Brisbane Heat set out to make a 'great statement' as they peak at the right time

“People wrote us off before we even came here, we just had to keep backing ourselves,” Delissa Kimmince says

Andrew McGlashan25-Nov-2020That was Grace Harris on November 8, just a few minutes after finishing unbeaten on 81 against the Melbourne Stars but unable to get the Brisbane Heat across the line. It left the defending champions with one win in seven matches. The quest for a hat-trick of titles looked a long way away.Fast forward to November 25, the eve of the second WBBL semi-final, and Harris’ words have been played out with stunning accuracy: seven wins in a row and the Heat finished second in the table, earning a knockout clash with the Sydney Thunder. They still need two victories to secure the title – one that would surely be their best – but it would be a brave person to bet against them despite the calibre of the other three sides. Knowing to win can prove crucial. The build-up to the season had been dominated by talk of how they would replace Beth Mooney’s runs and Sammy-Jo Johnson’s wickets. As they lurched to the mid-point of the group stage it was looking like too great of a task. However, in the subsequent weeks the team has come together.

“We haven’t panicked in those moments when things could have hit the fan, we are really trying to hunt as a pack.”Delissa Kimmince

“People have focused a lot on the players we’ve lost and not the people we’ve had in our side,” Delissa Kimmince said. “Everyone has gone out and done their job. That’s the most pleasing part, we aren’t relying on just one or two people to win us games.”We are here as a whole squad, including the staff and the work they do behind the scenes. People wrote us off before we even came here, worrying about the players we’ve lost, and if we could come out and show them we aren’t about two players that would be a great statement.”A look at particularly the Heat’s batting returns illustrates Kimmince’s point. Georgia Redmayne, in many ways filling Mooney’s enormous shoes at the top of the order, is their top-scorer with 332 runs but that leaves her 11th on the overall list at the end of the group stage – all the other semi-finalists have somebody above that. However, in the latter half of the tournament players have delivered when it has mattered, none more so than Laura Kimmince who has smashed 123 runs off 49 balls in her last four innings. It’s the type of X-factor that can win tournaments.”The most pleasing thing is that she’s usually doing that to us in the nets, so to see her do it in a game, you can see that it’s so hard for bowlers to know where to bowl when you don’t know where she’s hitting it,” Delissa said. “She’s reversing spinners, she’s reversing pace bowlers then she also has the power to go over the top of the fielders. We get to see it day in, day out at training so really nice to see her come out in those games and fire.”The wicket-taking has been fairly evenly spaced with Amelia Kerr and Jess Jonassen claiming 16 apiece in one of the tournament’s most formidable spin duos, while Grace Harris has bagged 13 at just 9.07 and Nicola Hancock’s nippy pace bowling has brought 10 scalps. The turnaround was sparked, in a large part, by a belief that the early table was not a reflection on how they were playing. It was not a time for ripping up the playbook.”We knew we were still playing pretty good cricket, we just weren’t winning the one or two overs within the game that in T20 can win you those games,” Delissa said. “We knew our plans were right, we just had to keep backing ourselves. We’ve fought hard the last seven games but really tried to enjoy our cricket at the same time.”We haven’t panicked in those moments when things could have hit the fan, we are really trying to hunt as a pack. That’s what’s been so pleasing.”If winning a tournament is about peaking at the right time, the Heat may have judged it perfectly.

Pakistan have all bases covered as Zimbabwe come calling

Both teams finally embark on their journey to qualify for the 2023 World Cup

Fakhar Zaman slams one through the off side•AFP

Big pictureIt’s been 13 months since Pakistan last played an ODI, and while that’s the sort of drought you might associate with their opponents, Zimbabwe, Chamu Chibhabha’s men did complete a three-match series against Bangladesh before cricket was shut down in March. But with this series serving as the beginning of the World Super League for both sides, it’s the start of a new cycle that should, if things go according to plan, lead to India 2023. Merely getting there automatically would represent a colossal achievement for Zimbabwe after the dramatic manner they missed out on the last World Cup, while Pakistan need to guarantee there are no hiccups now that, for the first time, qualification for the traditionally established major teams is no longer guaranteed. It might be absurd to say this, but Pakistan’s “recent” ODI form is about as good as it gets, with six wins on the spin, stretching back to the halfway point of the 2019 World Cup. That might not be terribly relevant given the time between their last ODI and this one, but most of the personnel are the same, and against a Zimbabwe side short of much to cheer since that unsuccessful World Cup qualification campaign, it makes the home side firm favourites.Pakistan’s recent memories of playing Zimbabwe are positive ones, with openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq enjoying great runs of form in the reverse leg two years ago. Both have since seen the runs dry up to some extent, and will be eyeing these opponents to try and get back on track. The pace bowling, too, looks set to be a major weapon for the hosts, with both Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf in the form of their careers, the recently concluded National T20 Cup a good indicator about the challenges Zimbabwe should expect to confront. While this might appear to be rock bottom for Zimbabwe, it really is worth stressing things are much improved in the last year or so. The devastating exodus feared after the World Cup qualifiers hasn’t quite happened, with the core of that side still very much present. Sikandar Raza was rumoured to be walking away from the game, but remains very much with the side, while Blessing Muzarabani, who had walked away for a Kolpak deal, is back with his national team.Zimbabwe were suspended by the ICC for alleged political interference in July 2019, but ended up being reinstated four months later. They now play an international series well before far more prominent Full Members have managed to organise one post shutdown, and there genuinely is an exciting group of young talent. The future looks a little brighter, but as Elton Chigumbura and Chibhabha insisted, they need results in the present. Friday might represent a good opportunity to catch their rusty opponents out.The Zimbabwe squad after landing at the Islamabad airport for their tour of Pakistan•PCB

In the spotlightUsman Qadir finds a way to dodge a Pakistan cap through one misfortune or another, but that run may come to an end on Friday. With Shadab Khan ruled out of the first ODI, Qadir is the only available legspinner in the squad, and should the surface look accommodating, may well be in line for a call-up. Called up for a T20I tour of Australia a year ago only to warm the bench, and set to play the third T20I against Bangladesh in January only for the game to be washed out, Qadir has had to patiently wait his turn. He’s built up game time on the Pakistan domestic circuit, and was thoroughly serviceable in the National T20 Cup earlier this month, taking 10 wickets at a strike rate of 18.6. He may have a long way to go to seriously challenge Shadab, but getting a game would be a start. It is unlikely to imagine a referendum in the UK five years ago having an impact on this Zimbabwe side, but the UK’s vote to leave the European Union is what ensures Blessing Muzarabani is here in Pakistan. With the Kolpak loophole closed, his time at Northamptonshire ended earlier this month, and it’s a sign of how highly he’s rated that he finds himself thrown straight into the national side. A lot may have happened since, but it’s worth restating what a colossal loss he was deemed to be for Zimbabwe when he opted for the Kolpak route after the side’s heartbreaking failure to qualify for the 2019 World Cup. He was instrumental in taking Zimbabwe to the brink, holding his nerve in final-over thrillers against Afghanistan and Scotland, and with two years of experience in the UK, should return a much-improved bowler.Team newsPakistan’s line-up is hard to predict what with them not have played ODI cricket since October 2018, but Shadab’s absence could open up a place for Qadir to make his debut. Khushdil Shah, likewise, could get his first ODI cap, while conditions may dictate whether Faheem Ashraf or Imad Wasim get the nod.Pakistan (possible): 1 Fakhar Zaman, 2 Imam-ul-Haq, 3 Babar Azam (capt), 4 Haris Sohail, 5 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 6 Iftikhar Ahmed, 7 Khushdil Shah 8 Imad Wasim/Faheem Ashraf, 9 Haris Rauf, 10 Usman Qadir/Musa Khan, 11 Shaheen AfridiZimbawe (possible): 1 Brian Chari/Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, 2 Chamu Chibhabha (capt), 3 Craig Ervine, 4 Brendan Taylor (wk), 5 Sean Williams/Wesley Madhevere, 6 Elton Chigumbura, 7 Sikandar Raza, 8 Wellington Masakadza, 9 Carl Mumba, 10 Donald Tiripano, 11 Blessing MuzarabaniPitch and conditionsThe pitch has a tinge of grass, so seamers could find themselves in the game. Dry, sunny weather means there’s no threat of interruption, while an early start means dew shouldn’t be a factor either.Stats and trivia Brendan Taylor is one six away from 100 ODI career sixes; in the current Zimbabwe side, only Chigumbura (105) can better that Babar Azam is 641 runs away from 4000 ODI runs. Should he get there in fewer than nine more innings, he will beat Hashim Amla to become the fastest man to the landmark Quotes”I keep insisting we can’t afford to take any side lightly, and Zimbabwe present a challenge we have to take seriously”
“We’ve been a team that doesn’t really quite get over the line, and it’s something that we’ve talked about. There’s a lot more desperation to win. And that is the mentality at the moment. And considering it’s super league games, each game that we play is going to be very crucial for us”

Man Utd plot concrete move for their own Van Dijk in £42m talent

Throughout the most recent Premier League campaign, Manchester United’s biggest issue was the lack of reliability of their centre-backs.

First-choice centre-back Lisandro Martinez was missing for most of the campaign through injury, and they really missed a Virgil Van Dijk-esque defender.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is desperate to bolster the backline this summer, and therefore, signing a new centre-half will be the biggest priority at Old Trafford.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a United target who could just become their very own version of Liverpool’s captain.

Man Utd's search for a centre-back

This week, reports in Germany via journalist Florian Plettenberg have given the latest update on Man Utd’s interest in Matthijs de Ligt.

It’s mentioned that the Dutch ace is still a transfer target for United this summer, alongside Jarrad Branthwaite and Leny Yoro.

De Ligt

Plettenberg says that "Ten Hag is still a great admirer of De Ligt", who will be sold this summer by Bayern Munich if a reasonable sum arrives.

It’s said that despite not making an offer yet, United currently value the centre back at around £42m this summer, with Plettenberg providing a further update that the deal is becoming "more and more concrete".

Why De Ligt would be United’s own Van Dijk

Back in the 2018/19 season, De Ligt was viewed as the most promising centre-half in the world by many, having led Ten Hag’s Ajax to the Champions League semi-final.

At just 19 years old, the defender captained Ajax to the league title and domestic cup, but since then, he’s not exactly lived up to the expectations that he once had.

Matthijs de Ligt

The “generational” talent, as dubbed by football scout Jacek Kulig, is currently playing his football in Germany for Bayern Munich after joining in 2022.

His second season at the club saw him start just 16 times in the Bundesliga, with Thomas Tuchel opting for other options more often than not, but his statistics don’t match those of someone who’s built for being a rotation option.

As you can see from the table above, it’s no surprise that De Ligt is classified as the most ‘similar player’ to Van Dijk across the top European leagues by FBref.

Firstly, what separates the two Netherlands defenders from the rest is their brilliance in possession, boasting immense composure, retention, and technical quality.

This is shown by their pass accuracy, touches, and passes completed, while their progression stats prove that their passing range and vision are absolutely sublime.

From a defensive perspective, De Ligt and Van Dijk are both extremely dynamic and physical, often dominating every attacker they play against, regardless of whether they’ve got pace or strength.

On top of that, they are just as dominant in the air, often towering above opponents, which gives them a huge advantage in both penalty boxes.

However, it’s not just FBref that notices the Dutch duo’s similarities, with Manchester City’s Nathan Ake also mentioning that their athleticism, aerial dominance, and technical ability are alike – noting that De Ligt has "got a lot of the same attributes as Van Dijk".

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

Overall, signing a player of De Ligt’s quality could seriously elevate United’s performance levels, and he’s the type of defender who could ensure years of dominance.

Newcastle make £17m bid for £215k-p/w forward who scored hat-trick at SJP

Newcastle United have reportedly submitted a bid in the region of £17m to sign a forward who has previously scored a hat-trick at St James’ Park.

Howe outlines Newcastle’s transfer plans

Eddie Howe and PIF are preparing for what could be a fairly active transfer window in regards to both incomings and outgoings. Speaking back in April, Howe said that due to the club’s current financial situation with FFP, they will need to be “really smart” when it comes to recruitment.

"I think with our current situation and the landscape of the financial position I am not sure we are able to recruit ready made elite players. The players you are trying to get across, I don't think we are in a position to do that and I don't think we were in a position to do that last year.

"So I think we have to be really smart with our recruitment. I think we have to be maybe different to some of the other clubs we are in and around. It is all about the individual player not what bracket they're in. And what they can do for us and how they can take the team or squad forward."

They look to have made a start as well, with Lewis Hall’s loan move from Chelsea set to become permanent and defender Lloyd Kelly set to sign on a free transfer after leaving AFC Bournemouth. Academy additions are being made as well, with the Magpies winning the race ahead of Aston Villa, Brighton and Man Utd for teenage midfielder Chukwudi “CJ” Afumuzor.

The 14-year-old has reportedly completed a medical with Newcastle, who have agreed a fee with Portsmouth. Back to senior signings, though, and it appears as if the club have made an offer for a Premier League winner.

Newcastle submit £17m Ferran Torres bid

According to reports in Spain, relayed by Barca Universal, Newcastle have made an offer for Barcelona forward Ferran Torres. It is believed that the Magpies’ proposal is worth an initial €15m plus another €5m in variables, which works out at £17m in total.

Barcelona forward Ferran Torres.

The 24-year-old made the move to the Catalan giants from Manchester City in 2022 and is under contract until 2027. Capable of playing anywhere across the front line, Newcastle fans will know Torres well after he scored a 24-minute hat-trick for City at St James’ Park during a 4-3 win back in 2021.

Following that display, Pep Guardiola hailed the Spaniard, saying: “This is his first season in England and his numbers are exceptional in terms of goals. I may have to think about playing him as a striker. He can be a No.9. He is an alternative, he is brilliant.

“The movement he creates as a striker, the runs in behind. His last goal – the ball hits the crossbar and where does it come? He is there. He has the smell, the striker’s nose, being intuitive to be there one second before the ball arrives. He has this talent and is a good finisher.”

In total, Torres, who picks up a total of £215,000-a-week including bonuses, has scored 25 goals and has provided 13 assists for Barcelona in 113 appearances, and by the looks of things, a return to England could be on the cards.

Arsenal make approach to sign Real Madrid ace who Perez tipped to be a star

Arsenal have now made an approach to sign one Real Madrid player who Galacticos president Florentino Perez tipped to be a star one day.

Edu seeking potential replacements for Arsenal stars

It could be a summer of one in, one out at the Emirates Stadium this summer – as a host of players are tipped to potentially leave with star names linked to replacing them.

Arsenal set sights on unlikely £52 million Euro 2024 hero who Arteta loves

The Gunners boss is a big fan of his physicality.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 10, 2024

Midfielder Thomas Partey is among that crop, with the 31-year-old entering the final 11 months of his contract at Arsenal. There is no signs of an extension offer on the table for Partey, who made just 14 Premier League appearances under Mikel Arteta last season.

He also earns a reported £200,000 per week at the Emirates Stadium, making him one of their highest-paid players, so the time could be now for Edu and co to sell to the highest bidder.

Alongside Partey, Fabrizio Romano has reported that defender Jakub Kiwior may well depart north London upon the arrival of Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

Another player who appears almost destined to depart is goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, coming after he lost his spot to David Raya between the sticks last season. Reliable journalists like Charles Watts have reported that Ramsdale is extremely likely to leave Arsenal in the coming weeks.

"It’s a matter of when Ramsdale leaves, not if," said Watts to CaughtOffside.

“The key thing for Arsenal is getting value for money. I saw an initial fee of £15 million mentioned in reports last week and that is quite frankly ridiculous. Arsenal signed Ramsdale for nearly £30m two years ago and he has developed into a far better 'keeper since then.

“He’s still young, he’s homegrown, an established England international and has a long-term contract. Yes, interested clubs will know that Arsenal’s stance in any negotiations will be weakened somewhat given he is now clearly behind David Raya in the pecking order, but that shouldn’t mean the club should basically give him away. Ramsdale is a top-class 'keeper and he’s shown that at Arsenal. When you look at what other 'keepers have moved for in the last couple of seasons, a bid of £15m shouldn’t even be one that Arsenal entertain.”

If Ramsdale leaves, attention turns to who will succeed the Englishman, with Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin in Edu's thinking.

Arsenal make approach to sign Andriy Lunin

The Ukraine international's deal expires next year, putting pressure on Real to agree an extension or sell in the coming weeks.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

According to The Boot Room, Arsenal have made an approach to sign Lunin from Real amid his contract standoff, and if it doesn't appear like any progress can be made on fresh terms, then Arteta's side could look to strike a deal.

The 25-year-old is highly regarded at the Bernabeu, and Perez especially won't want to lose Lunin. The La Liga side's president tipped the 'keeper to become "one of the future’s biggest names" when he first signed for Real back in 2018 (via The Statesman).

Arsenal open talks for Havertz partner who’s been "terrorising defences"

It hasn't even been a week since the transfer window flung open and clubs are already hard at work looking for those players who could help them reach the next level, and Arsenal are no different.

Mikel Arteta's side came agonizingly close to ending their two-decade Premier League title drought last season, and with a few more players, they could take that final step this year.

Edu Gaspar and Co welcomed in a number of quality additions last year, such as David Raya, Declan Rice, and Kai Havertz, and based on recent reports, he could soon welcome the perfect partner for the latter.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Arsenal have opened talks with the agent of Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams over a possible move this summer.

Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams.

Alongside the Gunners, Bailey claims that Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Liverpool have also been in contact over a potential move for the winger, who has a £43m release clause in his current contract.

While the level of interest from other sides is less than ideal for the Gunners, the two main stumbling blocks to a potential deal lie in the player's desire to play for Barcelona and his enormous wage demands, which reach up to £300k-per-week.

nico-williams-athletic-bilbao

However, Arsenal remain interested in the young star, and if Edu and Co have a chance to secure his services, they should take it, as he could be incredible alongside Havertz.

Why Williams would be a great teammate for Havertz

As things stand, it looks as if Arsenal might be sticking with Havertz for at least another year as their primary striker and while that may leave some fans feeling underwhelmed, his record when starting up top for the side is genuinely impressive.

In 18 starts as the North Londoners' number nine last season, the Aachen-born star scored eight goals and provided seven assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.2 games – elite stuff.

Moreover, according to FBref, his 14 goals across all competitions last season came from an expected goals figure of 13.3, meaning he slightly overperformed.

Spain'sNicoWilliamscelebrates scoring their sixth goal

This brings into question the narrative that he isn't clinical and highlights why Williams would be an ideal teammate.

In his 37 games in 2023/24, the Pamplona-born winger scored eight goals and provided 19 assists, which equates to a goal involvement every 1.37 matches and, most importantly, highlights his incredible ability to create chances for his teammates.

For example, FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, places the 21-year-old in the top 2% of wingers for assists.

This, combined with his rapid pace, direct nature, and love of "terrorising defences," as data analyst Ben Mattinson puts it, suggests that the Copa del Rey winner's arrival could dramatically increase the German's goal tally.

Ultimately, Williams looks to be an incredibly talented and dynamic winger, and if Arsenal can find a way to agree to personal terms with him this summer, then they should absolutely bring him to the Emirates – Havertz would undoubtedly benefit massively.

R Ashwin: 'When adversities grow, the team comes together'

Spinner believes India have ‘an opportunity to show what mettle we are made of’ and can win the Test.

Sidharth Monga10-Jan-2021A slowing-down pitch and a good start to the fourth innings have given India hope of competing on the final day of the Sydney Test after they fell behind by 94 runs in the first innings and were set 407 to win in four sessions. India ended the first of those at 98 for 2 after Rohit Sharma and Shubhman Gill put together the biggest opening stand of the series on either side.”The pitch has been quite slow, and it has been good to bat on,” R Ashwin said on the final evening. “In fact, the balls that we saw misbehave yesterday, the ones that went up and down, has also kind of come down because of the slow nature of the pitch. I also think the roller is playing a role. And because the game started off with the pitch not seeing a lot of sun, the wicket is getting better to bat as the sun is belting down on it. As a team behind in the game, like we are, we are hopeful we can put a good performance in the first session tomorrow.”Related

However, Ashwin was not bullish about India’s prospects. In public utterances, this team has spoken about not thinking of draws but starting such final days with only winning the Test on their minds. Adelaide 2014-15 and The Oval 2018 are examples of that, but Ashwin said that the team will look to bat according to the situation on Monday, depending on the kind of bowling they are faced with.”In a Test match you don’t look at the overall score on the final morning and say we must go for a win,” Ashwin said. “It just doesn’t happen quite so much like it happens in white-ball cricket. There are passages of play in the red-ball game that are much more different and you are playing on a day-five pitch. And also sometimes when you play to the merit of the ball, you stay in, sometimes you put yourself in a situation in the last session where you can take an initiative, but you don’t go into the morning saying [Ash, run through]. It can happen.”Maybe he did call earlier and I didn’t hear it in the noise. For me that is one of the reasons I was looking at where the ball was going. If you have not received a call, you are looking at help [as to] where the ball has gone. For me that was that. I have played cricket with proper basics to know that front of the wicket is the striker’s call so for me there was no reason to be looking behind had I got a call.”
