sign "outstanding" new £12m Kilman replacement

After losing Max Kilman earlier this summer, Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly want to replace their defender by signing a Champions League centre-back this month.

Wolves transfer news

The Midlands club were on course for a fairly successful summer, before Chelsea emerged to land Pedro Neto's signature. The winger's exit leaves quite the attacking void to fill, and one that Wolves must look to fix before deadline day at the end of the month.

On that front, as Fabrizio Romano reports, Wolves are eyeing a move to sign Carlos Forbs from Ajax. The former Manchester City academy ace would have some shoes to fill, but plenty of time to hit his potential at just 20 years old.

Wolves plot move to sign "exceptional" £120k-p/w ace with swap deal mooted

He could be an excellent addition at Molineux.

ByBen Browning Aug 10, 2024

However, before replacing Neto, those in the Midlands must first replace Kilman by signing a Champions League defender. According to GiveMeSport, Wolves now want to sign Oumar Solet from RB Salzburg this month in a deal worth a reported £12m. Given the hefty fee that they have received for Neto, it's safe to assume that Salzburg's valuation is well within Wolves' current range.

Red Bull Salzburg centre-back Oumar Solet.

24-year-old Solet has just one year remaining on his current contract in Austria, hence the lower valuation, and may now find himself on his way to the Premier League. For a bargain price, it would be impressive business if the Frenchman managed to replicate Kilman's quality.

"Outstanding" Solet could turn into bargain buy

Solet certainly has his admirers around European football, with U23 scout Antonio Mango describing the defender's form for Salzburg as "outstanding" last summer. The numbers that the scout presents highlight a player who may eventually become worth far more than £12m in something of a Kilman repeat for Wolves and O'Neil.

What's more, Solet can also play in defensive midfield to potentially hand Gary O'Neil two options in one player. However, if Wolves want to seal a deal for the former Lyon centre-back, they will need to act quickly, given that the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

With both Kilman and Neto to replace, it should be a busy couple of weeks in the Midlands. For O'Neil's sake, Wolves should hope to solve both their problems ahead of their Premier League campaign kick-off against Arsenal next weekend. Far from an easy start, Wolves will have to cause an upset in pursuit of three points on the opening day.

Fee agreed: Wolves bid accepted to sign attacking gem; personal terms done

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly agreed a deal to sign a left-footed attacking gem for Gary O’Neil, following on from their £10m agreement for Crystal Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Wolves signings so far

The Old Gold have made three permanent signings so far this summer, with Rodrigo Gomes, Pedro Lima and Tommy Doyle signing from SC Braga, Sport Recife and Manchester City respectively. Jorgen Strand Larsen also arrived on loan from Celta Vigo and scored his first Premier League goal for Wolves in the club’s heavy 6-2 defeat to Chelsea.

In regards to exits, Wolves have once again cashed in on a number of stars, with centre-back Max Kilman joining West Ham in a £40m deal and winger Pedro Neto signing for Chelsea for around £54m.

Speaking after the loss at Molineux on Sunday, O’Neil addressed the club’s transfer plans, saying: "Everyone knows the financial restrictions we have and have been there since I arrived. We have raised good funds in this window and the squad will need help.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

"Once the window shuts it doesn't open for a good few months, when it shuts we need to be comfortable with where we are. There's a lot of work for myself, I need to get more out of the group we have. Then there's an understanding the Premier League is tough and if you sell good players it makes you weaker.

"We'll see if it's a breakeven window by the time it shuts next Friday. We have raised some good funds and hopefully we can use them well in the next few days."

Better than O'Shea: Wolves looking at late move for "dominant" defender

He is rumoured to have a release clause in his contract

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 28, 2024

A transfer breakthrough has now been made for Wolves though, with an agreement reached on Wednesday for Johnstone, but they also look to be closing in on one who may not bolster O’Neil’s first-team squad straight away.

Wolves agree deal to sign Ethan Sutherland

According to Football Insider on Wednesday, Wolves have agreed a permanent deal to sign 18-year-old winger Ethan Sutherland from St Mirren. The report claims that the youngster is heading south for a medical, with personal terms also agreed over a transfer. Since then, Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph has added that a fee will be in the region of £300,000.

Sutherland is a left-footed winger who has progressed through the St Mirren youth system since 2022 after leaving Rangers. He spent the second half of last season on loan with League One side Alloa Athletic, scoring two goals and registering six assists.

You'd expect Sutherland could start out in the Molineux academy after signing, but he’ll be looking to progress into Wolves’ first-team setup in years to come. Hopefully, Wolves will follow this deal up with a few more senior signings before the deadline to keep O'Neil happy over the coming months and heading into 2025, possibly looking to replace Neto and Kilman.
