Mark Boucher praises 'bravery' as second-string squad falls short in Pakistan T20Is

There was an air of apology to the naming of South Africa’s T20I squad last month, with head coach Mark Boucher almost forced to justify the inexperience of the men named. He explained that the visitors were prioritising the upcoming visit of Australia to their shores, and were keen to provide their senior players as much rest as possible following the two-match Test series in Pakistan.Double jeopardy would soon strike the luckless visitors though, with Australia calling off the South African tour altogether, meaning South Africa were stuck with a T20I side very different to the one they’d likely have named had that information been known a few weeks earlier. Aside from David Miller, no one in the squad had played over 30 T20Is, and only Tabraiz Shamsi, Reeza Hendricks and Andile Phelukwayo had lined up in more than 20. The captain, Heinrich Klaasen, had been a part of just 13.At that time, South Africa might have been quite content to have known they’d partake in a T20I series that went to the final few overs of the deciding contest, indeed one in which they had serious opportunities to wrap up all three games. It was a point head coach Mark Boucher made just after the third game ended, with Pakistan having edged out the visitors 2-1.”I think you can pretty much analyse any moment in T20 cricket but, in the first T20, overs 6-10 when we were batting, we only got 15 runs,” Boucher told a video press conference. “That was a big issue and we probably did lose the game there. So yes, we probably could have done better there. The second game went to plan and losing three or four wickets so quickly did mean we were chasing the game. The key moments really cost us here, and for me, as a coach, we have spoken about that and we’ll continue to try and get through to guys so they don’t make the same mistakes again. If they can do that, then I think we’ll be going in the right direction, and the series shows where we’re headed with this T20 side.”The guys showed a bit of bravery with the way they played, though I wish we had been a bit smarter in the way we played the game at certain stages. What I’ve seen is encouraging. Even though we ran ourselves into a bit of trouble, we put up a good total. Maybe 15, 20 runs shy, but we were still in the game till the last couple of overs. A lot of positives, some youngsters coming through and Shamsi bowled really well throughout the series. Reeza [Hendricks] played nicely, and David [Miller]’s knock towards the end was great; good to see him back in the runs. The bowling I thought we did really well, there were times with the bat when we perhaps didn’t do that well but enough encouragement overall.”For Boucher, the biggest positive appears to be the opportunities the bench have been given, and the manner they accounted for them. There were calls when Australia pulled out of the tour to retain senior players for the T20I series, but South Africa stuck to their original plans, determined to give players with less experience a chance at the highest level. He pointed out that few outside the camp had given his charges a chance, but was hopeful this group of players would continue to breathe down the necks of the first-choice squad.David Miller revived South Africa in the decider with an outstanding counterattack•AP Photo

“I think the media were writing these guys off a bit, but we’ve got a T20 competition back home and I hope some of these guys stand up and put some pressure on the squad. The nice thing for me is that throughout the next couple of years we’ve got a good group of players together and we’re getting where we’d like to be. For Covid reasons we’ve had quite a large group of players travelling. They are learning some tough lessons, but you’ve got to be winning and unfortunately we didn’t. That doesn’t mean I’m not happy with their efforts though.”Boucher also praised Pakistan as “a fantastic place to play cricket”. This is the first tour South Africa have undertaken a tour of the country since 2007, with the head coach part of the playing squad at the time. With the pitches in Lahore worlds removed from what his side might generally be used to in the Highveld or the Western Cape, Boucher singled out his bowlers for special praise.”I think what we can learn is this is a fantastic place to play cricket. You see the history around the grounds and some of the fantastic talents that have come out of Pakistan. The spin isn’t as bad as it is in India and Sri Lanka, there’s not as much turn, but there’s a special technique that you still have to apply, especially when you’re batting. I’m really proud of the way the guys bowled; the bowling was a standout for me. I think the guys have done well in this particular situation and it can only help them going back to South Africa.”The tough part of being here was losing a series. We don’t go anywhere to lose series so I think that’s tough. The way we played a couple of the big moments was kind of disappointing. We got ourselves into the game and found stupid ways to get ourselves out of the game again.Related

“But I think we played some good cricket throughout the series. We had a very good meeting after the first game that we lost; we got ourselves into strong positions in that game. The second game showed the brand of cricket that we want to play where we showed intent, especially in the batting. We needed to show the right intent especially when we play against spin. We needed to be more proactive rather than react to it, and I think the guys really showed that today.”Boucher and his men might not have to request extra baggage for the rather voluminous trophy they just ended up missing out on, but there certainly need be no apology for the cricket the visitors offered out in Lahore. With Pakistan set to visit South Africa for a limited-overs series in just a few weeks, the departing South Africans may feel confident they’ll end up having the last laugh.

No reason Steven Smith shouldn't captain Australia – Usman Khawaja

‘He’s our number one batsman, he’s done it before, he’s paid for his mistakes’

Reuters and ESPNcricinfo staff06-Mar-2021Usman Khawaja has called for Steven Smith to be given the captaincy of Australia’s Test side once Tim Paine’s tenure is over if he covets the role.Smith, who led the team for nearly three years, was stripped of the captaincy and banned from leadership roles for two years in the wake of the Newlands ball-tampering scandal in 2018.Smith’s leadership ban expired last March but he has since been overlooked for roles in the Test and white-ball teams.”If Steve Smith wants to captain Australia, I think he should captain Australia,” Queensland captain Khawaja told reporters in Brisbane on Friday.”He’s our number one batsman, he’s done it before, he’s paid for his mistakes, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be in line for the captaincy if wants to do it.”Paine succeeded Smith as captain and led Australia to their Ashes triumph in England in 2019 and briefly the top of the Test rankingsBut his leadership was criticised at times during the series against India and Australia’s 2-1 loss on home soil against the injury-ravaged tourists turned the spotlight on him although national selector Trevor Hohns said his position was “never in question.”Fast bowler Pat Cummins is vice-captain of the Test team and Marnus Labuschagne is regarded by some as a candidate for the captaincy despite no experience at professional level. Cummins has recently been made captain of the New South Wales one-day side.Smith, who won a third Allan Border Medal as the country’s top male cricketer, said last month the captaincy was “not on [his] radar” and the decision was out of his hands.Various people have talked of a “process” that needs to be gone through before Smith can be considered for the role again.Paine recently said he was sure Smith would like another crack at the job. “There’s no doubt he would like to do it, I think, but we’ll just wait and see what happens in the next six to 12 months,” he told SEN radio. “One of the things we’re trying to do is develop more leaders in our team and Steve Smith is certainly one of those.”Unless England win the final Test against India to level the series, which would allow Australia to sneak into the World Test Championship final, they will not play Test cricket again until the end of the year following the postponement of the South Africa tour.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Ten Hag saw his tenure end after a narrow 2-1 defeat to West Ham United, a match overshadowed by controversy. The game's decisive moment arrived in the form of a penalty call, awarded to the Hammers after a clash between De Ligt and forward Danny Ings. Initially, match referee David Coote declined to give a penalty, but following a review prompted by VAR official Michael Oliver, a spot-kick was awarded. Ings converted from 12 yards to secure the three points for West Ham, while delivering a final blow to Ten Hag's embattled time at Old Trafford. Notably, Howard Webb, the chief refereeing officer for PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), later expressed that the penalty decision was an error on the part of Oliver as the contact between De Ligt and Ings was insufficient to warrant a penalty.

    WHAT DE LIGT SAID

De Ligt, visibly disappointed, defended his actions on the field, emphasising that he believed he had done nothing wrong in the fateful play. In a statement quoted by the Dutch publication De Ligt expressed his frustration: "Normally I am always self-critical and I can get annoyed about things that I do not do well. But here I could not do anything about it, I could not blame myself for it. The referee committee also called us to say that it was not a penalty.”

Reflecting on Ten Hag’s departure, De Ligt expressed sadness that their plans for success together at United had to end prematurely.

"He brought me to Manchester, the goal was to achieve success together with Erik," he added. "He has not been very lucky. We played well in many matches, but we did not use the chances we got. It is a shame that it has to end like this. A dismissal can always be quite hard. We discussed some things.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

As United moves forward under new leadership, the focus now shifts to Ruben Amorim, recently appointed to lead the Red Devils. The Portuguese manager arrives from Sporting Lisbon with a reputation for tactical acumen and a knack for developing young talent, qualities the United hierarchy hopes will bring stability and success.

“He did well at Sporting, hopefully, he can also take us to the next level," De Ligt said. "Amorim is not my first coach and he will not be my last coach. I did not only move to Manchester United for Ten Hag. It is still one of the biggest clubs in the world, I think. I just have to do my own thing and play well myself. I feel really fit now and things are going well. Hopefully I can continue that.”

Forget Broja: Everton pursuing "outrageous" star who’s just like Gordon

Everton’s hunt for a new striker has been ongoing for many weeks, but to no avail, with Sean Dyche yet to agree terms with a centre-forward to complete his transfer window.

A whole host of options have been touted with a move to Goodison Park this summer, despite already having three options in the form of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Youssef Chermiti on the books.

Chelsea striker Armando Broja has been the main man linked with a move to Merseyside most, with the Albanian forward free to leave Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Armando Broja celebrating a goal for Chelsea.

However, any deal for the 22-year-old would cost the Toffees around the £25-£30m mark – a huge sum for a player who could only manage one Premier League goal in the entirety of last season.

As a result, Dyche’s side could move for one talent who could be available for a cut-price fee after being relegated with his current side during the 2023/24 campaign.

Everton considering move for new attacking talent

According to TEAMtalk, Everton are monitoring the situation of Almeria forward Largie Ramazani ahead of a potential move to the club this summer.

UD Almeria forward Largie Ramazani.

The 23-year-old registered eight goal contributions in his 29 LaLiga appearances, but it wasn’t enough to help the Spanish side avoid the drop zone and escape relegation.

Belgian forward Ramazani, who is a product of the Manchester United academy, can feature in various positions across the frontline including on either flank, providing excellent versatility for Dyche.

He could prove to be a similar talent to one star who captured the hearts of many during his time in the first team at Goodison Park.

Why Ramazani could be like Gordon for Everton

Academy graduate Anthony Gordon may not have impressed fans when he decided to leave the club for Newcastle United in January 2023, but during his time on Merseyside, he certainly made a good impression.

The winger made 80 appearances for the Toffees in all competitions, scoring ten goals, playing a crucial role during the 2021/22 campaign, featuring in 35 Premier League games.

Former Everton winger Anthony Gordon

He eventually left for £45m – an excellent deal for the club – with Dyche and Co having the opportunity to sign Ramazani, who is a similar player to Gordon according to FBref’s comparison feature.

When analysing their respective stats per 90 last season, the comparison is warranted with the Belgian matching or even bettering Gordon in numerous key areas.

Despite scoring fewer goals than the former Everton man, the “outrageous” Ramazani, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, completed more take-ons per 90, whilst also having a greater take-on success rate.

He also managed to register the same average of goals per shot on target taken, demonstrating that he needs fewer opportunities than Gordon to threaten the goalkeeper – a great talent to have that would improve the Toffees’ forward line after scoring just 40 Premier League goals last season.

Whilst it’s unknown how much a deal for the Almeria talent would cost the club, he would be an excellent signing and one that would be a cheaper alternative to Broja after their relegation back to Spain’s second tier.

His versatility could also be a huge bonus to Dyche, allowing him to play alongside the likes of Calvert-Lewin and Beto if needed.

Sky Sports: Celtic make new approach to sign "intelligent" £10k-a-week ace

With an agreement reportedly reached to sign Paulo Bernardo on a permanent basis, Celtic and Brendan Rodgers have reportedly turned their attention towards sealing a loan deal to welcome a Premier League defender.

Celtic transfer news

Having already welcomed both Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo this summer, Celtic have just nine days to secure further reinforcements before their latest title defence gets underway in the Scottish Premiership, which looks likely to see Bernardo arrive. The Benfica midfielder spent the last campaign on loan from the Portuguese giants, helping Celtic pick up a stunning league and cup double. Now, he looks set to get the chance to make a permanent impact.

The midfielder may not be the only fresh face through the door either, as Celtic look to make a late flurry before the season gets underway. Reports suggest that with a deal on the cards for Bernardo, Scotland's champions have turned their attention towards the Premier League in a renewed attempt to sign a defensive reinforcement.

According to Sky Sports' Anthony Joseph, Celtic are making a new attempt to sign Hugo Bueno on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer, with contact already made. The Bhoys reportedly failed in their attempts to sign the left-back in January, but have now made a fresh approach to secure his signature for the forthcoming campaign.

ByDan Emery Jul 24, 2024

Having fallen behind Rayan Ait-Nouri in the pecking order in the Midlands, Bueno could certainly do with a move away and Celtic may present the perfect opportunity for that. Earning a reported £10,000-a-week at the Premier League side, Bueno's arrival would hardly break the bank at Celtic Park, either, all whilst handing Rodgers quite the addition.

As the Scottish Premiership closes in, Celtic could sign two fresh faces at just the right time.

"Intelligent" Bueno can compete with Greg Taylor

As things stand, Rodgers has Greg Taylor and Adam Montgomery to call on down the left-hand side, but after the latter struggled with injuries last season and is yet to break into Rodgers' side, Bueno could emerge to compete with Taylor for the starting spot.

The Wolves ace has earned plenty of praise during his time at Molineux, including from sporting director Matt Hobbs, who told the club's official website: “He’s intelligent, comes from an intelligent, good family, and what he did have was the attributes where he was going to get the absolutely best out of his ability and it just so happens that the best of his ability is a really good footballer, an under-21 international, and a very good Premier League player.”

Those at Celtic Park saw the benefit of loan players last season when Norwich City's Adam Idah starred in a short-term spell, even netting the winning goal in the Scottish Cup final against Rangers. Meanwhile, the aforementioned Bernardo did enough to reportedly earn himself a permanent move to the Scottish champions.

Beuno may now get the chance to follow a similar path if Celtic's "renewed" attempt to secure his signature is successful.

Arsenal player ratings vs Nottingham Forest: Bukayo Saka brilliance – and magic from Martin Odegaard – gets Gunners back on track

The Gunners roared back to winning ways in the Premier League to close the gap on leaders Liverpool

Arsenal ended their four-game run without a Premier League win in style as they swept Nottingham Forest aside at Emirates Stadium, cruising to a dominant 3-0 win.

Mikel Arteta sprang some surprises with his starting XI, bringing in Jorginho and Gabriel Jesus, with Thomas Partey and Kai Havertz left on the bench. Leandro Trossard was also preferred to Gabriel Martinelli, while Mikel Merino started ahead of Declan Rice.

But the changes led to a really bright start from the hosts and after Jurrien Timber had seen a goal ruled out for offside, Bukayo Saka crashed home a superb goal to open the scoring on 15 minutes.

The hosts dominated the rest of the first half but had to wait for a wonderful goal from Partey, who had been introduced at half-time to replace Jorginho, to double their advantage six minutes after the interval.

And another substitute, 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, put the gloss on a superb team performance when he slotted home his first Premier League goal four minutes from time.

GOAL rates Arsenal's players from Emirates Stadium…

David Raya (6/10):

Barely had a thing to do, but swept up well whenever he was called upon.

Jurrien Timber (8/10):

Excellent. Got forward so well and linked up constantly with Saka and Odegaard. Always in the game.

William Saliba (7/10):

Real physical battle with Awoniyi, which he seemed to really enjoy. Solid.

Gabriel Magalhaes (7/10):

Showed no ill effects from the long trip back from Brazil. Good display.

Riccardo Calafiori (7/10):

Given some problems by the pace of Elanga, but stood up to it well. Good to see him back.

Jorginho (8/10):

Back in the side and was one of the stand out players on the pitch. Controlled the opening 45 and was involved in Saka's goal, showing why he should have played more so far this season. Replaced at half-time after picking up a booking.

Mikel Merino (7/10):

Linked up well with Trossard down the left and showed a real determination to get into the box whenever Arsenal got forward. Decent display.

Martin Odegaard (9/10):

Outstanding. Showed everyone exactly what Arsenal have been missing in his absence. Set up Saka's goal and was involved in absolutely everything.

AFPAttack

Bukayo Saka (8/10):

Sensational goal to open the scoring early on and very unlucky not to get at least another one. The understanding he has with Odegaard is just so important to this Arsenal team.

Gabriel Jesus (6/10):

Surprisingly picked ahead of Havertz. Played his part, even if he didn't break his long run without a goal in the Premier League. Curled one effort just wide in the first half.

Leandro Trossard (7/10):

Much better performance after some under-par displays during the international break. He and Timber brought a nice balance to the left side.

On for the final 10 minutes to replace the tiring Odegaard, curled one effort just wide and then slotted home well to make it 3-0. Excellent impact.

Raheem Sterling (6/10):

A rare appearance from the on-loan Chelsea man. Replaced Saka late on and set up Nwaneri for his goal.

Was bold with his team selection and it paid off. His second-half substitutions all worked as well.

Em menos de um ano, Marllon iguala marca de jogos que teve com o Corinthians em três temporadas

Mithali Raj becomes second woman to score 10,000 runs in international cricket

Mithali Raj has become the first Indian batter, and only the second overall, to score 10,000 runs in women’s international cricket. Raj went past the mark during her innings of 36 in the third ODI against South Africa on Friday, getting there with a flicked boundary off the bowling of Anne Bosch.Raj was dismissed off the next ball, which means she will have to wait a little longer to reach another major milestone – she is now 26 runs away from becoming the first batter to 7000 runs in women’s ODIs. England’s Charlotte Edwards, who ended her career with 5992 ODI runs, is a distant second on that list.Charlotte Edwards, Mithali Raj, Suzie Bates, Stafanie Taylor and Meg Lanning are the top five run-getters in women’s cricket•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Edwards, incidentally, is the only other woman to have scored 10,000 international runs. She made 10,273 runs overall, in a career that stretched from 1996 to 2016.Raj has enjoyed an even longer career. She made her India debut back in June 1999, in an ODI in Lucknow against England, and has so far played 10 Tests, 212 ODIs and 89 T20Is. She now has 663 Test runs at an average of 51.00, 6974 ODI runs at 50.53, and 2364 T20I runs at 37.52.”When you play for so long, you obviously go through different milestones. And this is just one of them,” Raj said after the match. “I think the key for me has always been consistency. I’ve always believed in scoring runs each time I walk out to bat – whether it’s in domestic or internationals, it never mattered.”As long as I get an opportunity to bat, it has to be counted, and that has given me a lot of experience and exposure to work on my game over the years, with the changing standards of women’s cricket and to stay relevant on the international circuit.”Speaking to the media ahead of the third ODI, India opener Smriti Mandhana had reflected on the significance of Raj reaching the milestone.”Getting to 10,000 runs first or second is a huge thing,” Mandhana said. “She is the first Indian to do that, so I think it is something that shows how consistent she has been throughout her career. We have looked up to her, definitely a very proud feeling for all of us in the team.”

Tanveer Sangha hopes for all-format future ahead of red-ball return

The legspinner is set to play his first first-class match since the middle of 2022

Tanveer Sangha still wants to become a three-format bowler for Australia, as the spinner prepares to play his first Sheffield Shield match in almost two years.Sangha will turn out for New South Wales against Queensland on Monday, marking his first red-ball game for his state since March 2022.In the time since, the legspinner has played two ODIs and seven T20Is for Australia while missing large parts of Shield action while overseas or injured.Related

Such is Sangha’s predicament, the 22-year-old has now played more white-ball matches for his country than red-ball matches at first-class level. But despite that, Sangha maintains red-ball cricket can still be a priority as he hopes to one day add a Baggy Green to his limited-overs playing caps.”I definitely think all three formats is definitely up for play,” Sangha said. “There’s plenty of time still. Everyone says I’m young. I’m 22. You’re not going to peak until late 20s.”It’s the most difficult skill in cricket. I’m still learning, trying to pull leggies, wrong’uns, toppies, sliders and executing all these different variations. I’m just trying to think long term rather than short. It’s a long career if I do make it and I do get through all of it.”Sangha does not have to look far to see the impact of white-ball cricket on Test hopefuls. Adam Zampa has long stated his desire to earn a Baggy Green, but Sangha’s NSW and Australian white-ball team-mate has played only two Shield games in the past four seasons.Glenn Maxwell is another player virtually devoid of Shield matches in recent seasons, with only one since 2019.”That’s what I’m learning now while I was away,” Sangha said. “What can I still do while on a white-ball tour to make sure I’m maintaining my red ball-skills, shapes and bowling style?”Is there something I can just do once a week? Where in one training session I just focus on something specific to red ball, just so I can maintain it That’s the balance that now I’m trying to learn to be an all-format player.”For now, though, Sangha can also see his red-ball game benefiting his white-ball cricket as he maintains a goal of this year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.”Red ball there’s so much more repetition. There’s so much more trying to get the batter out because they have so much time,” Sangha said. “But in white-ball cricket, they want to come at you. There’s more opportunity to get them out.”In red ball there’s quite a bit of thought and time that goes into trying to plan to get a better out, rather than just trying to be consistent. That’s where the art of spin bowling is. I’ve seen it with Warnie, [Ravichandran] Ashwin and Gaz [Nathan Lyon]. Each season I’m trying to get better and better, and not just be the same bowler in a few years time.”
