Slot could restore Nunez by unleashing forgotten £41k-p/w Liverpool star

Liverpool supporters get the sense that they are still awaiting the watershed moment that will change the narrative surrounding Darwin Nunez and propel him into the conversation for the Premier League and Europe's finest forward.

Sure, many recognise his elite-level talent, that innate ability that convinced Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool to fork out a club-record fee, rising to £85m with add-ons, to bring him to Merseyside in the summer of 2022, but the cogs haven't really combined as yet.

But after two campaigns, the discourse pertaining to Nunez's standing in English football can't shake the schism, slashing through Anfield's pitch, that boils down to the Uruguay international's wayward shooting.

Incoming head coach Arne Slot will hope that his aggressive, purposeful press will serve Nunez the chances needed to succeed, tweaking his role in Liverpool's team to cater to his distinctive qualities.

Of course, Slot would be wise by forging a bond between Nunez and another star, and given that Fabio Carvalho is now seeking a second shot at success on Merseyside after spending the 2022/23 campaign out on loan, the Dutchman might just have his answer.

Why Liverpool signed Fabio Carvalho

Liverpool signed a teenage Carvalho from Fulham in a £5m package back in May 2022 following an excellent breakout year in the Championship, scoring ten goals and adding eight assists from 33 matches.

Versatile, fast and ferocious, Carvalho's Liverpool career got off to a flyer as he hopped on board during his team's 9-0 romping over Bournemouth at the start of the 2022/23 Premier League season, leading Klopp to dub him a "special player".

But his fruitful start to football in Liverpool did not stop there, with the £41k-per-week ace bagging off the bench for the second top-flight fixture on the trot, though this time sending Anfield into a rapturous cheer of a different kind, thumping home from close range against Newcastle United at a crucial last-gasp period.

Sadly, that was about the extent of Carvalho's exciting start to Premier League action, last starting during a damaging 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest in November 2022, branded with a 5/10 match rating by 90min's Grey Whitebloom, who singled out his lack of athleticism.

Given that Roberto Firmino had called him a "star" with fantastic "character on the pitch", it's clear to see that his natural prowess with the ball suggests that he could yet find his feet at the club, especially now that the managerial pillars have shifted.

How Fabio Carvalho could fit in under Arne Slot

After falling further and further into obscurity under Klopp, it was hardly surprising that Carvalho was shipped out this season, and while he failed to impress in Germany with RB Leipzig, his quality has been restored during a brilliant spell with Hull City in the Championship, scoring nine goals from 20 matches.

Sure, the Championship is contested at an ostensibly lower level than the Bundesliga, but Carvalho's struggle with Leipzig did not come down to an inability to match the division's quality, but rather, from a failure to acclimatise with German outlet Kicker citing his lack of rhythm, confidence and assertiveness as key reasons behind his issues.

His position was exacerbated by the blistering success of positional peer Xavi Simons, who has been heralded as a "superstar" by journalist Antonio Mango for his formidable campaign in Leipzig, and so it was no surprise that Liverpool recalled their nifty young midfielder in January, with just one Bundesliga start to his name.

Fabio Carvalho for Hull City

And what a decision that proved to be, with Carvalho sent back to the Championship to rediscover his mojo after being knocked off-kilter on loan and, admittedly, after a bright start under Klopp, who deigned to use the young talent after the first few months of the 2022/23 campaign.

As per FBref, Carvalho now ranks among the top 6% of forwards across divisions similar to the Championship over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 4% for pass completion, the top 2% for progressive passes and tackles, the top 1% for interceptions and blocks and the top 13% for progressive carries per 90.

The "magic" – as was said by Hull correspondent Barry Cooper – in Carvalho's skill set has been restored, with his successful stint with the Tigers propelling him to the height of the second tier, widely regarded as one of the finest forwards in the division during his five-month stay.

With an inborn knack for scoring now hardened and shaped to a fine point, Slot could find that his tactical style works a treat for Carvalho's progressive, energetic approach, blending his striking ability with defensive solidity and a creative flair.

His goalscoring skills at the MKM Stadium are simply the cherry on top of a natural talent that may yet see him succeed on Merseyside, perhaps even forging a wondrous partnership with Nunez in a tale of duel comebacks.

Nunez might be a wasteful forward but he isn't half influential with his interweaving motions and clever darts into space, pulling away defenders as if by magnetic force to open up pockets for his peers.

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez

This is reflected through the Uruguayan's playmaking ability, ranking among the top 4% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 12% for shot-creating actions and the top 14% for progressive carries per 90.

Slot is fluid in configuring his frontline but he principally fields a 4-2-3-1 formation, which will likely see a central midfielder pulled further toward the brow of the pitch, sitting behind, say, Nunez, or alternatively Cody Gakpo or Diogo Jota.

But Nunez, Liverpool's record player acquisition, will be the main man if he can figure out how to stem the rot that has seeped into his shooting boots over the past two years in English football.

Dominik Szoboszlai is the obvious player to slot – ha ha – into that No. 10 position, but the Hungarian has endured an imperfect debut year at Liverpool and Carvalho could be the perfect foil.

Indeed, the Portugal U21 international is a more natural goalscorer with more balletic swagger in his forward movements, and this would serve Nunez well, with the dynamism between the pairing creating an impactful level of interchangeability, always keeping defenders guessing.

Rangers could sign lethal Kabadayi partner in £3.5m move

Glasgow Rangers will be in the market to improve their playing squad over the coming weeks as they look to bounce back to win more trophies next season.

The Light Blues fell short in their pursuit of the Scottish Premiership title and lost the SFA Cup final, which meant that they ended the campaign with one trophy – the League Cup.

Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen are now hard at work to reshape the squad and build a team that can compete with their Glasgow rivals for multiple pieces of silverware next term.

Oscar Cortes, on loan with an obligation to buy from Lens, was the first addition of the summer transfer window, before Jefte signed on a permanent deal from Fluminense.

The Gers then added a third addition when they confirmed that central defender Clinton Nsiala will officially sign for the club at the start of next month, after his contract with AC Milan expires.

There is still over two months left to go in the transfer window, though, and that means that there could be plenty more incoming to come through the doors at Ibrox after these first three pieces of business.

Rangers' interest in £3.5m winger

Last month, the Scottish giants were linked with an interest in adding Ferencvaros wide attacker Adama Traore to their squad ahead of next season.

It was reported by Africa Foot that Rangers were in talks with the Hungarian outfit over a deal to sign the 29-year-old forward on a permanent deal.

The outlet claimed that several other European teams are also interested in the experienced winger, which suggests that there will be plenty of competition to land his signature over the coming weeks and months.

Africa Foot also revealed that any deal for Traore would cost the Gers, or any of the other sides eyeing him up this summer, a fee of around £3.5m.

Koppen and Clement could now swoop to add him to their attacking options for the 2024/25 campaign alongside another winger they are reportedly closing in on.

Football Insider reported that Yusuf Kabadayi is set to become the club's fourth addition of the summer on a permanent deal from Bayern Munich.

The report claims that the Scottish giants are in pole position to sign the 20-year-old attacker, who just spent the season on loan with Schalke.

Rangers could now land a lethal partner for him on the opposite wing by moving to sign Traore for £3.5m from Ferencvaros after they bring Kabadayi to Ibrox.

Why Yusuf Kabadayi could be a good signing for Rangers

At the age of 20, the German forward looks set to arrive in Glasgow as a player with plenty of room to grow and potential to improve over the years to come.

Supporters may not expect him to hit the ground running and emerge as a key player in the first XI for the manager from the first whistle of next season, as he is still an inexperienced player at first-team level.

The 2023/24 campaign was his first taste of senior football and the Germany U20 international showed glimpses of his quality with four goals in 11 2. Bundesliga starts for Schalke, on loan from Bayern Munich.

It is his form at youth level for the Bavarian outfit, however, that may excite fans who are looking forward to seeing Kabadayi in a Rangers shirt on the left wing next season.

Playing for Bayern II, U17s, and U19s, the left winger caught the eye with his ability to score and create goals, which led to U23 scout Antonio Mango describing the young forward as being "incredibly prolific".

2.6

As you can see in the table above, averaged a goal every 2.6 matches as a winger across his spells in the three academy sides, to go along with ten assists.

These statistics suggest that the potential is there for Kabadayi to offer a big goal threat from a left wing position for Rangers if he can step up to the Premiership and consistently deliver at first-team level over the months and years to come.

Traore could also come in and offer a similar skillset, in terms of his ability to score goals at an impressive rate, but on the other side of the pitch on the right wing, potentially creating a lethal wing duo for Clement.

Why Rangers should sign Adama Traore

The Light Blues should swoop to sign the 29-year-old wizard because his form for Ferencvaros suggests that the potential is there for him to be a fantastic signing for the club.

He started the 2023/24 campaign on fire with a sensational return of six goals and four assists in six Europa Conference League qualifiers to secure a place in the group stage.

As you can see in the table above, Traore also chipped in with seven goals and one assist in eight starts in the Hungarian top-flight after his European exploits.

He ended the season with an eye-catching 14 goals and five assists in 27 appearances in all competitions, which came after his sublime return of 18 goals and 11 assists in 46 matches for the club in all competitions during the 2022/23 campaign.

This means that the Mali international has racked up 32 goals and 16 assists in 73 matches for Ferencvaros since his move in the summer of 2022, which is one direct goal contribution every 1.52 games on average across a two-year period.

His form for the Hungarian side has also come after his fantastic return of 25 goals and 16 assists in 61 appearances for FC Sherrif between the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.

These statistics suggest that the potential is there for Traore, who journalist Bence Bocsák once lauded as "superb", to offer a huge goal threat on the right flank for Rangers, as he has been a consistent goalscorer for Ferencvaros and Sherrif over the last four seasons.

Rangers could land lethal Cantwell partner in swoop for £6.8m star

The Light Blues are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the centre-forward this summer.

ByDan Emery Jun 10, 2024

Therefore, the £3.5m-rated star could be a lethal partner for Kabadayi, who looks set to be Rangers' next signing, as they could operate on either flank and cause constant problems for defenders with their ability to score goals from a wide position.

Dyche personally monitoring Everton move for £20m Branthwaite successor

Everton have identified a £20m rising star as a potential replacement for centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, according to reports.

Everton face battle to keep Branthwaite

Everton's 2023/24 campaign was hampered by their points deductions – the Toffees ended the season sat 15th in the Premier League, but with the best defensive record in the divison outside of the top-three – conceding 51 goals in 38 outings.

A key reason for this was the displays of 21-year-old sensation Branthwaite, who made 35 league appearances and was handed a call-up to England's provisonal Euro 2024 squad before being cut.

ByEthan Lamb Jun 16, 2024

After such a stellar season, however, the Merseyside outfit are facing a battle to keep hold of the Englishman, with Manchester United working hard to get a transfer completed this summer.

In a bid to solve their defensive issues, United are seemingly targeting the Everton and England centre-back as they aim to sure up their backline for the forthcoming campaign. Last week, it was claimed that Man Utd have agreed personal terms with Branthwaite over an Old Trafford transfer, with a contract worth between £150-160k per week on the table.

However, the two clubs are yet to come to terms of a transfer fee, with United having a £45m bid knocked back recently as the Toffees eye a figure closer to the £75m mark.

Sean Dyche and co. are now seemingly on the lookout for potential replacments for Branthwaite should a transfer to Old Trafford go through, with both Manchester United's Victor Lindelof and Hull City's Jacob Greaves named as potential targets.

Everton keeping tabs on "outstanding" Branthwaite replacement

Now, an update on Everton's pursuit of Greaves has been provided. Speaking about Greaves' transfer rumours last year, ex-Hull City head coach Liam Rosenior labelled the defender as "outstanding".

"It's wonderful that a player who has come through our academy has been spoken about in this way," he said. "I love it when my players are being linked with clubs higher up because it means they're doing a good job and it means the team is doing a good job.

"Jacob's an outstanding player. Would I rather have him here from a footballing point of view? One hundred percent, because he's got so much potential and so much to learn. Every single club has to make a decision based on their best interests. Sometimes that's keeping a player and sometimes that's selling a player and I'm sure we'll make that decision whenever that comes up."

Jacob Greaves in action for Hull City in the Championship.

But while Hull were able to fend off transfer interest in the centre-back last year, they face another tough battle to do so in the current window after missing out on promotion to the Premier League. This comes with Hull Live reporting Everton are considering a move for the 23-year-old this summer, with Dyche believing that the defender can fill the void in his team's backline should Branthwaite move on.

Hull do not want to lose Greaves, who has a reported price-tag of £20m, but the Yorkshire outfit will consider selling the stopper if he makes clear his desire to test himself in the Premier League. And speaking earlier this month, Hull owner Acun Ilicali stated that Greaves does indeed want to play in the English top-flight.

"Greaves wants to play in the Premier League. He's such a nice boy, he just said to me (his wish to play in the Premier League)," he said. "I love him as a character. He's a real captain."

Rangers want to sign "exciting" 5 ft 10 replacement for Ryan Jack

Glasgow Rangers recently confirmed that several players will not remain with the club heading into the 2024/25 campaign as they will upon the expiry of their contracts at Ibrox this summer.

Jon McLaughlin, Kemar Roofe, Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic, and John Lundstram are all due to move on from Glasgow on free transfers ahead of next season.

This means that Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen may need to work hard and move quickly to identify and sign targets to replace the players who are leaving for nothing.

The Light Blues are already looking to sign a talented young central midfielder who could come in as an exciting replacement for Jack this summer.

Rangers want to sign 20-year-old whizkid

According to Football Scotland, the Gers want to sign Penarol whizkid Damian Garcia to bolster their options in the middle of the park ahead of next season.

The report claims that the talented young midfielder is on the club's shortlist of targets to improve the team, following the signing of Oscar Cortes on loan from Lens earlier this month.

It states that head of recruitment Koppen has flown to Cancun for the TransferRoom summit to discuss potential deals with other club chiefs, and that Penarol had a representative at the event.

Football Scotland then goes on to speculate that talks could have taken place between the two representatives, of Rangers and Penarol, over a potential deal to sign Garcia.

Whilst it remains to be seen how far advanced a move may or may not be for the Uruguay U20 international, the Gers are seemingly keen to sign the South American gem and he could be an exciting replacement for Jack this summer.

Why Damian Garcia would be an exciting Ryan Jack replacement

South American football writer Nathan Joyes described it as an "exciting" link for Rangers due to the profile of signing it would represent, which is one of the reasons why it could be a fantastic deal in response to the Scotland international's exit.

The Light Blues would be bringing in a 20-year-old whizkid with plenty of years left ahead of him to grow and develop to replace a 32-year-old veteran who did not have much, if any, development left to go through.

Along with being a long-term signing due to his age and potential, Garcia could also come in as an immediate upgrade on the former Aberdeen maestro.

As you can see in the table above, Garcia's form in Uruguay during the 2024 season has been more impressive than Jack's was during the 2023/24 Scottish Premiership campaign.

They both provide a similar threat in possession in terms of scoring and creating goals but the 20-year-old offers considerably more from a defensive perspective, with his superb ability to recover the ball and make interceptions to cut out opposition attacks.

This is why the 5 foot 10 prospect could be an exciting replacement for Jack as he is a young gem who has already displayed fantastic quality at first-team level this year, particularly when it comes to his work out of possession in the middle of the park.

Throwback Thursday: With Mauricio Pochettino set for his first match, remember when Bora Milutinovic, Jurgen Klinsmann and others made their USMNT debuts?

Ahead of the Pochettino's debut, GOAL looks back at how previous USMNT coaches made their first impressions

Mauricio Pochettino will be on the sideline Saturday for his first match in charge of the U.S. men's national team. It feels like a long-time coming. Nearly two months after news of his potential arrival first broke on Aug. 15 – and a month out from his official hiring on Sept. 10 – Pochettino's USMNT debut has finally arrived. This is the start.

It's a complicated path forward. With the 2026 World Cup being hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico, Pochettino won't have to navigate World Cup qualifiers. But he will have a task much tougher: preparing this team to host on home soil. That process begins on at 9 p.m. ET Saturday against Panama in Austin, Texas, and continues next Tuesday when the USMNT face Mexico in Guadalajara.

Pochettino, of course, will be measured by how he does in 2026, not 2024. All coaches, ultimately, are judged by tournaments, and Pochettino will be no different. But it all has to start somewhere.

With that in mind, it's worth looking back at Pochettino's predecessors in the U.S coaching role. How did they fare in their opening camps and, was that any sort of indication of what was to come?

GOAL looks back at the debuts of previous modern era USMNT coaches, as they started on their paths to World Cups.

    Bob Gansler (1989-91)

Ahead of what would ultimately be the USMNT's first World Cup appearance in 40 years, the federation handed the reigns to Bob Gansler, who was previously the U20 coach.

His first match in charge was a World Cup qualifier at Costa Rica, which, even back then, was a tough place to play. The USMNT fell 1-0, but had a chance for revenge just a few weeks later on home soil. Up 1-0 late, goalkeeper David Vanole made a crucial penalty kick save on Mauricio Montero, kickstarting the path toward the World Cup.

We all know what happened next. The famous Shot Around the World goal from Paul Caligiuri that November sent the U.S. to the World Cup for the first time since 1950, with Gansler's young squad ultimately getting thumped by Italy. Czechoslovakia and Austria on their way out in the group stage.

    Bora Milutinovic (1991-95)

After struggling mightily in 1990, U.S. Soccer needed a new voice, one that would create a team whose sum was greater than its parts. Enter Bora Milutinovic, who already had plenty of international experience as a coach with Mexico and Costa Rica.

His first game in charge came in 1991, when he led the USMNT to a 1-0 victory over Uruguay in Denver. The goal came from a familiar face – current Sporting KC boss Peter Vermes – who took advantage of a botched offside trap from Uruguay to score the winner.

That was a big statement ahead of the Gold Cup that summer – the U.S. triumphed and claimed the inaugural trophy at the LA Memorial Coliseum.

It was a sign of things to come. Under the experienced head coach, the USMNT ended up advancing to the knockout rounds as hosts of the 1994 World Cup, making it out of the group for the first time since 1930.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Steve Sampson (1995-98)

Previously an assistant under Milutinovic, Steve Sampson took the reigns in 1994, initially as an interim coach. His first two matches ended in defeat, starting with a 1-0 loss to Belgium and a 2-1 loss to Costa Rica in friendlies.

The U.S. turned it around form there, defeating Nigeria and Mexico in the run up to that summer's Copa America. The USMNT ultimately made it all the way to the third-place game, where they fell to Colombia after taking down Mexico and Argentina along the way.

Sampson led the team into the 1998 World Cup, where they were eliminated in the group stage once again after earning zero points against Germany, Yugoslavia and Iran.

    Bruce Arena (1998-2006, 2017)

The only man to ever coach the team at two World Cups, Arena is the USMNT's most successful head coach. His time in charge, though, began with a fairly quiet start.

Arena's first game came in November 1998 as the U.S. hosted Australia in a friendly in San Jose. It finished scoreless, with defender Carlos Llamosa being sent off int he final minutes of the match. The next game, a friendly against Bolivia, also finished 0-0, but the U.S. then got on track with a 3-0 triumph over Germany for Arena's first win.

Arena built the USMNT up in the years that followed, leading the team all the way to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup, which remains the best U.S. performance. He also claimed three Gold Cup titles, but left his post after a disappointing group stage exit at the 2008 World Cup.

He returned briefly in 2017, but was unable to steady the ship as the U.S. failed to qualify for the 2018 tournament.

The 21-year-old hit double figures for La Liga assists last season and is currently making a name for himself as one of Europe's brightest young forward players. His potential transfer away from Bilbao has also been called one of the biggest stories of this summer transfer window.

Arteta is reportedly driving a move to sign Williams for Arsenal, and it is believed that he's already held talks over joining the club (Graeme Bailey).

Arsenal ready to pay nearly £50 million for Williams

According to CaughtOffside, who have an update on their pursuit, Edu and co are prepared to spend big on the £200,000-per-week forward. They claim Arsenal are ready to trigger Williams' £49 million release clause and beat the likes of Man United to his signing, with the Red Devils also in contention to do a deal and rate him highly.

Arteta's side are one of the more "advancing" sides right now, emerging as serious contenders for his green light, and he could be the ideal option to rotate with Saka next season. The Englishman played 49 games in all competitions last season and was afforded precious little opportunity to rest, so Williams' arrival could allow that.

Plymouth would go on to have the final word, as Morgan Whittaker snatched a 97th-minute winner, but their manager was stuck in the tunnel by then. He had tried to make his way into the stands – as ex-Arsenal boss Wenger once famously did at Old Trafford – but the Manchester United legend was left celebrating with club officials.

WHAT ROONEY SAID

Explaining why he was ordered from the touchline and what happened next, Rooney has told podcast from Sky Bet: “It was a clear foul and they [the officials] have all missed it, and they [Blackburn] have scored from it. So I have gone to the fourth official.”

He added when asked if he had sworn at the fourth official: “Yeah, and I booted a water bottle, but accidentally it hit one of our fans. So I was in the tunnel, I tried a Wenger and I tried to just go in the stand, so I was in the tunnel when we scored, yeah.”
