Fearless Chamari Atapattu needs support to carry Sri Lanka

They were comfortably beaten in Australia last year, but Atapattu showed what was possible

OverviewSri Lanka have lost their 10 most-recent T20Is – a sequence that goes back to November 2018. Of their previous nine completed matches, Sri Lanka only won one, which means they have lost 18 of their last 19 games. Although there is a small measure of professionalism about women’s cricket on the island – the board having announced better contracts, and organised longer tournaments, over the course of the past year – the senior side has not quite delivered on the promise of their excellent run in the 2014 World Cup.They are led, however, by Chamari Atapattu, who on her day is as devastating a hitter as can be found in the women’s game, and is in general a fearless and inspirational figure, both on and off the field. But even her very best innings have sometimes failed to haul Sri Lanka to victory. The team’s fortunes at this tournament may largely depend on how much support Atapattu gains from team-mates.SquadChamari Atapattu (capt), Harshitha Madavi, Anushka Sanjeewani, Hansima Karunaratne, Shashikala Siriwardene, Nilakshi De Silva, Ama Kanchana, Kavisha Dilhari, Udeshika Prabodhani, Achini Kulasuriya, Hasini Perera, Sathya Sandeepani, Umesha Thimashini, Sugandika Kumari, Dilani ManodaraGroup fixturesFebruary 22: New Zealand, Perth

March 2: Bangladesh, MelbourneT20 World Cup historySri Lanka have never made it out of the first round, in six attempts. They have only won seven of the 23 matches they have ever played at the T20 World Cup. Of the opponents they will play in the group stages, they have never beaten New Zealand or Australia, and have beaten India and Bangladesh once apiece in this tournament.Form guideOf their 10 consecutive defeats, only one can be considered to be close. Late last year, they received a 3-0 wallopping at the hands of Australia, in Australia. In one of those games, Atapattu hit 113 off 66 balls, but Sri Lanka had been so modest with the ball, they still lost by 41 runs.Key playersAside from Chamari Atapattu, who is clearly the talisman, plenty will be expected of allrounder Shashikala Siriwardene who is a former captain and among their most experienced players in the squad. Siriwardene got starts in the recent tour of Australia, but wasn’t quite able to convert those into substantial scores. Since 2018, though, no Sri Lanka bowler has taken more than her 23 wickets. Anushka Sanjeewani, the only batsman apart from Atapattu to make a T20I fifty since 2018, will also be expected to chip in with the bat. What would be a success at the tournamentTwo victories. That would probably be about as much fans can hope for, given the 24 months this team has had. They will hope to beat Bangladesh in the final group game, but will hope to do so having already upset one of New Zealand, Australia or India.

Meeting in next few days as Chelsea set for talks to sign £210,000-p/w star

Chelsea are set for face-to-face talks this week over signing a £210,000-per-week star, with Todd Boehly's transfer plans now taking effect.

Boehly tipped to sign striker despite PSR worries at Chelsea

Much has been made of potential PSR worries at Chelsea, coming after two seasons of heavy spending under Clearlake Capital's ownership.

Chelsea now set to make star player available this summer amid PSR worries

He’s been a standout in Pochettino’s team.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 5, 2024

The club spent over £400 million last summer in an effort to back manager Mauricio Pochettino, with some financial experts like Stefan Borson predicting even tougher sanctions than the likes of Nottingham Forest and Everton if they're charged with breaches.

There have even been claims that Chelsea are gearing up to sell star players like Conor Gallagher in an effort to balance the books, but all of this hasn't stopped Pochettino's side from making transfer plans for this summer window.

They've been widely tipped to sign a new striker later this year, as Chelsea look to add more goal threat in the final third and bring in a number nine who can add 25-plus goals per season.

One name who refuses to go away in this regard is Napoli star Victor Osimhen, who has been one of Serie A's most clinical marksmen over the last few years.

“I think Chelsea will be there,” said Fabrizio Romano on the race to sign Osimhen this summer.

"The interest is still there. It is really important to understand what is happening; first of all with the FFP situation because Chelsea do not want to overpay, so it is important to know how much the package is going to be for Victor Osimhen.

"We already know about the release clause between €120m-€130m with Napoli so Chelsea and other clubs are waiting to see if Napoli can be flexible but usually with their president, De Laurentiis, it is usually very tough to go there and negotiate, especially for a fantastic player like Victor Osimhen."

The Nigeria striker has scored 12 goals and assisted three others in 19 appearances, and was a key star in Napoli's run to the Serie A title last year.

The 25-year-old recently signed a new £210,000-per-week contract, containing the aforementioned release clause, and a new report by Il Mattino (via Napoli Magazine) has shared an interesting update on Chelsea's pursuit of the forward.

Chelsea meeting scheduled in next few days for Osimhen talks

According to the newspaper, a Chelsea meeting is scheduled with Napoli in the next few days over Osimhen, specifically to understand whether they are willing to pay his release clause, with Paris Saint-Germain also keen.

If not, a more formal negotiation will need to be started to see just how high Chelsea or PSG are willing to go. The race for his signing appears to be slowly hotting up, and it will be interesting to see if Pochettino's side can navigate PSR to win it.

Coronavirus outbreak: Heather Knight signs up for NHS volunteer scheme

England captain to help transport medicine and make calls to people in isolation

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Mar-2020England captain Heather Knight has signed up to be a National Health Service (NHS) volunteer during the coronavirus outbreak.Knight only returned from Australia, where she led England to the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup, 10 days ago and is now living under the UK’s lockdown rules with her boyfriend in Bristol. She revealed in her BBC column that she had volunteered for the scheme that will see people support the health service by delivering food and medicine, transporting patients to appointments and making calls to those in isolation.”I signed up to the NHS’s volunteer scheme as I have a lot of free time on my hands and I want to help as much as I can,” Knight said. “My brother and his partner are doctors, and I have a few friends who work in the NHS, so I know how hard they are working and how difficult it is for everyone.”More than half a million people signed up when the volunteer programme was announced on Wednesday. The following day, people from around the country took a moment during the evening to applaud the NHS from their residences.”Standing on our doorstep, joining in the #ClapForCarers was incredible, and getting involved and volunteering will help even more,” Knight said.”I’m going to get the car out as I’ve volunteered to transport medicine, and also speak to people who are self-isolating. If someone is home alone, you can ring them up and chat. They have had so many people sign up.”The ECB, meanwhile, has indicated that it could consider installing coronavirus checkpoints and isolation units at grounds, as it examines the possibility of resuming cricket behind closed doors this summer.Steve Elworthy, the ECB’s director of events, said games would need take place inside a “sterile” environment, likely with fewer than 500 people in the venue. “So it’s how you test them at the gate, the isolation units that you have to put in,” he told the . “These are considerations we are thinking about.”

Arsenal chasing first title in 20 years as crunch matches await

Mikel Arteta is attempting to guide the Gunners to their first Premier League title in 20 years, as they fiercely contend with both Man City and Liverpool.

Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal think £120,000-a-week star is ideal for Arteta

Arsenal's imperious start to 2024 has attracted worthy praise, with Arteta's side scoring a brilliant 38 in their last 11 games and averaging over three goals per match as a result.

The possibility of them ending City and Liverpool's stranglehold on English football dominance from the last half a decade is very real, but their next test is a tough one, as they gear up to take on top four-chasing Aston Villa on Sunday.

"What they’ve done since Unai came in," said Arteta on Villa.

"He's made a huge impact at the club in terms of performances and consistency, it’s unbelievable what they are doing. They’re still in European competition and they played last night so it's really impressive with what they’ve done."

While Arteta gears up for an all-important title run-in, sporting director Edu is working on transfer targets for the summer, and must decide on the futures of surplus Arsenal players as well.

One of them, 20-year-old Charlie Patino, is out of contract at the end of this season once he returns from his loan spell at Swansea City.

Blackpool midfielderCharlie Patino

The midfielder has been a regular under Luke Williams in the Championship this term, contributing with goals and assists, but it appears he may not have a future at Arsenal in the long term.

Patino won't sign Arsenal extension and works to find new club

According to Pianeta Milan, as translated by Sport Witness, Patino 'does not intend' to renew his contract with Arsenal and has instructed his agents to find him a new club this summer.

He is attracting interest from Italy, with both Juventus and AC Milan keeping tabs on the situation, and he is labelled a "great opportunity" considering his contract is about to run out and they could sign him for free.

"He is 18 years old, he can deal with the ball in any area of the pitch, go past people left side, right side," said Michael Appleton during his loan spell at Blackpool in 2022/23.

"I said when he came to the club that he's as good as anyone I’ve seen dealing with the ball and with good movement of the ball, as you’ve seen tonight, he can play as a six, as a ten and as an eight. He’s got a really, really good future ahead of him.

"He was outstanding tonight, especially in that second half. He controlled the game, it was his game, he played at his tempo; when he wanted to speed it up, he sped it up; when he wanted to slow it down, he slowed it down; when he wanted to switch the play, he did it."

Farke drops Gruev and starts "machine" in predicted Leeds lineup v QPR

Leeds United will know picking up yet another victory on Friday night away at Queens Park Rangers will see them edge closer to an automatic promotion triumph, with Daniel Farke's men absolutely desperate for an immediate return to the Premier League.

The Championship doesn't work like that, however, and Marti Cifuente's Hoops won't be pushovers by any stretch of the imagination – the Spaniard in charge at Loftus Road has steered them out of the drop-zone in remarkable fashion, since joining in October last year.

It could well even end up being another second-tier classic like Leeds' 4-3 away win at Middlesbrough last time out, but Leeds fans travelling all the way down to London will no doubt just want a more straightforward game with the three points then returning up to West Yorkshire comfortably.

Farke could look to tinker with the Whites lineup that raised the away end's blood pressure against Boro, with Ilia Gruev potentially dropping out in two changes…

1 GK – Illan Meslier

Leeds United's Illan Meslier

Despite putting in a 'flappy' performance against Boro, as was described by Yorkshire Evening Post Graham Smyth at full-time, Illan Meslier should stay put in goal for the trip to QPR.

The Frenchman will know his display at the Riverside Stadium fell short of his standards for the campaign so far, with the lofty goalkeeper picking up 19 clean sheets in the division this season away from this horror show.

2 RB – Sam Byram

Leeds defender Sam Byram.

Sam Byram was picked at right-back for the clash against Michael Carrick's men, passing his assessment competently enough to be rewarded with another start at QPR.

Winning seven duels in the barnstorming 4-3 victory, the experienced 30-year-old will hope his display against QPR comes with a clean sheet at full-time after such an exhilarating and draining affair against Boro.

With Connor Roberts out injured, the former Norwich City man could well end up making that full-back spot his own in the crunch matches to come.

3 CB – Joe Rodon

Leeds defender Joe Rodon.

Joe Rodon was exposed at points last time out, notably tangling with Meslier to help Isaiah Jones net early on for the hosts.

It wasn't the Tottenham Hotspur loanee at his unbelievable best, but the Welshman still would walk off the pitch with seven clearances managed and a 90% pass accuracy in-tact despite looking shaky in patches.

4 CB – Ethan Ampadu

His compatriot, Ethan Ampadu, also wasn't completely at the races at the Riverside, the Whites captain notably caught out with a long ball over the top towards the end of the contest for Emmanuel Latte Lath to head over Meslier.

Still, the numbers from the 4-3 affair suggest that the former Chelsea youth player wasn't a disaster throughout.

Winning 100% of his duels like Rodon, Ampadu also notched up a key pass in the enthralling contest to help his team out when they rampaged forward.

5 LB – Junior Firpo

Junior Firpo

Junior Firpo certainly contributed going forward for his gung-ho away side in the 4-3 win, crossing expertly into the box for Patrick Bamford to instinctively fire in for 2-1 on the night.

Revealing after the game that he was unwell in the build-up, nobody would have noticed unless the ex-Barcelona man had stated.

Winning his fair share of duels in the game too, with six successfully won from eight attempted, Farke will want the same commitment levels from Firpo away at QPR alongside his magic going forward.

6 CM – Glen Kamara

Ilia Gruev might not be so lucky to keep his place for the clash under the lights at Loftus Road, putting in an unmemorable performance at the Riverside.

The former Werder Bremen man would only manage 34 touches of the ball, which was less than Meslier on the night, and failed to stand out centrally as a result.

Smyth was critical of Gruev's first-half showing, stating that he 'couldn't get control' of the game in the opening 45 minutes, and dished out an unsatisfactory 6/10 rating to the Bulgarian midfielder consequently.

Described as an "absolute machine" by ex-Leeds great Jermaine Beckford on Sky Sports when the Whites beat Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, Glen Kamara could well replace Gruev for the game in West London now.

7 RM – Wilfried Gnonto

Wilfried Gnonto

Wilfried Gnonto will just be buzzing to pick up from where he left off against QPR, having terrorised the Boro defence all night in the 4-3 win.

The Italian attacker will be even more assured that he will get the nod to start owing to Daniel James picking up a troubling injury at the Riverside late out when substituted on for Gnonto, but the electric 20-year-old would have likely been chosen anyway based on his slick showing last game.

Gnonto scored the crucial third goal to steer Farke's men to a dramatic win, not caring one bit with loud shouts that his strike was offside by confidently firing past Seny Dieng.

Wheeling away to celebrate with a wide grin after bagging, Gnonto will hope he can run over to the Leeds away support packed into Loftus Road after scoring another vital strike on Friday night.

8 CAM – Archie Gray

Archie Gray shone in a more attacking role against Carrick's stubborn hosts, placed in this spot with Byram picked at right-back.

Gray looked far more comfortable and unshackled from his defensive responsibilities subsequently and will likely get the call to start here again versus QPR.

9 CAM – Georginio Rutter

Georginio Rutter

Georginio Rutter would have frustrated and delighted the Leeds masses in equal measure at the Riverside, lackadaisically giving the ball away numerous times in the crunch clash but also bombing forward with skill and grace over and over again to carve out opportunities to score.

One such dazzling run would give Leeds a penalty to level the scores early on, but the Frenchman only completing seven accurate passes would also have irked the Whites fanbase.

Still, Rutter's unpredictable nature going forward is an effective calling card and could end up catching out QPR.

10 LM – Crysencio Summerville

Crysencio Summerville, much like his partner in Gnonto down the right flank, played out of his skin away at Boro by firing in two vital goals to help his team get back to winning ways in some style.

The Dutchman's second strike was typical of his season's goal back catalogue, curling in a fierce strike whilst the 'keeper looks on helpless to the effort rippling in.

Farke would be a fool to drop Summerville for the game at QPR, knowing he could be the difference-maker against the Hoops.

Arsenal eyeing ‘unstoppable’ Jesus upgrade who was in London on Sunday

Following their disappointing exit from the Champions League and equally disappointing Premier League loss to Aston Villa a couple of weeks ago, Arsenal responded in the best way possible by taking apart Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in the space of seven days.

Mikel Arteta's side showed that they aren't just going to roll over and let Manchester City waltz to the title like last year. Instead, they look ready to fight until the last game of the season.

The Gunners put five goals past the Blues and three past Spurs, and yet, based on recent reports, they could be even more lethal next season as they have been linked to one of the most clinical strikers on the continent, a striker who has similarities to former Gooner Lukas Podolski and someone who could spell trouble for Gabriel Jesus.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Italian outlet CalcioMercato.IT, Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez is being monitored by several major European clubs ahead of the summer transfer window, but Arsenal and their North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur currently hold a 'greater interest.'

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

While the competition from the likes of AC Milan and Napoli is far from ideal for the Gunners, the report also reveals that the Mexican international was in attendance for the Derby on Sunday afternoon, and while that likely means Spurs are trying their utmost to convince him of their project, watching Arsenal go 3-0 up by half-time can only have helped Arteta's project look the more appealing.

Additionally, despite the 23-year-old attracting so much attention from Europe's elite sides, the report claims that Feyenoord would accept an offer of around €50m – £43m – which in today's market isn't unreasonable.

Feyenoord's Santiago Gimenez

Ultimately, Arsenal may have a fight on their hands to secure the striker's signature this summer, but considering his valuation, Jesus' poor goal return this season, and the similarities to former fan favourite Podolski, they should absolutely go for it.

How Gimenez compares to Jesus

So, before we get into the comparisons between Gimenez and Jesus, what similarities does he share with Podolski? Well, for starters, the pair are both attacking players who mainly rely on their deadly left feet to get their names on the teamsheet. Both of them are six foot as well, meaning that they can't rely on their physical stature alone to get them into goalscoring positions.

Lukas-podolski-arsenal

Aside from football, neither man was born in the country they currently represent. Podolski moved to West Germany from Poland at three years old, and Gimenez moved to Mexico from Argentina at just two years old.

With that said, how does the Feyenoord ace stack up to the man he'd likely replace at the Emirates if he arrived this summer? Well, from a pure output perspective, there is no competition at all.

In his last two seasons, the former Cruz Azul gem has scored 52 goals and provided ten assists in just 90 appearances, whereas the former Manchester City star has scored 19 goals and provided 14 assists in 66 games for the Gunners.

This means that the "unstoppable" Mexican forward, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has averaged a goal involvement every 1.45 games in the Netherlands. In comparison, the Arsenal ace has averaged a goal involvement every two games in red and white, and perhaps most damning of all for a striker, he possesses a conversion rate of just 7% this season.

Away from goals, the Buenos Aires-born star is also far more reliable than the São Paulo-born ace from an availability perspective, as in the last two seasons, he has missed just three games for the Rotterdam side, whereas the Gunners frontman has missed a whopping 33 games since signing in summer 2022.

Ultimately, Jesus has been an important player in Arsenal's recent revival, and his ability cannot be denied. However, when it comes to being an out-and-out goalscorer, he cannot hold a candle to Gimeneze, and when availability is factored into the equation as well, signing the Mexican this summer becomes a no-brainer.

Spurs were rinsed by Poch’s "deadwood" who earned more than Van de Ven

The wheels may be coming off ever so slightly for Tottenham Hotspur at the moment, with four defeats on the bounce, but the overall feeling around the club is far more positive than it was just a year ago, thanks to Ange Postecoglou's progressive management.

The Australian manager has harkened back to the aesthetically pleasing style of football played under Mauricio Pochettino in N17 but pushed his players to be even more forward-thinking on the pitch.

The results haven't necessarily come, but considering how negative the team were under Antonio Conte just last season, it's impressive to see how much the 58-year-old has already changed them.

Ange Postecoglou.

That said, the transition to a more dynamic style of football was made easier thanks to the club finally getting rid of several players, such as Davinson Sanchez, who had clearly been around too long.

Davinson Sánchez's time at Spurs

Sanchez joined Pochettino's Lilywhites in the summer of 2017 after an impressive year playing for Dutch giants Ajax, where he made 47 appearances, scored seven goals, provided two assists and made it to the Europa League final.

Upon arriving in the capital, there was an understandable level of excitement considering his previous displays in Amsterdam, so he made his full debut for the club in just the fourth Premier League game of the season – a 3-0 away win against Everton.

In his first year at the club, the Caloto-born centre-back would make 41 appearances across all competitions, but unlike his time in the Netherlands, he failed to score a goal or provide an assist.

Tottenham Hotspur's Davinson Sanchez

Unfortunately for all involved, the following five seasons would get progressively worse for the 58-capped international as the club would go from genuinely challenging for major honours to languishing in midtable and conceding a whopping 63 goals in his final campaign.

While it certainly wasn't all Sanchez's fault, he received a lot of criticism for his less-than-stellar performances. At the start of last season, pundit and former professional Jamie O'Hara labelled him "one of the worst players I've ever seen", and by the end of the campaign, he was describing him as "deadwood" – tell us how you really feel, Jamie.

Overall, it was a move that failed on all accounts, and after making 207 appearances for the club, in which he scored five goals and provided one assist, he was finally sold to Galatasaray last summer after draining Spurs of millions of pounds.

The finances of Sanchez's Tottenham career

Due to his impressive displays for Ajax and the hype building around him at the time, Tottenham paid a staggering £42m to bring him to North London in 2017, making him the club's new record signing. To make matters worse, the then-21-year-old was handed a rather sizable wage of £65k-per-week.

clement-lenglet-davinson-sanchez-tottenham-opinion

What makes it all the more remarkable is the fact that recent centre-back signing Micky van de Ven, who has been winning plaudits all over thanks to his breakneck speed and defensive acumen, is currently earning £50k-per-week, or £15k less than the Colombian did, despite clearly being the better defender.

So, when adding his wages and transfer fee together, Sanchez ended up costing Spurs a whopping £62.4m, which breaks down to around £301k-per-appaearance, £12.4m-per-goal, or £62.4m-per-assist.

At the end of the day, while he isn't the worst player to have played for Tottenham in recent years, Sanchez has to be considered among some of the worst transfers in the club's history due to the sheer amount of money that went to waste.

Novamente o camisa 10 apareceu em bola parada, desta vez, a zaga do Operário tirou, Rafinha pegou o rebote e bateu rasteirinho.

England bowlers to resume training this week

The ECB have confirmed that 18 bowlers will resume training this week as England ramp up plans for a return of international cricket.Although original plans to return to training on Wednesday had to be delayed due to a series of practical issues, the first group of players will attend nets on Thursday. Others will attend on Friday with the rest of the training group – the batsmen and keepers – returning to nets on June 1.ALSO READ: England’s return to training held up by safety protocolsIn the short term, the training sessions are likely to be lonesome affairs. The bowlers will be expected to turn up in the appropriate training kit and with their own batch of cricket balls, bowl into an empty net and retrieve their own ball. A physio, observing social distancing, will be at each venue to accommodate the sessions, with coaches joining the sessions next week. While the ICC cricket committee decided earlier this week only to forbid the use of saliva on the ball, the ECB guidelines also prohibit the use of sweat. And while bowling to a coach wearing a mitt is termed as individual training, the coach will be expected to provide their own mitt, wear a glove on their other hand and wipe down all equipment between sessions. The ECB are yet to confirm the names of those players involved in the sessions, but it is understood they include five from Somerset.ECB guidance on individual training has been sent to players and coaches•ESPNcricinfo Ltd
