Ratcliffe could make a £128m signing that ends Rashford’s Man Utd career

Having been absolutely instrumental last season for Manchester United with 17 Premier League goals, Marcus Rashford hasn’t been able to get anywhere near that this time around.

Last term, the number ten was without a doubt the most influential attacker on Erik ten Hag’s team, but that’s certainly not been the case this campaign.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.

Although the England international has scored seven league goals, he’s been unable to consistently perform, and he visibly looks frustrated.

With that in mind, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to make a blockbuster signing this summer, with an attacking superstar among the list of transfer targets.

Man Utd want to sign a “big name” attacker

According to reports from Spain via TEAMtalk, Man United are weighing up whether to make a move for Rafael Leao this summer.

The Portuguese winger has been excellent for Milan since his arrival, scoring 55 goals and providing 48 assists in 201 appearances, making him almost priceless to the side.

AC Milan's Rafael Leao reacts

Nonetheless, although they are 'eager' to bring him to England, the reported fee that it would take to sign Leao is in the region of £128m, which would make him United’s most expensive signing of all time.

However, the Red Devils aren’t alone in their interest in the Serie A star, with Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain also keeping an eye on him.

What Leao's signing would mean for Rashford

Just like Rashford, Leao was also one of the most frightening forwards in Europe throughout 2022/23, scoring 15 goals and providing ten assists in 28 Serie A starts.

However, the 24-year-old has continued to perform this campaign, picking up 12 goals and assists apiece across all competitions, which is 11 more goal contributions than the United ace.

Rafael Leao for AC Milan.

If Ten Hag’s side were to splash the cash on the former Sporting player, then they would be buying an extremely similar profile to Rashford. That point is further backed when the statistics are compared.

Both players boast almost identical stats to one another across every single metric, but one that stands out as a clear difference is how Leao can act as an extremely productive creator as well as a goal-scorer.

Milan’s number ten has picked up eight assists this campaign, which is the joint-best in the entire Italian top flight, and the fact that he can create makes him far less predictable than Rashford in the final third.

The only other difference is the fact that the "world-class" star, as dubbed by journalist Carlo Garganese, is more direct in his approach and willing to take risks, often attempting to take a player on rather than turn back and pass, a particularly important trait when playing against a defensive side.

However, the main problem with signing Leao lies in the fact that, just like Rashford, he’s at his best when playing as a left-winger, which would ultimately mean that the duo would be fighting for the same spot in the starting lineup.

Unfortunately, neither will settle for an alternative role in the team or consistent rotation, so although the signing of the Portugal international would make United more dangerous, it would come with a cost attached; potentially the end of Rashford's career at Old Trafford.

Box cricket principles bring rewards for Dhawan

On a cold Delhi day, he steered his side to safety against Hyderabad’s three-man pace attack

Sidharth Monga in New Delhi25-Dec-2019

BCCI

Playing his first first-class match in more than 15 months, Shikhar Dhawan might have been forgiven for feeling he was still in England. On a cold Delhi day, he was asked to bat against the seaming ball in nightmarish conditions for top-order batsmen. Dhawan, coming back from an injury, brought all his experience to rescue Delhi from 4 for 2 with an unbeaten 137 scored at a strike rate of close to 70. The persistence of a Test attack was missing, but the conditions called for Dhawan to respect the challenge.Hyderabad’s three-man pace attack – Mohammed Siraj, left-arm quick Chama Milind and M Ravi Kiran – tested the batsmen through the day, taking six Delhi wickets in 66 overs. The next best score was 29. Given the conditions, given the presence of Ishant Sharma in Delhi’s attack, Dhawan felt they already might have enough because at one point even 200 had looked like a fighting score. For Dhawan, set to be back with the India limited-overs squad, it was a satisfying innings because he could use his experience for his first first-class score of 50 or more in 18 months. “With experience, you get an idea what shots to play on which kind of track,” Dhawan said. “I hardly played any drives against the fast bowlers. For long parts I played what we call box cricket: play at balls only close to the body. When I was a 20-year-old boy like the other Delhi youngsters, even I used to play the drive in these conditions.”Dhawan did play an injudicious drive, on 67 off Kiran, but was reprieved by what turned out to be a no-ball. It was critical, though, that he had got himself in when he tried those shots. The most successful bowler for Hyderabad, though, was left-arm spinner Mehdi Hassan, who managed to extract uneven bounce from the pitch. Dhawan said he was itching to hit him out of the attack, but when he looked at the situation – 47 for 3 and 100 for 4 – he had to restrict himself. He did hit two sixes, though, off the other left-arm spinner, T Thyagarajan. That brought up his century moments before tea, much to the pleasure of the small but loud crowd enjoying Dhawan’s batting and some sun amid icy cold winds. The Feroz Shah Kotla crowd is well known for its quips to players, most of which come from its knowledge of the game and awareness of current affairs. When Dhawan reached his fifty, the chant from the crowd was, “KL Rahul.” The crowd was asking Dhawan to score more than KL Rahul, well aware that in Dhawan’s absence, Rahul has made a strong case for himself as the limited-overs opener.Dhawan, a good friend of Rahul, with whom he has opened in Tests before, said he wasn’t thinking of his India spot. “I had nothing on my mind,” Dhawan said. “What has to come to you will come to you. I am a very relaxed person, and I don’t burden my mind with extra thoughts. The way you guys think, I don’t think like that.”For the Delhi crowd, there is more fun in offer as on days two and three Ishant Sharma will look to seal a first-innings lead for the home team. The presence of the two stalwarts has helped Delhi after a lacklustre start to the season. Dhawan said he has made an effort to sit down with the batsmen and share his experiences with them. And he said Sharma was doing the same with the bowlers.

Moyes can solve West Ham’s Bowen disaster by unleashing 5ft 11 "monster"

It's been an interesting season for West Ham United this year, with some spectacular highs – mostly in Europe – and some miserable lows.

David Moyes might not have the entire fanbase behind him at the moment, but as things stand, he has led the Hammers up to seventh in the Premier League and into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League to boot.

However, Jarrod Bowen's injury has ruled the incredibly gifted forward out of tonight's clash with Bayer Leverkusen, so Moyes will have to turn to one of his most reliable performers in his stead.

Jarrod Bowen for West Ham

Jarrod Bowen's season so far

It's been another fantastic season of top-flight football for the former Hull City ace, one in which he has undoubtedly silenced his doubters – if there were even any left at this point.

In his 40 appearances for the Hammers across all competitions this year, the 27-year-old phenom has scored 19 goals and provided eight assists, meaning he is averaging a goal involvement every 1.4 games, which is equal to the highly rated Phil Foden, showing the level at which the Irons star has been operating at this year.

Moreover, the Leominster-born ace has been highly effective in the Europa League as well, scoring one goal and providing three assists in six appearances, or more accurately, just 460 minutes. This means he is averaging a goal involvement every 115 minutes in Europe's second most prestigious competition.

In all, the 5 foot 9 superstar has been an essential cog in Moyes' machine this season, and so his absence from arguably their most crucial game of the season is nothing short of a disaster, especially as the game is against Xabi Alonso's immaculate and practically unstoppable Leverkusen.

That said, there is one player who might be able to do a job for the Scotsman tonight.

Why Moyes should turn to Michail Antonio

Now, Bowen has primarily played as a centre-forward for the Irons this season, and there is no reason to think he wouldn't have played in this role again tonight had he been fit.

Michail Antonio

Therefore, to allow Mohammed Kudus to remain out wide where he has spent most of the season, the player to replace the Englishman must be capable of playing up top, which leaves two realistic options off the bench: Danny Ings or Michail Antonio.

Neither striker has had a particularly great season to date, but while Antonio has missed a large chunk through injury, Ings has simply been relegated to a bench role, which means it's almost certainly going to be the former who leads the line tonight.

Now, while the 5 foot 11 "monster," as journalist Paul Brown has dubbed him, has missed 17 games this year due to a knee problem, he has still been able to make 24 appearances for the Hammers. In these, he has scored four goals – two of which have come in the last month – and provided two assists, proving that he can still do it.

In contrast, the former Southampton marksman has scored just a single goal from 25 mostly substitute appearances.

Ultimately, Antonio is not going to be able to reproduce Bowen's output tonight or the all-around threat he brings. However, he can still be a thorn in Leverkusen's side and a facilitator for the likes of Kudus and Lucas Paquetá, which might just be enough.

Rangers struck gold on £5m star who’s worth more than Bassey in 2024 money

Glasgow Rangers have had success with player trading in recent seasons as they have brought in young talent and sold them on for profit further down the line.

Nathan Patterson came through the academy before his move to Everton and Joe Aribo arrived from League One Charlton and was eventually sold to Premier League side Southampton.

The best example in recent years, however, has been Calvin Bassey as the versatile defender arrived on a free transfer from Leicester City before being sold to Dutch giants Ajax for a club-record fee in the summer of 2022.

Former Rangers centre-back Calvin Bassey.

Sky Sports reported that it was a deal that could rise to £23m – making it the biggest fee received in Rangers history. Yet, if you adjust for football inflation, it is not the biggest sale the club have ever made, as they raked in a huge fee for Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the 2000s.

How much Rangers paid for Giovanni van Bronckhorst

The Light Blues reportedly splashed out a fee of £5m to sign the versatile midfield star from Dutch side Feyenoord ahead of the 1998/99 campaign.

Van Bronckhorst hit the ground running in Scotland with a fantastic return of eight goals and eight assists in 35 Scottish Premiership matches in his debut season.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst

The terrific Dutchman, who could play at left-back, in holding midfield, or in central midfield, went on to rack up 21 goals and ten assists in 107 appearances for the Glasgow giants in all competitions.

His superb form for Rangers across his three years in Scottish football convinced English and Premier League giants Arsenal to swoop in for his signature in the summer of 2001.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's transfer value in 2024 money

As per the Totally Money index, the Gunners paid an initial fee of £12.15m at the time to take him to London, which represented more than £7m in actual profit for the Gers, who had paid £5m to Feyenoord to sign him three years earlier.

However, in 2024 money – which Totally Money has adjusted for footballing inflation through the years – it's suggested that fee of £12.15m would now be worth a staggering £27.4m, which is more than £3m more than the deal Ajax agreed with the Light Blues to snap up Bassey in 2022.

This shows that Rangers struck gold with the signing of van Bronckhorst from Feyenoord in 1998 as they went on to make a staggering profit on the left-footed powerhouse, whose move to Arsenal was for a significant fee that would have been a club-record fee in 2024 money.

As you can see in the table above, the Netherlands international, who – of course – went on to manage at Ibrox, was never sold for more than Rangers raked in for his services as Arsenal and Barcelona both allowed him to leave on a free transfer after three years with each club respectively.

Therefore, the Scottish giants seemingly maximised his value when they decided to sell him in the summer of 2001, which further illustrates how much of a blinder the Light Blues played with his sale.

Liverpool now offered chance to sign Serie A "monster" in £50m+ transfer

Liverpool have reportedly been offered the opportunity to sign a player hailed as a "monster" this summer, in a transfer worth at least £50m.

Liverpool eyeing summer signings

The Reds may still be planning their next manager after Jurgen Klopp, making their summer transfer business tricky at the moment, but that's not to say that numerous players haven't been linked with moves to Anfield.

For example, Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners is seen as a strong target for Liverpool, especially if Xabi Alonso ends up being Klopp's replacement at the end of the season. That's because the Spaniard is a big admirer of the Dutchman, which could suggest that he wants to bring him in.

Another audacious Reds target is rumoured to be Real Madrid star Rodrygo, and while the La Liga side are hesitant to sell one of their biggest assets, the likely arrival of Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain could limit his playing time.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo.

It could even be that the Brazilian is seen as a possible long-term heir to Mohamed Salah as the leader of Liverpool's attack, although there is no reason why the current Reds superstar can't remain at the top level for several years to come.

Georgiy Sudakov, who is one of Shakhtar Donetsk's star men, has also been backed to possibly join the Merseysiders, although they may have to stump up around £85m to get the highly-rated young attacking midfielder.

Liverpool could sign £50m+ "monster"

According to HITC, Liverpool have been offered the chance to sign Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer this summer and have been contacted via intermediaries. He would likely cost at least £50m, though due to his release clause.

The Reds are far from alone in showing an interest, however, with numerous Premier League clubs in the mix, including Chelsea, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Tottenham. The report states that "there is a very real possibility" that Bremer "could be on the move again after just two seasons with the Bianconeri."

Gleison Bremer

The 27-year-old could be an excellent signing by Liverpool in the summer window, considering Joel Matip is expected to leave when his current deal expires. Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk turns 33 years of age this summer and will eventually have to be replaced one day, while Ibrahima Konate's injury-prone nature does have the potential to become problematic.

Bremer possesses the physical attributes to shine in the Premier League, winning 2.9 aerial duels per game in the Serie A this season. That is only bettered by Van Dijk (4.3) and Konate (3.2) for the Reds, showing that he could more than hold his own in the back-line.

Better than Trent: Liverpool ace has seen his value rise 341% since joining

This player might just be the creme-de-la-creme of Klopp’s illustrious era.

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 24, 2024

Whether the new manager feels that a younger option is more ideal is up for debate, however, with the Juventus man now 27, but he is an experienced figure who should stay in his prime for the foreseeable future, and he has been hailed as a "monster" by analyst Ben Mattinson.

Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso is weighing up his options to replace Jonathan Tah should Bayern Munich come calling for the German defender this summer. Free agent Joel Matip is a top choice for the Bundesliga champions should they need to dip into the market, according to Sky Sports Germany.

Alonso turned down the Liverpool job after Jurgen Klopp left his role as head coach but the former Reds midfielder could still have the chance to work with one of the club's long-serving defenders. • DID YOU KNOW?

Matip was a great servant for the Premier League club but missed the entire second half of the season in 2023-24. In the nine top-flight clashes he did feature in, he was only on the losing side once as Liverpool came home in third.
