Sky Sports: Manchester United signing Matthijs de Ligt is now possible

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich and reuniting him with his former manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

The United boss is thought to be very keen on the idea of working with De Ligt again after their stint together at Ajax, although any move will of course depend on whether he's still in the job by the summer, with the Red Devils currently languishing down in seventh place in the table.

It's possible that the centre-back could become one of his top transfer targets for 2024 as he considers his future in light of limited game time at Bayern, where he's only started four of the ten Bundesliga games for which he's been available this season. And now, Ten Hag has received further encouragement from Germany.

De Ligt could receive green light to leave

According to Sky Sports, Man Utd target De Ligt could leave Bayern this year. If the reigning Bundesliga champions receive a "suitable offer", it's "likely" that he'll be allowed to move on, and that means his "chapter" at the club could soon be "history". Bayern bosses are aware of the player's current dissatisfaction, and that makes him a "candidate" to move on in the off-season.

De Ligt

Over in Manchester, United are "watching developments closely", and it's very much "conceivable" that De Ligt links up with Ten Hag again in the Premier League unless anything major changes between now and the end of the campaign.

United interest in Bayern target Araujo sets up transfer poker

The next question is how much Bayern will demand for De Ligt. It was only 18 months ago that they paid up to £60m to sign him from Juventus, and already there's talk of a departure. That move ranks as one of the ten biggest defensive transfers in football history, and incidentally, De Ligt also occupies third place after his £77m move from Ten Hag's Ajax to Juve in 2019.

He's still relatively young at 24, and his contract runs until 2027, so all these factors point to sizeable demands, possibly comparable to the £57m outlay for Lisandro Martinez in 2022. That's in addition to the player's reported £263k-per-week salary, which is thought to be one of the highest at the club.

However, if De Ligt remains outside Thomas Tuchel's first-choice XI in the coming months and Bayern express an openness to offers, that naturally reduces the strength of the club's negotiating position because he'd appear a less valuable asset.

One intriguing subplot here is that both United and Bayern have shown an interest in Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo. Tuchel has already added Tottenham's Eric Dier to his squad this month, but he's after another reinforcement in defence, with PSG's Nordi Mukiele also considered.

In a strange way, it might actually be wise for United to let Bayern have a free run at Araujo and hope they can secure his services, before pouncing on De Ligt, who by that point would be categorically surplus to requirements. The stage is set, then, for a game of transfer poker.

Vinicius Jr belongs in the top bracket of world footballers – it's time Real Madrid's brilliant Brazilian got the respect he deserves

The winger, for all of his talents, is an often puzzling omission from the conversation around the game's best

In recent months, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has been repeatedly pestered about the potential arrival of Kylian Mbappe in the Spanish capital. And on every occasion, the great Italian manager has pivoted, avoided the question, and insisted that he already has the best player in the world at his disposal in Vinicius Jr.

This is, of course, partially manager's jargon. Ancelotti has dubbed Thibaut Courtois the greatest goalkeeper in the world (potentially true). He has also insisted that he has the remainder of the top six behind Vinicius in Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Toni Kroos.

Accurate or not, it is a coach's job to talk up the achievements of his players. While his claims about Rodrygo, Camavinga, Kroos and Valverde might be hyperbolic, Ancelotti could just have a point when it comes to Vinicius.

The Brazilian, for all of his quality, is somehow regarded as a step under the game's greats – short of the prestige saved for Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland. But on the evidence of his last three years of work – including some crucial Champions League performances that have carried this Madrid side to European silverware – he belongs only at the top.

GettyFinding his feet in Madrid

This has hardly been a simple journey for the Brazilian. For a long time, Vinicius was the talented player who couldn't quite figure it out. Thrown into the Madrid XI perhaps before he was ready, the winger made countless mistakes in key areas, and developed an unfortunate reputation for missing big chances. He drew the ire of not only Madrid fans but also his teammates, with Karim Benzema infamously discouraging Ferland Mendy from passing the ball to him for fear that he was "playing against us."

It didn't help that he came into a Madrid side that was undergoing a transition in attacking areas. The midfield trio behind him of Luka Modric, Kroos and Casemiro was long established as the best in the world. However, things were less certain in attacking areas.

Benzema was a bonafide superstar, but Madrid faced uncertainty on the wings. Eden Hazard turned out to be an expensive waste of money, while Gareth Bale's constant injuries and apparent disinterest left Los Blancos struggling in wide areas. This forced a teenage Vinicius into the starting XI, charged with carrying some of the attacking load for a Madrid side short of their best. His six goals and four assists in La Liga across his first two seasons in the Spanish capital hardly inspired confidence.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe new Galactico

But something changed with the onset of the 2021-22 campaign. Madrid were different that year, with Ancelotti returning to the helm after six seasons away. He stripped down Los Blancos' playing style, asking his creative players to operate in moments of individual inspiration, rather than follow the sort of choreographed attacking systems that have consumed European football in recent years. Benzema was at the centre of it all, the forward allowed to roam in and out of space, collecting the ball deep, while offering gaps for others.

And although Benzema scored the bulk of the goals – and claimed the Ballon d'Or that season – Vinicius was perhaps the primary beneficiary. No longer constrained to the whites of the left touchline, the Brazilian scampered all over the pitch, encouraged to take on his man or run in behind. His understanding with Benzema – the same player who once disparaged his footballing abilities, turned into something resembling telepathy.

The Brazilian's numbers made for tidy reading: 17 goals in La Liga, four in the Champions League. He threw in 16 assists in all competitions for good measure. Still just 21, Vinicius had arrived for good.

GettyConstant big goals

Perhaps the biggest moment of that season was his final act. Madrid turned in a typical Champions League performance against Liverpool in May 2022. Los Blancos spent the majority of the contest under immense pressure, and often lent on the brilliance of Courtois – who made 12 saves on the night – to stay in the game. In the end, they had just one clear chance, a well-constructed counter-attack. And Vinicius was the one who finished it.

It was his most important contribution in Madrid white to date, and started a streak of important European goals on the biggest of stages. He bagged two against Liverpool the following year at Anfield, and one against Manchester City in that year's semi-final. This season, he's only been more impactful. Vinicius tore up Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, scoring a hat-trick in a 4-1 victory. And against Bayern Munich last month, he was even better. Vinicius scored a fine goal to give Madrid the lead at the Allianz Arena, and found the net again from the penalty spot to secure a hard-fought 2-2 first-leg draw in Munich. He then backed that up by scoring the second goal in Saturday's 2-0 win over Dortmund in the final at Wembley.

Getty ImagesBecoming the main man

All of this has happened in the midst of the growth of Vinicius as a brand. He has always caught the eye with his array of tricks, flicks and cuts. Even when he was missing chances, the Brazilian was must-see TV, if only for the way in which he did it, and the highlight-reel skills that filled the gaps in between. And as his footballing quality has developed, his star power has only grown.

These days, Vinicius is a Galactico in the traditional sense. He makes playing the game look fun, and has a persona that spreads beyond the football pitch. He has an immense social media following, spends time hanging out with Neymar, and has championed countless on-and-off field causes for the game and beyond.

There is also the unfortunate way in which he has been thrust into the spotlight. It is no secret that Spanish football – and the sport in general – has a racism problem. Vinicius, unfortunately, has been at the centre of that debate. So often chided and chanted at by rival fans, the winger has been forced into the conversation as a voice against the vitriol and anti-blackness he has faced his whole career.

There is no good way for a young man, at just 23, to be able to manage that pressure. Vinicius is, after all, an elite footballer – not a full time civil rights activist. Still, he has taken on the systemic hatred in football, and become a crucial voice against the kind of abuse he, and countless other black players have been subject to. Greatness in sport goes beyond what happens on the pitch, and Vinicius – under enforced circumstances or not – has achieved it.

Blackburn "very keen" to sign forgotten Liverpool "monster" Nat Phillips

Blackburn Rovers have already enjoyed a busy January transfer window, welcoming Arnor Sigurdsson, Connor O'Riordan, Ben Chrisene and Yasin Ayari as they look to move away from the threat of Championship relegation and into the comforts of mid-table.

Blackburn transfer news

In their most recent deal, Blackburn secured a deal to sign Crewe Alexandra defender O'Riordan for an undisclosed fee. Director of Football Gregg Broughton spoke glowingly about the move, telling the club's official website: “We are delighted to welcome Connor to Blackburn Rovers and I would like congratulate Crewe for the incredible development work they have done over many years. Connor will bring an aerial presence in both boxes, a calmness in possession and a desire to do the ugly things needed to be a first-class defender.

“We have had to be patient with this signing, after initially having offers turned down by Crewe in the summer, and we have beaten significant interest from other clubs to conclude the deal.

“Our recruitment team have done a great job in both tracking Connor and then selling the club to him. Connor must also receive great credit for not allowing the speculation to affect him and being resolute that the only club he wanted to move to was Blackburn Rovers.”

Even after signing as many as four fresh faces this month, however, Jon Dahl Tomasson could be set to get at least one more through the door. According to Lewis Steele of The Daily Mail, Blackburn are "very keen" on signing Nathaniel Phillips, who recently returned to Liverpool upon the end of his loan spell at Celtic.

Those at Ewood Park aren't alone in their interest though, with Cardiff City also very keen on securing the central defender's signature before the end of the January transfer window in just one week.

"Monster" Phillips could be game-changer for Blackburn

In what has been an underwhelming season for a Blackburn side currently sat as low as 17th, they will hope to see their January arrivals make an instant difference to potentially turn their season around. If Phillips is among those arrivals too, he could be the biggest difference-maker of the lot. It will be a tough ask for the Liverpool defender, however, given that no side has conceded more goals than Blackburn's 53 in the Championship so far this season. If he can help change that, it's fair to say that he'd more than deserve his plaudits.

Liverpool defender Nat Phillips.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has never shied away from praising Phillips, who has played for the Reds in a San Siro victory over AC Milan in the Champions League, following vital games to help them qualify for the competition in the 2020/21 campaign. Speaking about the defender, Klopp previously told Match of The Day: "He's a brilliant guy, smart guy, intelligent, everything. He's not easy on the eye, he's not Messi but who cares?

"In the air, he's a monster! He was incredible. For the first game, I think everyone can imagine how nervy that must be after a long wait. It's a crazy story, three years ago he was on his way to America to college. Twelve Championship teams wanted him and to me it was clear he was going, and I was fine with that – and it didn't work out for whatever reason, and it's great! Tonight he was spot on, helped the team incredibly."

Nenhum time do tamanho do Flamengo sobrevive sem bilheteria. Precisa.

Aston Villa confident of sealing late new signing to supercharge Watkins

Unlike most sides in the Premier League, Aston Villa are using the January transfer window to strengthen their squad.

Unai Emery is keen to increase his squad selection options ahead of the rest of the season, where his side will be challenging on three fronts for glory.

Kosta Nedeljković has already been announced, but who else could be on their way to Villa Park?

The latest on Villa's pursuit of Morgan Rogers

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke for Football Insider, Villa are confident that they can sign Morgan Rogers before the transfer deadline day on 1st February.

Morgan Rogers celebrates for Middlesborough.

The Midlands club have submitted another bid for the Middlesbrough attacker after having their first two rejected.

Indeed, one source told Football Insider that scouts had been in attendance to watch the attacker in Middlesbrough’s 1-1 draw against Rotherham last weekend. Since then they have decided to ramp up their pursuit of the lively youngster. A deal could be secured before February, with Villa desperate to get their main target.

ByCharlie Smith Feb 1, 2024 How Morgan Rogers could supercharge Ollie Watkins

Under Emery, Ollie Watkins has simply been phenomenal, acting as the focal point while also working his socks off for the side.

His hard work has seemingly paid off, with the England forward picking up 14 goals and ten assists in 29 games across all competitions this season.

Even though he is almost at peak performance, for Watkins to really progress to the next level, he needs to form a telepathic relationship with the supporting striker, which is where Rogers comes into the fold.

Morgan Rogers against Aston Villa.

The Middlesbrough ace only moved to the club in the summer from Man City for as little as around £1m, but he impressed the Villa scouts during their recent clash in the FA Cup. Rogers is a versatile player who has featured mainly in the number 10 role, and in 32 games, he’s scored six and provided nine goals.

Nonetheless, the table below shows Rogers’ statistics from this season and how they compare to their positional peers in the Championship.

As you can see, Rogers is the definition of a creator, and it is no surprise that Michael Carrick has labelled his star forward as “dangerous.”

With Watkins being a striker who loves to play on the shoulder of the defender, the signing of the 21-year-old – who ranks particularly highly for progressive passes in the second tier – would allow the Villa striker to focus on that aspect of the game. Rogers can take on the responsibility of dropping deeper with ease, as shown by his passes into the final third numbers.

Furthermore, the fact that his assists, shot-creating actions, and key passes rank so highly also indicates that he would massively increase the service that Watkins will receive in and around the box, therefore increasing his chance of scoring each game.

Another way in which Rogers could improve Villa’s number 11 is by simply providing a rotation option, as he has played as a centre-forward a few times this season. Emery’s busy schedule over the next few months will inevitably see fatigue and the overplaying of some individuals occur, but giving the Spaniard the choice to rest Watkins and allow him to recharge would only make his performances better.

Overall, Rogers would be the perfect signing to improve Watkins and, most importantly, Villa. Emery must jump at the chance to pick up the attacker.

Real interest as Levy makes Tottenham approach for £34m new transfer target

Tottenham really want to sign a "world-class" new £34 million transfer target as the club's recruitment team and chairman Daniel Levy's plans take further shape.

Spurs enjoy busy January

It's already been a pretty busy month at Spurs, with the Lilywhites sealing deals for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner on loan and defender Radu Dragusin in a £25 million transfer from Genoa.

Coupled with the plethora of outgoings, as a host of Tottenham players secure loan moves away from north London, there have been widespread reports that they were also in talks to sign Club Brugge sensation Antonio Nusa on a buy-to-loan-back deal.

Brentford moved in to hijack that move and agree a deal for Nusa, but in a sensational twist, Nusa'a move to west London unceremoniously stalled after the winger failed a medical – re-opening the door for Spurs to make a potential move if they see fit.

As the Nusa saga drags on, and Spurs' head coach refuses to completely rule out more late activity, Tottenham could potentially still make a late move to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher. This is regardless of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg choosing to stay at Spurs, as confirmed by the player's own lawyer this week.

The north Londoners are also remain in planning for 2024 transfers overall, with manager Ange Postecoglou apparently keen to bolster his defence further after the signing of Dragusin. Tottenham are real admirers of Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite among others in this respect, but another player now turning heads at N17 is Eintracht Frankfurt defender Willian Pacho.

Spurs make approach to sign new target Pacho

Indeed, as per Belgian transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Spurs have made a 2024 approach to sign Pacho and are "strong" in their interest.

They've also scouted him on numerous occasions over 2023/2024, making the Ecuador international a real "one to watch" in terms of potentially joining Postecoglou this year.

Pacho, called "world-class" by manager Dino Toppmoller, has started 19 Bundesliga games as a mainstay for the German side.

Phil Salt assault launches Sussex into the ascendancy

Opener’s dashing 137 from 106 balls leaves Sussex in position from which dictate final-day terms

Sussex supporters know by now not to spend too long away from their seats when Phil Salt is going about his business; whatever the young batsman does with a bat in his hands, it tends to happen quickly. His scores coming into this game were informative. Among his 13 innings this season were seven dismissals in single figures. But there was also a 137 off 106 balls that included six sixes in a 50-over game against Kent. To that can now be added the 122 in 104 balls with which he swung this match in the favour of Sussex, decisively they will hope.He is an explosive, all-or-nothing kind of player, not unusually for someone of 22 years old in the modern game. Some coaches and captains might find him infuriating. Sussex are in no hurry to see him change and quite happy to give him his head even against the new ball in the Championship.”He might have a crazy dismissal one day then win you a game on his own the next, so as captains and coaches we have to let him play his own game,” the Sussex skipper, Ben Brown, said following Salt’s call-up to England’s T20 squad earlier this month.Until then, Salt had not been selected in an England squad of any kind, not even at Under-19 level, which is slightly odd given the meticulous work that goes into the ECB’s talent identification processes, supposedly to ensure that the progress of no qualified player goes unmonitored, and that anyone with obvious talent is exposed to some kind of international cricket as soon as possible.Salt made 355 runs in the Vitality Blast last season, which is clearly his most effective arena, but he has such a good eye that if can survive the first dozen overs or so against the red ball he can produce an innings such as this one, which had echoes of the 148 he made at Hove last August to open a pathway to victory against Derbyshire. He got away with a fair few indiscretions in this one, picking up an early boundary with a slice over the slip cordon before an inside edge off Brett Hutton just before he reached fifty came within a whisker of his off stump. When the ball came out of the meat of the bat, though, it invariably went a long way. Jamie Overton, Nathan Buck and Luke Procter took it in turns to suffer, and when stand-in captain Adam Rossington turned to Rob Keogh, Salt went after his offspin from the off, smiting him through cover and over his head for back-to-back fours before hauling the next delivery over deep midwicket for six. That one cleared the bank of seats and sailed out of the ground, coming to rest in someone’s back garden, presumably. The only bowler he wasn’t able to get away to much gain was Hutton, in the game as an unprecedented second concussion substitute after Luke Wood was unfit to resume following the helmet strike he suffered against Chris Jordan on the second evening.Salt made the unfortunate Keogh watch the ball disappear into the distance a couple more times before it all came to a predictable end just before tea when another vigorous swing of the bat against Overton sent the ball directly upwards. As he began to run, he knew even before the ball started to drop that he may as well head straight for the pavilion.”At the end of the day, if you strip it back, it is just a ball coming down at you and you have to hit it,” he said.”Obviously, in four-day cricket you have to show the bowlers more respect but I don’t see much of change in the way I approach the game in different formats, apart from that mental switch.”Sussex had not been nearly as far ahead as they had hoped when Northamptonshire’s first innings ended, largely because of Buck, who had only once before passed fifty in 122 first-class innings but showed that he actually possesses a decent repertoire of strokes, particularly square of the wicket. His partnership with Procter, most of it against the second new ball, added 70 for the ninth wicket, taking Northamptonshire past the follow-on score and on to claim a third batting point. Ben Sanderson’s late support enabled Procter even to stay around long enough to claim a fourth. It left Sussex still 54 in front, but with a need to score quickly to manoeuvre themselves into a position from which they might dictate the way the contest played out. Salt completed that part of the plan, and half-centuries in the final session from Brown and Stiann Van Zyl have given them a big enough advantage to declare overnight, or at least early in the final day, although taking 10 wickets on this pitch will be a test.
