Scotland humiliated in openerClarke left furious post-matchHit out at journalist in an interviewWHAT HAPPENED?

Clarke was facing the media following Scotland's humiliating 5-1 defeat to Germany in the Euro 2024 opener and was asked about an incident in the match that saw him arguing with set-piece coach Austin McPhee after the Tartan Army conceded following a poor free-kick. But the head coach was perplexed when asked about the exchange after the match.

Speaking in his press conference after the match, Clarke said: "Is that a serious question? We are fine. I can’t even remember it. It’s emotional on the touchline. Ibelieve the players will get over this quickly. I have never doubted my players and I never will."

It was more than just an issue with set pieces for Scotland, who were outclassed in every department by Germany. After conceding early, the Tartan Army will be disappointed with their response and will have to regroup if they are to retain any hope of still progressing from Group A.

Newcastle alongside Spurs in race to sign clinical Albert Gudmundsson

After failing to reinforce the squad during the January transfer window, Newcastle United could be gearing up for a summer of big-money arrivals once again under PIF. The Magpies were fearful of breaching the Premier League's Financial Fair Play rules last month due to their reported losses of £155m, but when the summer window swings open, they may be in a position to spend again.

Newcastle transfer news

With the summer transfer window only a matter of months away, Newcastle's attention away from the action at St James' Park has turned towards reinforcements. Already, names such as Amadou Onana have been mentioned again, alongside Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly, who is set to be a free agent this summer upon the expiry of his current contract.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that the Magpies are keen to sign another top striker to compete with Alexander Isak and the injury-prone Callum Wilson, who has suffered another minor setback recently.

Given Wilson's increasing injury concerns, it's no surprise to see Newcastle linked with another forward. According to Calcio Mercato, Newcastle are in pole position to sign Albert Gudmundsson alongside fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, due to the lure of England's top flight and the duo's ability to meet higher salary demands.

Yet another fitness setback for Eddie Howe to contend with.

Genoa manager Alberto Gilardino refused to sell Gudmundsson in the January window, but a €35m (£30m) offer could see the forward depart in the summer, amid interest from the aforementioned English clubs and Serie A giants Juventus. After an impressive season in Italy, Gudmundsson may well have done enough to earn a big move.

"Devastating" Gudmundsson can replace Wilson

With Wilson now 31-years-old and struggling to stay fit for prolonged periods, it won't be long before Newcastle will be forced to find a replacement. And that's where Gudmundsson could come in for Eddie Howe. The Genoa forward has enjoyed an unbelievably clinical campaign in front of goal and, at 26-years-old, still has plenty of time to step things up even more, especially if he completes a move to the Premier League.

What stands out most from Gudmundsson's stats is his expected goals (xG). The Genoa man has overperformed his xG by nearly double, with nine goals from 4.6 expected, and he wasn't far off that sort of record last season either, nabbing 11 goals from 8.3 expected based on the quality of his chances. In fact, he ranks in the bottom one percent of players in Europe's big five leagues for non-penalty xG, but is in the 41st percentile for actually putting it in the net, suggesting his end product could explode in a superior team who create more chances.

The Newcastle target has also earned deserved praise from former AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman, who told Il Secolo XIX via Football Italia: “They used to say that if Salah was more clinical, he would be playing for Liverpool, and that is exactly what happened. All joking aside, Gudmundsson is a devastating player and also an exemplary professional."

MS Dhoni’s version of down time after a World Cup campaign that took him and his team very nearly to the final itself is to spend a fortnight with the Indian territorial army, an auxiliary unit of the Indian army. The 38-year old wicketkeeper had expressed his unavailability for the tour of West Indies next month and will instead head to the Kashmir Valley. There, he will join the 106 Territorial Army Battalion (Para) and stay with them from July 31 to August 15.”As requested by the officer and approved by Army Headquarters, he will be performing duties of patrolling among other such activities and would be staying with the troops,” a spokesperson for the Indian Army said.Dhoni, an honourary Lieutenant Colonel, was even seen playing India’s first World Cup game with gloves that carried a symbol similar to his regiment until the ICC requested that he remove it because it was against protocol. There has been speculation over how long Dhoni will continue to play cricket for India. On Sunday, when picking the squads for the Caribbean tour, chairman of selectors MSK Prasad said that there were plans in place to groom his successor but insisted that a legendary player like him knows when to retire.

West Ham tussling Brentford with last-gasp January bid made for left-footer

West Ham and Brentford are moving to sign a "very strong" left-footer in January, with David Moyes' side offering his club £13 million already.

West Ham attempting late winter window signings

Technical director Tim Steidten, after sealing a loan move for Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, is now widely reported to be chasing a new winger.

West Ham have been heavily linked with late interest in signing FC Norsjaelland sensation Ibrahim Osman and Al-Ittihad forward Jota, with the east Londoners looking to add a different option out wide.

Jarrod Bowen has been forced to play a makeshift striker role for a good chunk of this Premier League campaign in the absence of Michail Antonio, who recently suffered a rumoured setback in his recovery from a knee problem.

jota-jarrod-bowen-west-ham

Bowen's own brief injury recently, coupled with Mohammed Kudus' trip to AFCON, also highlighted the lack of depth West Ham possess in the winger department.

Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals are currently tipped as major candidates for the exit door as well, with ExWHUemployee even suggesting last week that the Hammers could get both Jota and Osman through the door if the aforementioned are indeed sold.

“It appears that Betis are leading the way with the fact that our former manager Manuel Pellegrini is their manager and he was in fact the man that originally bought Fornals to East London," said Ex on the future of Fornals to West Ham Way.

“The Spanish side hope to complete this signing this window. This could free up further funds and if Benrahma can be sold it raises the chances of us signing both Osman and Jota the two original targets."

Tax issues complicate a deal for Jota, so this is unlikely to be resolved in quick fashion, while it remains to be seen if West Ham can officially seal a move for Osman after well over a week of talks.

In the meantime, other potential attacking signings are being mentioned, and one of them is exciting young Monza forward Valentin Carboni.

West Ham tussle Brentford as bid made for Carboni

According to FCInternews.it, West Ham and Brentford have "come forward" in "recent days" for Carboni, who is currently on loan at Monza from Inter Milan. West Ham have offered around £13 million to sign the Argentine, a figure they're "stuck" on as Inter want no less than £21 million to do a deal.

Moyes' side face stiff competition from the Bees, as this report suggests they could go as high as £15 million in an effort to beat them. However, so far, it stands that both clubs are falling short of Carboni's valuation.

The teenage left-footed attacking ace, called "very strong" by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, has impressed in parts over his temporary spell at Monza – bagging two goals and two assists in 15 Serie A outings.

Confirmed: Liverpool now publicly say Leeds target can leave this month

Leeds United are after a right-back in the time that remains of the January transfer window, having allowed Djed Spence to return to Tottenham Hotspur six months early, and then sent Luke Ayling on loan to Middlesbrough. Daniel Farke has looked at numerous options for the position, including Ben Johnson, Connor Roberts and Neco Williams, but the Championship promotion-chasers haven't made a breakthrough just yet.

Clubs may be wary of letting players go in January, even if they're not regular starters, because it's harder to replace them in the squad in a shorter, mid-season window. However, this may not be a problem in the case of Liverpool's Calvin Ramsay, another of the possible targets for Leeds. The Reds recalled Ramsay from a season-long loan at Preston earlier this month, and it seemed as if they may need him at first amid a pile-up of defensive injuries that saw Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Kostas Tsimikas and Joel Matip all sidelined.

However, with Conor Bradley starting the last two games in Alexander-Arnold's stead and impressing (he won the man of the match award against Fulham in the Carabao Cup semifinal first leg and then provided his first Premier League assist in a 4-0 win over Bournemouth), Leeds have received some good news about Ramsay's availability.

Liverpool confirm Leeds target Ramsay is available

Speaking in a press conference ahead of the second leg of that Fulham tie on Wednesday, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders confirmed that Leeds target Ramsay can leave on loan in the next nine days amid considerable "interest". Lijnders said that the Reds would use Fabio Carvalho and Tyler Morton, both of whom are starting at another second-tier club in Hull City, as a reference point.

Calvin Ramsay

"There's interest – [which] is good. We have to find – with the agent, with himself, with the clubs – the right decision for the player. He needs to have game time, needs to play, have a lot of success. That's why I like the move of Fabio [Carvalho], for example. He plays a lot, is straight away decisive – together with Tyler [Morton].

"Matt Newberry, our head of loans, he's full of business this winter. He needs a holiday after this for sure! These boys all have potential, otherwise they would not be with us. But they need as well the right pathway. What you said, a good loan can do wonders."

This comes after recent reports have confirmed Farke and co have been showing an interest in the young full-back.

Leeds already aware of what Ramsay can do

Since Ramsay arrived at Liverpool from Aberdeen in the summer of 2022, he's seen his progress heavily disrupted by injury. The Scotsman has only made four first-team appearances in that period, two for the Reds and then two on loan at Preston, having grappled with a knee issue and illness.

However, Leeds have been admirers since his days with the Dons, and their recruitment staff will remember his impressive performance in Scotland. In 2021/22, Ramsay, still a teenager at that point, scored one goal and provided nine assists in 33 appearances across all competitions. That form earned him the Scottish Football Writers' Association Young Player of the Year award, a clear marker of his potential.

What Ramsay needs now is a settled run of games without any injury issues, and then he'll be able to reach that level again. 17-year-old Archie Gray has virtually had the right-back position locked down this season, but by bringing in a specialist like Ramsay, Leeds could free him up to move into a more natural midfield role and get the best of both worlds.

Newcastle man who Gary Neville loves agrees terms to leave St James’ Park

It's been a season full of frustration for Newcastle United, who made such significant progress in the previous campaign by qualifying for the Champions League. After a summer of transfers to forget, followed by a limited winter window, they could now see their misery compiled by the potential exit of a vital cog in the St James' Park machine.

Newcastle exit news

Throughout the January transfer window, the likes of Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron and Kieran Trippier were among the players to be linked with moves away from Newcastle, who found themselves walking a profit and sustainability tightrope due to their reported £155m in losses over the last three seasons. Despite that figure, however, Eddie Howe kept hold of his stars.

It remains to be seen whether that will be the case during the summer though, with Joelinton potentially one to keep an eye on. The Brazilian's contract runs out in the summer of 2025 and Howe admitted that he could yet leave, saying via BBC Sport: "He has 18 months left on his contract so it's a possibility he'll be sold in the summer."

Newcastle now winning the race to sign “wonderful” in-demand gem for Howe

This would be some coup…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 14, 2024

Making matters worse, it's not just those on the pitch that the Magpies have to worry about. According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Dan Ashworth has agreed terms with Manchester United to become their first-ever sporting director. Ashworth – currently the sporting director at Newcastle – would take a lengthy period of gardening leave before completing his Old Trafford switch to join up with Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

It would be some blow for Newcastle, given how vital Ashworth's been to their project since 2022, building a squad capable of reaching the Premier League's top four. Just who they get in to replace the former Brighton & Hove Albion man is not yet clear, but Luke Edwards has claimed that former Liverpool man Michael Edwards is a name which has crept up in conversations.

Major blow for Newcastle

One of the most impressive in his role, Ashworth's exit, should it occur, could leave Newcastle's project under PIF in tatters. Meanwhile, Manchester United would be getting the perfect sporting director to finally start to organise the chaos of Old Trafford.

Gary Neville has already given his seal of approval when it comes to Ashworth too, posting on X back in November of last year:

At a time when Newcastle have been left more frustrated than ever off the pitch under PIF, Ashworth's exit would be coming at the worst time possible ahead of a vital summer transfer window. Not only will the Magpies have to think about incomings to improve Howe's side, but also restructuring away from St James' Park, potentially forced to replace their sporting director.

England to prioritise red-ball cricket after World Cup focus – Giles

English cricket will “redress the balance” between red and white-ball cricket over the next few years.Ashley Giles, the managing director of England men’s cricket, accepts that white-ball cricket took priority in the previous four-year cycle and he accepts the strategy, put in place by his predecessor, Andrew Strauss, paid off. England went from also-rans at the 2015 World Cup to champions in 2019.But he also accepts England’s Test cricket may have “suffered a little bit.” England are currently No. 4 in the ICC’s Test rankings while they are No. 1 in the ODI and No. 2 in the T20I rankings. So, while he is keen to pay tribute to Strauss’ influence, he feels that winning the World Test Championship – which is launched at the start of the Ashes series which starts on Thursday – should be the new goal of English cricket. And to that end, he feels the red-ball game should now be given greater priority in terms of planning, scheduling and investment.”When Strauss came in he said we have to swing the balance right towards white-ball cricket and that’s what we did,” Giles said. “All the attention and the way we play county cricket was definitely focused on the shorter formats.”It was the focus we needed. It was the strategy that led to us winning the World Cup which we looked miles away from doing in 2015. It was important that the pendulum didn’t swing back to 50-50, it had to swing right back to white-ball cricket. We had never approached things in that way before in this country.”Has Test cricket suffered a little bit? Well, perhaps a little bit. We need to do that in red-ball cricket now. Whether it’s the World Test Championship or not, Test cricket is really important to us in this country. We haven’t neglected Test cricket for white-ball cricket, but focus has definitely been more on that side and we just need to redress that balance now.”In the future we need to work with the counties on producing future Test players. Our focus has certainly been on white-ball cricket and we need to redress that balance now to try and even things out.”Giles’ task is not straightforward. The county schedule will continue to see white-ball cricket take precedence in peak season – there will be no County Championship cricket played in the white-ball window built for The Hundred and 50-over cricket from 2020 – which means domestic first-class cricket will continue to be played in the margins of the season when pitches tend to provide substantial assistance to seam bowlers. But there some tools available to him. For a start, county cricket is already using a brand of Dukes ball with a less prominent seam that provides a little less help for bowlers. The counties have also been encouraged to provide better batting surfaces in the hope that seamers are required to work harder for their wickets and batsmen can gain some form and confidence in a more meritocratic environment. It is also hoped the combination of flatter wickets and less helpful balls will encourage the development of faster bowlers and spinners. That prioritisation will also be demonstrated in the value of the new central contracts. While players in all formats will receive a substantial pay rise when the new contracts begin in October – those contracted for red and white-ball cricket will earn just under £1m a year before appearance fees – the percentage rise will be greater for those involved in Test cricket. Meanwhile young fast bowlers will be taken on to incremental contracts – a scheme that will replace the fast bowling programme – which will allow the England management to rest them, or place them in overseas cricket, as they see fit. There may also be less leeway for Test players to take part in T20 leagues, including the IPL. While appearances in such leagues have helped England’s player develop in the white-ball game – and while there is a World T20 Cup at the end of next year – Giles is keen to ensure candidates for the Test squad have both rested and reacclimatised to English conditions before returning to the Test team. He hopes the value of the new central contracts – which will see some England players earning between £1.2 and £1.5m a year when appearance fees are included – will diminish the allure of such leagues for his top assets. There may be fewer IPL opportunities for Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, Giles suggested•PTI

Most of all, though, he wants the county game – and the ECB pathways – to deliver better results. That means creating an environment where top-order batsmen have a better chance to develop, where counties are rewarded for producing players and where the qualities required to succeed in Test cricket are replicated and cultivated.”It’s fundamentally important that our county cricket is system is producing good players,” Giles continued. “And what we’ve seen this year is sides preparing better pitches to play on. As a result, scores have been better and there seems to be better cricket round the country; really competitive cricket. The stats would say that when we’ve had a deep and successful [Test] batting order, we’ve had a really strong County Championship with high scores, lots of runs and batsmen scoring 1,000 runs a season. We certainly need the network and county system to work with us.”Even just saying ‘we’re going to win the World Cup’ in 2015 placed a lot of emphasis on our focus in terms of how we grew players, grew talent and spotted talent. Now we do need to redress that, so placing more emphasis on how we support and improve our long-form cricketers. And some of that is about working with the counties and collaborating much more on growing a bigger pool of players to prepare to play Test cricket.”But it not going to be an overnight change. We won’t suddenly start producing dozens of top-order players. In the short term, the Test Championship has to be on our to-do list. It doesn’t get much tougher but we have to have that as a goal. Test cricket’s really important to us and we need to be trying to compete for that Championship and if not this one then the next one.”In the shorter term we’ve got two T20 World Cups. Next year in Australia probably represents a really good opportunity for us to win that and wouldn’t it be great if we could hold both white-ball trophies at once?”Having our resources, we should be trying to compete across as many formats as we can. In the really short term you might swing some of your focus towards T20 cricket instead of 50-over cricket as we’re four years away from another 50-over World Cup. But we need to give Test cricket the focus it deserves.”
