'I was like a proud dad when we won at Headingley' – Stuart Law

Former coach warns that West Indies are fully capable of springing another surprise against England in their forthcoming series

Andrew Miller16-Jan-2019Stuart Law, West Indies’ former head coach, believes that England will be “red-hot favourites” going into next week’s first Test in Barbados, but warns that his old side are fully capable of springing another surprise, just as they produced at Headingley two years ago in one of the most sensational run-chases of all time.Law, who oversaw a steady improvement in West Indies’ Test fortunes during his two-year spell in the Caribbean, stepped down from his role in September to take up the vacancy as Middlesex’s head coach. And, while being realistic about West Indies’ hopes of resisting an England team that secured an impressive 3-0 win in Sri Lanka before Christmas, Law was adamant that the players he’s left behind have sufficient skill, experience and determination to rise to their latest challenge.”Don’t underestimate the home team,” Law said. “There’s a core group of senior players who’ve been there for a while and proved that they can do it. If England aren’t on their game, West Indies have the team to make an upset.”England are going in as red-hot favourites but as the underdogs, West Indies have nothing to lose. They aren’t supposed to win, and the Caribbean crowd will tell them they are not supposed to win, and they like proving people wrong as well.”Despite being the stronger team on paper for the best part of two decades, England’s recent record against West Indies leaves plenty to be desired, not least in the Caribbean, where they have not won a series since 2004 and where they lost their most recent Test – coincidentally in Barbados – back in 2015.However, for sheer chutzpah, few results in recent times compare with West Indies’ incredible Headingley upset on the 2017 tour, when Shai Hope – with two hundreds in the match – and Kraigg Brathwaite – with 134 and 95 – helped square the series with one to play after a daunting run-chase of 322.”I think the euphoria of that first Test win in England in 17 years was something that is still being celebrated in the Caribbean,” Law said. “They don’t need much to have a party out there.Miguel Cummins and West Indies coach Stuart Law look on after having a chat in between overs•Getty Images

“Some of the kids who stuck their hand up in that match are still involved now… Hope, Brathwaite, Jason Holder, Shannon Gabriel, those guys played their hearts out. Gabriel bowled fast every time he bowled the ball, and the two batters had a dream Test match.”They can do it, that’s the thing. It comes down to self-belief. If they’ve got self-belief they can achieve anything.”Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of that Headingley win was its context. It came only days after England had crushed the same set of players by an innings and 209 runs in a bitterly one-sided first Test.”To come back after Edgbaston in that way, I’d have to say it was the best Test performance I’ve been involved with,” Law said. “The enormity after what happened … you’re like a proud dad, watching the kids have a red-hot dip and all of a sudden they start to play cricket you can only dream of playing.”Not that Law would claim much of the credit for the turnaround, however.”I didn’t have to say much,” he said. “We sat down in the dressing room on [what should have been] day five, and the players just had a meeting. We were there as coaches to facilitate and prompt here and there, but they did all the talking.”They didn’t like it. They got abuse from back home – you should have read some of the social media abuse, and that was coming from their home crowd. It was tough for them, but I didn’t have to say too much. It was about pointing them in the right direction and saying you can go one of two ways. You can fall away and lose the series 3-0, or you can stand up and fight. What do you want to do?”They came up with what they wanted to do, and gave a very honest account of where they were at during that Test match. And once you’ve had that conversation, you are accountable for what you do going forward. They were all accountable at Headingley, and they stuck their hands up.”Stuart Law speaks at his Middlesex unveiling•Getty Images

West Indies’ hopes in the coming series have been boosted by the recall of Darren Bravo, a proven Test-match batsman who played a crucial hand in that Barbados win in 2015. He had been unavailable for most of Law’s spell in the Caribbean after becoming embroiled in the stand-off with CWI over player availability for T20 leagues. However, his return to the fray, says Law, is a sign of progress.”I think there’s been massive improvements,” he said. “Johnny Grave, the CEO, and Jimmy Adams, the director of cricket, have made massive strides to raise the professionalism.”But you can’t rush these disputes. I didn’t really understand the depths, but at times you have to side with the players. I had brief conversations with Darren and he made some very good points.”He’s a high-class player, West Indies could do with his experience, and you’d like to see commitment from other players as well. But the T20 riches are big, and the West Iindies boys are high in demand, so you can’t blame them, even if playing for West Indies is a shop window for these tournaments.”I didn’t blame one player once for choosing T20 cricket over Test cricket. Sure, I was disappointed, as I’d have loved to have them playing for West Indies, but they had other issues to keep to, and supporting their families was one of them.”In fact, supporting his own family was Law’s primary reason for calling an early end to his time with West Indies, and instead seeking out the security that comes with a four-year deal at Middlesex.”I’ve been asked to improve Middlesex’s white-ball cricket which has not been as competitive as it should be for a while so that will be a big focus,” he said. “But not at the expense of the Championship.”We’ve essentially still got the core of a group of players who won the County Championship a couple of years ago so we know they are capable of winning games and getting us back into the first division.”

Tottenham preparing bid for "simply superb" forward, he’s tempted to move

Tottenham have reportedly been boosted in their efforts to complete the signing of a "superb" player, with a move away from his current club appealing to him and a bid potentially being tabled for his services.

Tottenham transfer news

Spurs have managed to steady the ship after suffering a dispiriting run of form, winning their last two Premier League games, including away to Nottingham Forest on Friday evening. There is a feeling that a top-four finish is once again possible, even though Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester City currently occupy those positions, but new signings could ultimately make all the difference in that respect.

One report has claimed that Feyenoord attacking Santiago Gimenez is a target for Tottenham, as they look to bring in more reinforcements in the final third, in order to provide competition for the likes of Son Heung-min, Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace and England centre-back Marc Guehi continues to stand out as possible centre-back option, with Spurs thought to be battling Manchester United for his signing, showing that Ange Postecoglou is targeting players at both ends of the pitch.

While planning for the current is important for Postecoglou, it is also essential that Spurs continue to look towards the future as well, and it looks as though they are eyeing a move for an exciting young player.

Tottenham receive Samuel Iling-Junior boost

According to TV Play [via Sport Witness], Tottenham have received a boost in their quest to sign Samuel Iling-Junior, who is currently plying his trade at Juventus.

Juventus forwardSamuel Iling-Junior.

The 20-year-old is reportedly "attracted by the idea of changing air soon", with a "new adventure elsewhere" looking increasingly possible. In fact, Spurs are "considering making an official bid" for him, and Juve could get "get more than €20m (£17.2m)" for him. Iling-Junior could be a great long-term acquisition by the north Londoners, despite the 20-year-old struggling to make his mark in a Juventus shirt currently.

ByMatt Dawson Dec 18, 2023

In fact, Iling-Junior has only made six appearances in Serie A this season, all of which have come from the substitutes' bench, and a return to England could be best for his development.

There is no denying his talent as a player, with football talent scout Jacek Kulig calling him "simply superb" last year, at which point he was impressing for Juve after arriving from Chelsea back in 2020. He has a tally of 35 caps to his name for England at youth team level, too, which goes to show what a highly-rated prospect he has been for a number of years now.

While Iling-Junior wouldn't be arriving at Tottenham as a key man, making an immediate difference in the top-four battle in the Premier League, he is someone with the ability to mature into a top-class winger, eventually becoming an established part of Postecoglou's plans in north London.

Farke must finally unleash 5 ft 11 Leeds "threat" alongside Rutter

Leeds United will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways this afternoon as they take on Coventry City in the Championship at Elland Road.

The Whites were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland on Tuesday night, which was their first defeat since October, and they now come up against the 14th best side in the division as it stands.

Daniel Farke's team are third and ten points adrift of the automatic promotion places heading into today's clash as they look to put pressure on the current top two.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

Ahead of the match, the German tactician confirmed that he will have the same squad to select from that he had against the Black Cats.

With this in mind, Farke must finally unleash Mateo Joseph from the start in place of Joel Piroe to partner Georgino Rutter at the top end of the pitch.

Joel Piroe's performance against Sunderland in numbers

The former Swansea centre-forward lined up in the number ten position and failed to impose himself on the game throughout his 90 minutes on the pitch.

Piroe only had 28 touches of the ball, despite playing the full match, and that was the second-fewest of any of the Leeds starters – only Dan James (21) had fewer and the Wales international only played 75 minutes.

With those touches, the Dutch marksman did not create a single chance for his teammates and, of course, did not find the back of the net as the Whites lost 1-0.

Leeds forward Joel Piroe.

The 24-year-old finisher has started all 21 Championship matches for Swansea and Leeds combined this season and his lacklustre display on Tuesday was, perhaps, a sign that fatigue is setting in.

Therefore, this clash with Coventry could be the right time for him to be rested, which would then open the door for Joseph to walk into the team.

The statistics that show why Joseph should be unleashed

The 20-year-old ace has come off the bench in the last two matches – his first league appearances of the season – and Farke must finally unleash him for his first start.

Joseph has yet to burst onto the scene for the first-team but his sublime form for the club's U21 side since the start of the 2022/23 campaign suggests that the potential is there for him to do just that.

The England U20 international has plundered 17 goals and three assists in 23 Premier League 2 regular season and play-off matches over the last 18 months or so.

Leeds forward Mateo Joseph.

This means that the 5 foot 11 prospect, who was once hailed as "fantastic" and a "threat" for opposition defences by ex-boss Michael Skubala, averaged a goal every 1.35 games at that level and has the scope to be a terrific scorer for Leeds if he can translate that to the first-team.

Now just imagine what he could do alongside a player who can create chances for him at an impressive rate, which is exactly what Rutter can do.

The French wizard currently ranks among the top 1% of Championship forwards this season for Expected Assisted Goals (0.41), assists (0.44), and shot-creating actions (4.30) per 90.

Rutter, who has created 16 'big chances' in 19 league starts, has the quality to split open defences with sublime regularity and is one of the best, if not the best, in the division – as shown by the aforementioned statistics – in that respect.

He could, therefore, be a fantastic player for Joseph to make his first Championship start of the season alongside as the 21-year-old talent could provide the youngster with the service he needs in front of goal.

Newcastle back in to sign "incredible" player for Howe in £50m+ transfer

Newcastle United could be back in to sign an "incredible" player with a huge future in the game, according to a new transfer update.

Newcastle eyeing new defender

Everything seemed to go so smoothly for Eddie Howe throughout last season, with few injuries on show allowing him to play a settled side most weeks, leading to an eventual fourth-place finish in the Premier League.

The 2023/24 campaign has been a disaster in the fitness department, however, with Newcastle deprived of the services of so many important players, including midfield favourite Bruno Guimareas, and strike duo Callum Willson and Alexander Isak. Sandro Tonali's 10-month ban has only made things worse, too.

Defensively, the absence of the influential Sven Botman for plenty of games has also been a major setback – the Magpies leader has only started five league games this season – and it could mean that the club look to sign another centre-back in the January transfer window.

A recent report has claimed that Newcastle are keen on signing young Le Havre central defender Arouna Sangante, and they have now been backed to snap up a similarly highly-rated young player.

Newcastle back in for Goncalo Inacio

According to a new claim from CNN Portugal [via Sport Witness], Newcastle are interested in signing Sporting CP ace Goncalo Inacio in January, in what represents a twist after reports last month claimed the Magpies were walking away from a deal.

That being said, his current club are not entertaining the idea of allowing one of their most prized assets to leave midway through the season, such is his importance at the heart of the defence.

Inacio does have a €60m (£52.1m) release clause in his contract, however, so Newcastle know that they could get their man if they are willing to stump up that amount of money. The report mentions that pundit Diogo Luis believes a move to St James' Park would be a "good solution" for the Portuguese.

The 22-year-old looks like a special prospect who could mature into one of the best defenders in Europe one day – journalist Moby Haque has called him "incredible" in the past for his passing – even though it is never easy to predict the career trajectory of an exciting young player.

Age is only a number, though, and the maturity that Inacio is performing with currently belies his years, with the Newcastle transfer target already racking up 139 appearances for Sporting since breaking into the first team, also chipping in with 11 goals and eight assists.

Cost

Alexander Isak

£60.8m

Sandro Tonali

£55.6m

Anthony Gordon

£39.6m

Harvey Barnes

£38.2m

£38.2m

The fact that the four-time capped Portugal international can also play at left-back means that he could bring versatility to Howe's squad, not only acting as competition for Botman, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles in central areas, but also the injured Dan Burn at full-back.

While spending over £50m on any player is a lot of money, Inacio's long-term potential could actually end up making him a bargain signing, and the money could be there to spend on new signings, given the wealth of the PIF owners and the injection of funds after qualifying for the Champions League last season.

Leeds could land Bamford upgrade in swoop for 6 ft 1 Rutter partner

The January transfer window is just around the corner and Leeds United may dip into the market to bolster their playing squad next month.

Daniel Farke is reportedly looking to add to his forward options as the Whites continue to battle for an instant return to the Premier League by winning promotion out of the Championship.

It was recently reported that the Whites and Italian side Salernitana are both interested in a possible swoop to sign Haugesund forward Sory Ibrahim Diarra.

The Yorkshire-based outfit could land an upgrade on Patrick Bamford and an exciting partner for Georgino Rutter if they are able to win the race for his signature ahead of the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.

Bamford's season in numbers

So far this season, the former England international has made 12 appearances as a substitute and is yet to contribute with a goal or an assist.

He has racked up 1.53 xG (Expected Goals) but has failed to find the back of the net on any occasion. The 30-year-old has not provided any threat at the top end of the pitch.

mateo-joseph-patrick-bamford-leeds-opinion

This has come off the back of his return of four goals from 8.61 xG across 28 Premier League appearances for Leeds during the 2022/23 campaign.

These statistics show that the English attacker has significantly underperformed in front of goal since the start of last season, which is why Farke may look to replace him in January.

The statistics that show why Leeds should sign Diarra

The 23-year-old ace, Diarra, could come in as an upgrade on Bamford if he is able to translate his form over the last few years over to English football.

Throughout 2023, the 6 foot 1 marksman has produced eight goals and three 'big chances' created for his team in 25 Eliteserien appearances. He has also managed one goal and two assists in three cup matches for the Norwegian side this year.

Diarra arrived in Norway from Romanian side Petrolul, where the talented youngster racked up 16 goals and five assists in 29 matches. This included 15 goals and five assists in 22 outings during the 2021/22 campaign.

These statistics show that the Haugesund marksman has been in fine form in front of goal in recent seasons, whereas Bamford has consistently underperformed in the final third for the Whites.

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

Diarra could thrive alongside Rutter at the top end of the pitch at Elland Road as the French whiz is a sublime creator who could provide the forward with the chances he needs to score.

The 21-year-old magician has created a staggering 16 'big chances' and assisted eight goals in 19 Championship starts for Leeds so far this season.

He ranks within the top 1% of forwards in the division for assists (0.44), Expected Assisted Goals (0.41), and shot-creating actions (4.30) per 90 this season.

Farke has unearthed his own Ousmane Dembele in "unplayable" Leeds ace

The talented youngster has hit the ground running at Championship level this season.

ByDan Emery Nov 28, 2023

These statistics show that the ex-Hoffenheim gem is one of the best, if not the best, creative talents in the Championship due to his ability to consistently unlock opposition defenders with his incisive play.

Therefore, Rutter could be the perfect player to help Diarra hit the ground running as he has the quality to put chances on a plate for the Mali-born finisher to carry his impressive goalscoring form over to England to become Farke's much-needed Bamford upgrade.

Rejuvenated Miller in 'good space' after downtime

South Africa’s finisher had modest returns in the side’s ODI series win over Pakistan, but he insists he is feeling “really good” after a break over the new year

Liam Brickhill in Cape Town31-Jan-2019David Miller endured what were, by his standards, modest returns in the midst of South Africa’s 3-2 ODI series win over Pakistan. Miller only gave glimpses of the striking power he is capable of with scores of 16*, 31 and 4, but he insisted that he is feeling “really good” after a refreshing break over the new year. With the inaugural Mzansi Super League running straight on from South Africa’s limited-overs tour of Australia, there was no downtime towards the end of the year and Miller admitted feeling “a little bit rundown” before a three-week break while South Africa switched to the longest format with three Tests against Pakistan.”I feel really good, to be honest,” Miller said. “I had three weeks off. I was in the gym quite a bit, ran a bit, and enjoyed my time off. I think mentally I was a little bit rundown towards the end of last year, but I had a good break and I feel it did me good. I’ve been training really hard, and I feel in a good space with my game. And there’s a lot of cricket ahead, so I needed a bit of a break.”Miller was left out of South Africa’s XI for the series decider at Newlands on Wednesday, with the coach and selectors instead opting to field test all three of their all-round options in Wiaan Mulder, Andile Phehlukwayo and Chris Morris. The rotation continued the pattern of experimentation in South Africa’s white-ball cricket of late as coach Ottis Gibson and Faf du Plessis explore their options with an eye on the World Cup.”It is quite challenging at times, but I think as a player you’ve got to deal with something like that,” Miller said. “We’ve all committed to the bigger cause. We all want to win the World Cup as a country. If the selectors or coach or captain want to try out different guys, you’ve got to accept the decisions. That’s something we’ve all committed to as a team. There’s definitely a bigger picture. It’s nice to have refreshed players as well. It doesn’t allow mediocrity within the squad. You’ve constantly got to be on your A game.”While his scores in the ODIs against Pakistan haven’t been great, it is only four innings ago that Miller smashed a 108-ball 139 to help set up South Africa’s away series win over Australia. On a record-breaking day, Miller shared a 252-run stand with his captain du Plessis – the highest ever conceded by Australia in ODIs.”All those kinds of performances go down as experience,” Miller said of his ton. “At the end of the day, the next game is just as important. It’s really nice to have had that, but it has come and gone.”While Miller’s focus is forward-facing, the make-up of the T20 squad he is part of also points towards South Africa’s future. He will be one of the senior players in a new-look squad for the T20s against Pakistan, and suggested that for the new faces in the team the upcoming games could represent both a shot at World Cup glory and an opportunity for further franchise T20 opportunities.”It’s a different format, but every format you play for South Africa you do have an opportunity if you really excel to put up your hand in that sense,” he said. “It is around to the corner to the World Cup, so I don’t see why not, if someone does extremely well. Saying that, there have been a lot of guys getting chances over the last 18 months. It’s definitely a good stepping stone for the World Cup.”T20, globally, there’s a lot of contracts around the world now. So as a youngster, if you do well in the international arena, it gives you the opportunity for other formats in South Africa, but also abroad as well. It creates a lot of opportunity.”As well as being a senior member of South Africa’s white-ball set-up, Miller is also positioned in the middle order as the team’s finisher. It’s a role that has moulded virtually his entire career, and one that he has grown very comfortable with.”It’s pretty much been my career,” he said of the ‘finisher’ role. “You mould yourself around that and you’ve got to make it happen. That’s something that I’ve been working on. You don’t get it right every time, but that’s the aim – to practice with the intention of finishing a game. Wanting those moments. That’s been my role for many, many years and I take it onboard.”

West Ham "serious" about signing "constant threat" Antonio alternative

West Ham are growing more and more serious about signing an alternative to Michail Antonio in January, and he's been called a "constant threat".

Hammers set sights on forward signing

The January transfer window represents a real opportunity for David Moyes to shore up a key area of the squad. West Ham's glaring lack of depth in the striker position has really been highlighted by injuries to Jarrod Bowen and Antonio, were are both sidelined after knocks on international duty.

Bowen had been used as a makeshift forward before his absence, while Antonio remains Moyes' preferred number nine option when available.

In a 2-1 win over Burnley at Turf Moor, Moyes was forced to start out-of-favour striker Danny Ings in the absence of Bowen and Antonio, with the Englishman failing to make an impact.

Young striker Divin Mubama came off the bench to play a heavy hand in West Ham clinching a late three points against Burnley, but it's clear these options won't be enough if Moyes wants to make a success of what could be his last season in charge.

Technical director Tim Steidten has prioritised the signing of a striker at West Ham this January as a result, with club insider ExWHUemployee revealing it is his main focus right now.

Tim Steidten’s role at the club has grown in seniority since his arrival,” stated Ex on Patreon (via West Ham Way).

“His knowledge, targets and dealings have really impressed Sullivan, who now fully trusts Tim as his right-hand-man. This will almost certainly mean that Steidten will be leading the search for our next manager in the future. However, its understood his main focus for now is player contracts and January recruitment – with a striker top of the list.”

West Ham "serious" about signing Werner

One name on West Ham's agenda is RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner. The German has been linked with a London Stadium move in recent weeks, and TEAMtalk have an update on the situation.

They claim West Ham's interest in Werner is "serious", and their recruitment staff are ready to thoroughly explore the possibility of a deal should he leave Leipzig. However, one roadblock could be that he'll take some convincing to make a Premier League return, especially given his nightmare stint at London neighbours Chelsea.

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner celebrates scoring a goal.

Despite not exactly standing out as a prolific marksman since returning to Leipzig, Werner has been called a "constant threat" by members of the media like pundit Kevin Campbell. Commenting on the £200,000-per-week attacker during his time at Chelsea, Campbell told Football Insider:

“Werner is a very good player. The problem is, I think he needs a change. He needs to get out of that spotlight. He needs to go somewhere else.

“It may all turnaround and click for him once he does that. The spotlight at Chelsea might be too much for him. He gets into unbelievable positions. His movement and speed are a constant threat.

“The thing is, he just hasn’t been scoring the goals. His finishing has not taken off at Chelsea.”
