It’s the type of X-factor that can win tournaments.”The most pleasing thing is that she’s usually doing that to us in the nets, so to see her do it in a game, you can see that it’s so hard for bowlers to know where to bowl when you don’t know where she’s hitting it,” Delissa said. “She’s reversing spinners, she’s reversing pace bowlers then she also has the power to go over the top of the fielders. We get to see it day in, day out at training so really nice to see her come out in those games and fire.”The wicket-taking has been fairly evenly spaced with Amelia Kerr and Jess Jonassen claiming 16 apiece in one of the tournament’s most formidable spin duos, while Grace Harris has bagged 13 at just 9.07 and Nicola Hancock’s nippy pace bowling has brought 10 scalps.The turnaround was sparked, in a large part, by a belief that the early table was not a reflection on how they were playing. Big pictureIt’s been 13 months since Pakistan last played an ODI, and while that’s the sort of drought you might associate with their opponents, Zimbabwe, Chamu Chibhabha’s men did complete a three-match series against Bangladesh before cricket was shut down in March. But with this series serving as the beginning of the World Super League for both sides, it’s the start of a new cycle that should, if things go according to plan, lead to India 2023. Merely getting there automatically would represent a colossal achievement for Zimbabwe after the dramatic manner they missed out on the last World Cup, while Pakistan need to guarantee there are no hiccups now that, for the first time, qualification for the traditionally established major teams is no longer guaranteed.It might be absurd to say this, but Pakistan’s “recent” ODI form is about as good as it gets, with six wins on the spin, stretching back to the halfway point of the 2019 World Cup. That might not be terribly relevant given the time between their last ODI and this one, but most of the personnel are the same, and against a Zimbabwe side short of much to cheer since that unsuccessful World Cup qualification campaign, it makes the home side firm favourites.Pakistan’s recent memories of playing Zimbabwe are positive ones, with openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq enjoying great runs of form in the reverse leg two years ago. The future looks a little brighter, but as Elton Chigumbura and Chibhabha insisted, they need results in the present. Throughout the most recent Premier League campaign, Manchester United’s biggest issue was the lack of reliability of their centre-backs.

First-choice centre-back Lisandro Martinez was missing for most of the campaign through injury, and they really missed a Virgil Van Dijk-esque defender.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is desperate to bolster the backline this summer, and therefore, signing a new centre-half will be the biggest priority at Old Trafford.

This week, reports in Germany via journalist Florian Plettenberg have given the latest update on Man Utd’s interest in Matthijs de Ligt.

It’s mentioned that the Dutch ace is still a transfer target for United this summer, alongside Jarrad Branthwaite and Leny Yoro.

Plettenberg says that "Ten Hag is still a great admirer of De Ligt", who will be sold this summer by Bayern Munich if a reasonable sum arrives.

It’s said that despite not making an offer yet, United currently value the centre back at around £42m this summer, with Plettenberg providing a further update that the deal is becoming "more and more concrete".

Why De Ligt would be United’s own Van Dijk

Back in the 2018/19 season, De Ligt was viewed as the most promising centre-half in the world by many, having led Ten Hag’s Ajax to the Champions League semi-final.

At just 19 years old, the defender captained Ajax to the league title and domestic cup, but since then, he’s not exactly lived up to the expectations that he once had.

The “generational” talent, as dubbed by football scout Jacek Kulig, is currently playing his football in Germany for Bayern Munich after joining in 2022.

His second season at the club saw him start just 16 times in the Bundesliga, with Thomas Tuchel opting for other options more often than not, but his statistics don’t match those of someone who’s built for being a rotation option.

As you can see from the table above, it’s no surprise that De Ligt is classified as the most ‘similar player’ to Van Dijk across the top European leagues by FBref.

Firstly, what separates the two Netherlands defenders from the rest is their brilliance in possession, boasting immense composure, retention, and technical quality.

This is shown by their pass accuracy, touches, and passes completed, while their progression stats prove that their passing range and vision are absolutely sublime.

From a defensive perspective, De Ligt and Van Dijk are both extremely dynamic and physical, often dominating every attacker they play against, regardless of whether they’ve got pace or strength.

On top of that, they are just as dominant in the air, often towering above opponents, which gives them a huge advantage in both penalty boxes.

However, it’s not just FBref that notices the Dutch duo’s similarities, with Manchester City’s Nathan Ake also mentioning that their athleticism, aerial dominance, and technical ability are alike – noting that De Ligt has "got a lot of the same attributes as Van Dijk".

Overall, signing a player of De Ligt’s quality could seriously elevate United’s performance levels, and he’s the type of defender who could ensure years of dominance.

Newcastle submit £17m Ferran Torres bid

According to reports in Spain, relayed by Barca Universal, Newcastle have made an offer for Barcelona forward Ferran Torres. It is believed that the Magpies’ proposal is worth an initial €15m plus another €5m in variables, which works out at £17m in total.

The 24-year-old made the move to the Catalan giants from Manchester City in 2022 and is under contract until 2027. Capable of playing anywhere across the front line, Newcastle fans will know Torres well after he scored a 24-minute hat-trick for City at St James’ Park during a 4-3 win back in 2021.

Following that display, Pep Guardiola hailed the Spaniard, saying: “This is his first season in England and his numbers are exceptional in terms of goals. I may have to think about playing him as a striker. He can be a No.9. He is an alternative, he is brilliant.

“The movement he creates as a striker, the runs in behind. His last goal – the ball hits the crossbar and where does it come? He is there. He has the smell, the striker’s nose, being intuitive to be there one second before the ball arrives. He has this talent and is a good finisher.”

In total, Torres, who picks up a total of £215,000-a-week including bonuses, has scored 25 goals and has provided 13 assists for Barcelona in 113 appearances, and by the looks of things, a return to England could be on the cards.

Midfielder Thomas Partey is among that crop, with the 31-year-old entering the final 11 months of his contract at Arsenal. There is no signs of an extension offer on the table for Partey, who made just 14 Premier League appearances under Mikel Arteta last season.

He also earns a reported £200,000 per week at the Emirates Stadium, making him one of their highest-paid players, so the time could be now for Edu and co to sell to the highest bidder.

Alongside Partey, Fabrizio Romano has reported that defender Jakub Kiwior may well depart north London upon the arrival of Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

Another player who appears almost destined to depart is goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, coming after he lost his spot to David Raya between the sticks last season. Reliable journalists like Charles Watts have reported that Ramsdale is extremely likely to leave Arsenal in the coming weeks.

"It’s a matter of when Ramsdale leaves, not if," said Watts to CaughtOffside.

“The key thing for Arsenal is getting value for money. I saw an initial fee of £15 million mentioned in reports last week and that is quite frankly ridiculous. Arsenal signed Ramsdale for nearly £30m two years ago and he has developed into a far better 'keeper since then.

According to The Boot Room, Arsenal have made an approach to sign Lunin from Real amid his contract standoff, and if it doesn't appear like any progress can be made on fresh terms, then Arteta's side could look to strike a deal.

The 25-year-old is highly regarded at the Bernabeu, and Perez especially won't want to lose Lunin. The La Liga side's president tipped the 'keeper to become "one of the future’s biggest names" when he first signed for Real back in 2018 (via The Statesman).

It hasn't even been a week since the transfer window flung open and clubs are already hard at work looking for those players who could help them reach the next level, and Arsenal are no different.

Mikel Arteta's side came agonizingly close to ending their two-decade Premier League title drought last season, and with a few more players, they could take that final step this year.

Edu Gaspar and Co welcomed in a number of quality additions last year, such as David Raya, Declan Rice, and Kai Havertz, and based on recent reports, he could soon welcome the perfect partner for the latter.

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Arsenal have opened talks with the agent of Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams over a possible move this summer.

Alongside the Gunners, Bailey claims that Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Liverpool have also been in contact over a potential move for the winger, who has a £43m release clause in his current contract.

While the level of interest from other sides is less than ideal for the Gunners, the two main stumbling blocks to a potential deal lie in the player's desire to play for Barcelona and his enormous wage demands, which reach up to £300k-per-week.

However, Arsenal remain interested in the young star, and if Edu and Co have a chance to secure his services, they should take it, as he could be incredible alongside Havertz.

Why Williams would be a great teammate for Havertz

As things stand, it looks as if Arsenal might be sticking with Havertz for at least another year as their primary striker and while that may leave some fans feeling underwhelmed, his record when starting up top for the side is genuinely impressive.

In 18 starts as the North Londoners' number nine last season, the Aachen-born star scored eight goals and provided seven assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.2 games – elite stuff.

Moreover, according to FBref, his 14 goals across all competitions last season came from an expected goals figure of 13.3, meaning he slightly overperformed.

This brings into question the narrative that he isn't clinical and highlights why Williams would be an ideal teammate.

In his 37 games in 2023/24, the Pamplona-born winger scored eight goals and provided 19 assists, which equates to a goal involvement every 1.37 matches and, most importantly, highlights his incredible ability to create chances for his teammates.

For example, FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, places the 21-year-old in the top 2% of wingers for assists.

This, combined with his rapid pace, direct nature, and love of "terrorising defences," as data analyst Ben Mattinson puts it, suggests that the Copa del Rey winner's arrival could dramatically increase the German's goal tally.

Ultimately, Williams looks to be an incredibly talented and dynamic winger, and if Arsenal can find a way to agree to personal terms with him this summer, then they should absolutely bring him to the Emirates – Havertz would undoubtedly benefit massively.
