Allrounder James Neesham and fast bowler Doug Bracewell are back in New Zealand’s ODI squad after a gap of more than a year. They have both found places in the squad for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, which begins on January 3 in Mount Maunganui. Also in the squad is wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert, who is set to make his ODI debut with the regular keeper Tom Latham rested. Also rested is the allrounder Colin de Grandhomme.Neesham has not played an international of any description for almost 18 months, but has earned a recall on the back of excellent domestic form. His batting was especially instrumental to Wellington Firebirds’ run to the Ford Trophy List A title over the last two months, as he scored 503 runs at an average of 63.87 and a strike rate of 111. He also claimed 13 wickets in the tournament.Bracewell, meanwhile, who last played for New Zealand in January this year, returns to the side on the back of strong performances for New Zealand A against India A in October and November. It was in the unofficial Tests – rather than the List A games – in which Bracewell impressed, however, taking eight wickets at 28.75, in addition to producing two solid innings with the bat.”Doug and Jimmy have performed well on the domestic scene and showed during the recent New Zealand A series against India A that they’re ready for international cricket,” selector Gavin Larsen said. Also part of that A team series had been Northern Districts wicketkeeper batsman Seifert, who made 123 runs at 42.66 across three innings in the unofficial ODI series. He has played seven T20Is, and is almost certain to make his ODI debut against Sri Lanka with no other wicketkeeper-batsman named in the squad. “Tim’s also been rewarded for his strong New Zealand A form and we’ve been impressed by the development of his all-round game,” Larsen said.In general, New Zealand would like to use the Sri Lanka series as a testing ground for World Cup prospects, Larsen said. “We want to win the one-day series against Sri Lanka, and we want to gain as much new information as possible while doing so.”Perhaps the most notable omission from the squad is left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel, who was in New Zealand’s ODI squad for the recent tour of the UAE, though he did not play a 50-over game. Legspinner Ish Sodhi is the frontline slow bowler in the squad.Mitchell Santner, meanwhile, recently returned to action in the Super Smash after nine months out with a knee injury. The spin-bowling allrounder could be back in the reckoning soon, Larsen indicated: “Mitchell made a promising return in the Burger King Super Smash over the weekend and we’ll continue to monitor his progress closely.”New Zealand ODI squad: Kane Williamson (capt), Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Colin Munro, James Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Tim Seifert (wk), Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor
Having retired from international cricket in 2012, the former Zimbabwe captain and their convener of selectors has signed for a Sri Lankan domestic side for the forthcoming first-class season

Tatenda Taibu, the former Zimbabwe captain and their convener of selectors until March this year, is set to return to competitive cricket, six years after retiring from international cricket. He has signed for Sri Lankan domestic side Baduraliya CC for the forthcoming first-class season, he confirmed to ESPNcricinfo, in response to an advertisement for an overseas player.Taibu, the youngest ever Test captain, played 28 Tests and 150 ODIs for Zimbabwe before calling time on an 11-year-long international career in 2012 at age 29, stating that he wanted to focus on working for the church. One of Taibu’s motivations behind his return to professional cricket was that his son had never seen him play the game.”My son Tatenda Jr also often asks how I used to play, now that he has taken a liking to the sport,” Taibu said. “He didn’t really get the chance to see me as he was too young at the time. I have stayed extremely fit and healthy and feel I’m still one of the fittest cricketers around, so I thought maybe I can let him see for himself how I can perform.”Since his international retirement, Taibu had been living in the UK, where, in 2016, he returned to cricket after signing for Liverpool and District team Hightown St Mary’s. He made his first foray into administration the same year, as Zimbabwe Cricket’s convener of selectors and development officer.During his time in the UK, he also founded the Harare-based Rising Stars Academy, which received funding from Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) and private sponsors, and the academy collaborated with an English sports agency and secured club contracts for players picked as among Zimbabwe’s most promising.Earlier this year, Taibu was sacked as ZC’s chief selector, along with coach Heath Streak and captain Graeme Cremer, in the aftermath of Zimbabwe’s failed 2019 World Cup qualifying campaign. Taibu later criticised ZC for its treatment of players and said he believed that part of the reason he was sacked was because, “I said all the things I should have said while I was in the organisation. That’s why I was ousted.”
One Tottenham starlet is "ready to emerge" as a key player as manager Ange Postecoglou makes it "clear" how important he is to the Spurs cause.
Tottenham vs West Ham
The second in a very difficult triple-header of Lilywhites fixtures commences this evening, as Postecoglou's side face off against London rivals West Ham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs planning January bid for "high energy" star who's "leaving" his club
They’re studying an offer for next month.
ByEmilio Galantini Dec 7, 2023
Spurs sealed a dramatic 3-3 draw in their last game against champions Man City, courtesy of a late 90th-minute equaliser from Dejan Kulusevski, but there's barely any time for them to rest with the Hammers set to present a tough test.
Tottenham are also still minus a few key players who aren't expected back until 2024, like James Maddison and Micky van de Ven, but one huge boost is the return of defender Cristian Romero.
The Argentine looks set to partner either one of Ben Davies or Emerson Royal at the heart of Tottenham's back four, and it's highly likely we'll see a similar attacking line-up to the one which took on City at the Etihad.
"Cristian is available," said Postecoglou on the latest Spurs team news (via football.london).
"Nothing the other night in terms of disrupting this preparation. From the guys out, Pape is back training. Probably tomorrow will be a bit too soon for him but Sunday I'm pretty sure he'll be available. Richy got five mins other day and felt short physically but in terms of where he is he's available. All the rest I don't expect to see back for a while."
The likes of Brennan Johnson and Bryan Gil have impressed since being handed the nod in wake of Tottenham's injury issues, and the latter turned a few heads with his showing against City after overcoming his own fitness problems.
Gil made only his second start of the Premier League campaign at Eastlands, and after a few loan spells at Valencia and Sevilla since joining in 2021, the Spaniard will be eager to finally showcase his potential in a Spurs shirt.
Postecoglou has made "clear" Gil's importance

As per reports out of Spain, Tottenham head coach Postecoglou has made "clear" Gil's importance with the 22-year-old starlet now "ready to emerge" as a key player.
Postecoglou has also praised the attacker's determination and commitment, with the Australian believing he has all the necessary potential to become a success at Spurs. It will be very interesting to see if Gil establishes himself as a regular starter, especially amid Richarlison's steady recovery.

Gets fouled often
Likes to play short passes
Likes to tackle
Commits fouls often
The Brazilian was handed his first league minutes since pubic bone surgery against City on Sunday, but Postecoglou's admission that he still feels short physically could hand Gil an opportunity to move ahead of him in the pecking order with assured performances. And this continues with West Ham tonight.

Herons flopped in Champions Cup clash
Need to be more than flat-track bullies
WHAT HAPPENED?
The mercurial Argentine was back to his best for the Herons as they claimed a dramatic 3-2 victory over Sporting KC in front of more than 72,000 spectators at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. That performance earned him Matchday MVP recognition, but came on the back of a disappointing display in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Inter Miami tumbled out of that competition at the hands of Mexican outfit Monterrey, with Messi unable to inspire them in a 5-2 aggregate defeat. Former MLS and USMNT star Herculez Gomez was impressed with the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner as he put on a clinic in Kansas, but has suggested that he fluffed his lines in a game with more riding on it.
WHAT GOMEZ SAID ABOUT MESSI
Gomez has told of seeing Messi star at the home of Super Bowl-winning NFL franchise the Kansas City Chiefs: “It’s three days too late. We see Messi and friends play in MLS and they look like the Harlem Globetrotters. Guess what the opposition looks like then? The Washington Generals. You go from playing against Rayados [Monterrey] who in CONCACAF is star-studded in their house where the fans were hostile, and I thought we were going to see the angry Messi and for him to show up, but he sure did in this game [vs Sporting KC]. We got prime Barcelona Messi, but my initial reaction? Three days too late.”

WHAT NEXT FOR MESSI?
Victory in Kansas has taken Inter Miami back to the top of the MLS Eastern Conference and they will return to domestic action on Saturday when playing host to Nashville – with Messi seemingly fully recovered from the hamstring injury that was holding him back early on in the 2024 campaign.
Faça a simulação!
A gente tem Sport, Atlético-GO, Goiás, Fluminense, o próprio Ceará. Então a gente tem uma tabela favorecendo.Eu ainda acredito na Série A, e isso eu falo para os jogadores toda vez que eu vou lá. E eu conto com todos eles – afirmou.
O Botafogo encara o Atlético-GO nesta quarta-feira, às 17h, no Nilton Santos.

Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange is reportedly a busy man behind-the-scenes as another new January target comes to light this week.
Spurs continuing new defender chase
Lilywhites head coach Ange Postecoglou got most of his transfer wishes in the summer window, but one key task Spurs failed to complete was the addition of a second left-footed central defender.
After the signing of Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg, the north Londoners wanted to add an alternative option, leading to a deadline day swoop for Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly. A move for the Cherries star failed to materialise, though, leaving Postecoglou with just van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ashley Phillips as their natural centre-back options.
alfie-dorrington-eric-dier-tottenham-opinion
Following van de Ven's serious hamstring injury, which is set to keep him out till 2024, Spurs may be ruing the decision not to bring in another defender over the summer. As a result, it's been reported that Lange is in the market for a new centre-back this winter, leading to claims that Spurs could go back in for Kelly among other options.
Tottenham centre-back targets
Fellow names to have appeared on Tottenham's list of January targets include Uruguay defender Sebastian Caceres, Everton's Ben Godfrey, Crystal Palace ace Marc Guehi, Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah, Genoa star Radu Dragusin, Union Saint-Gilloise's Koki Machida and Benfica starlet Morato.
All appear to possess the qualities to succeed in Postecoglou's aggressive high line at Tottenham, with the likes of Godfrey and Kelly being revered for their pace.
Options from the Premier League could be pretty enticing for Spurs, as experience in Europe's most prestigious and competitive division will be a major bonus.
Spurs could move for Branthwaite
Now, according to The Daily Mail, Tottenham could move for Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite after his exceptional start to the campaign at Goodison Park.
Indeed, Branthwaite has become a target for Spurs, who could now be on the January wishlist. As per The Mail, Sean Dyche's young defensive starlet has been a "revelation" so far.
The Toffees boss recently showered Branthwaite with praise, saying the 21-year-old is working hard to improve all facets of his game behind the scenes. Dyche said to Sky Sports:
"He is working hard at his game. He is listening. He has been very open-minded and is enjoying his football."
Called "quality" by former Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti, Branthwaite has had to be patient for his chances on Merseyside, but time on loan at Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven last season appears to have taken him up a gear.
The Englishman played 27 Dutch top-flight matches as a mainstay in former PSV manager Ruud van Nistelrooy's starting eleven (Branthwaite stats – WhoScored).
Now, he is a fixture of Dyche's Everton eleven as well, with van Nistelrooy calling him a "very complete" defender during the player's loan spell last term.
“He is a great talent," said van Nistelrooy.
"The boy is 20, but he has a future. He is good on the ball, can play on the left or the right of centre-back because he is two-footed. He has height and speed, so he is very complete.”
Moin Khan Because he was such a big player and in awesome form at the time, we were all pretty sure that Sachin was going to win the game for them. But as soon as we got him out, it became obvious to us that we would win – in those days India’s reliance on him was much greater than it is now. After Sachin was out, we had a meeting where Akram led the way, telling everyone that one final effort was all that was needed and that the match was ours. Yes, when we got him out the target was still very gettable – 17 runs with three wickets in hand – but Saqlain Mushtaq was bowling so well at the time. He was ideal, really, because he was very tight, but aggressive as well. Because of that we were always confident. The biggest boost was the spirit that we got from Sachin’s dismissal. After every over, Wasim would have a team meeting and really inspire everyone. The fielders became really focused and involved in the game. All the close-in fielders really applied the pressure as well, always having a chirp, you know: “You’ll never get the runs, no matter what you do,” or words to that effect.Javagal Srinath’s wicket – the last one – when he played a defensive shot and the ball spun back to dislodge the bail, sparked off the most amazing emotions, of course. I had missed stumping Sachin a little earlier off Saqlain, so it was a big relief for me as well.Sunil Joshi Sachin and I had shared a good partnership and were getting close to the target. Sachin was experiencing acute pain and I told him to just stay in while I went for the big hits. But he decided it would be better if he went for the shots. He smashed two successive fours off Saqlain before attempting another big hit and getting out.The ball was reversing quite a bit by then and I was standing outside leg stump while facing Wasim. Even so, it was nearly impossible to handle the swing.Anil Kumble was out to Wasim soon and I knew then that it was up to me. I decided to go after Saqlain and with only one fielder inside the circle and two balls left in the over, I tried to push a single and retain the strike. But my bat got stuck in my pads and I lobbed a simple return catch back to the bowler. The tension was just too much and Saqlain made it tougher for us by racing through his overs and not allowing us to take a breather. It was a combination of panicky batting and fantastic bowling that decided the game.
Farhad Reza does the star turn with the ball against Khulna with his maiden T20 four-for
The Report by Mohammad Isam22-Jan-2019How the game played outRangpur Riders picked up the pace in their Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) campaign with a six-wicket win over Khulna Titans. Chasing 182 for victory, Rangpur had Alex Hales giving them a sound start with a quick 55, while his opening partner Chris Gayle ensured there was no wobble during the middle overs.Rilee Rossouw’s six over midwicket off Yasir Shah with three balls remaining completed Rangpur’s win.Najmul Hossain Shanto had earlier held the Khulna innings together with 48 off 35 balls, with three sixes, before David Wiese hammered an unbeaten 15-ball 35 towards the close. Farhad Reza, playing his 88th T20 game, finished with his first four-wicket haul in the format.Turning points David Wiese smashed two sixes and three fours in the last two overs in which Khulna got 30 runs, lifting them from a modest 151 for 5 to 181 for 6. Hales and Gayle added 78 runs in 7.4 overs for the first wicket, giving Rangpur the perfect start in a steep chase. Khulna were still in the contest after 16 overs with Rangpur needing a further 42 runs, but Gayle settled his team’s nerves with three sixes in the 17th over. Star of the day It was only a matter of time before Gayle got going in the tournament, and he chose a good time to shoulder the responsibility. He took a backseat as Hales and AB de Villiers swung it around, and only brought out his own big-hitting when things got tight. The big missWith six runs required off the last over, Mohammad Mithun went down the track to Yasir Shah but missed the delivery to put Rangpur in some bother. However, Rossouw got them across the line.Where the teams stand Rangpur moved up to third place after their fourth win in eight games; Khulna haven’t added to their solitary win in the competition.
