Is it Promotion or Bust – For Cardiff City?

Cardiff City supporters have been left reeling by the latest set of financial accounts published by their club, for the year ending May 31, 2012. The accounts recorded losses of £13,605,000 – bringing their overall debt to just over 83 million pounds!

The figures however showed that the club has made a significant increase in turnover, from £15,947,000 to £20,216,000 during that period, this was largely due to an appearance in the Carling Cup final which contributed almost £2.3m to turnover for the year. Along with an increase in the uptake of season tickets for the then forthcoming 2012/13 season in order for fans to secure tickets for the said Carling Cup final together with a marked upturn in the sale of replica shirts and memorabilia for the same reason.

The club ironically offered an amnesty to supporters – an offer of a half price Cardiff City first team shirt for any Liverpool FC replica shirt taken into the club shop in the run up to the Carling Cup final, (there being a large number of Welsh based Liverpool supporters who it was feared would go to Wembley amongst the City supporters – aware there was no tangible way to prevent them from doing so) the aim was to ensure the Cardiff City section of Wembley did at least appear all Blue.

However that increase in turnover was quickly eaten up by rising administrative costs, interest on loans to the club and approximately £1.6m which was paid out to Dave Jones and his backroom staff after they were sacked following a failed bid to win promotion in 2010/2011, and money paid to Malky Mackay’s former club Watford for his release.

The biggest shock that came out of the release of the Cardiff City accounts was new to the vast majority of people, that Langston are due a one-off payment of £5m if the debt to them remains outstanding by the time City win promotion to the Premier League. That debt to Langston, the company represented by former Bluebirds owner Sam Hammam, now stands at £19,259,000 repayable by 2016 due to interest.

Overall, Cardiff City Football Club (Holdings) Limited – the umbrella company which incorporates the football club – owes £51,920,000 to creditors in the next 12 months and £31,175,000 to creditors after that period. Encapsulated within the £51m owed over the next year, is £37,431,000 money owed to Malaysian backer Vincent Tan, who is yet to turn the monies he has ploughed into Cardiff City football club into equity as was previously promised, which would if converted would make him the major share holder/owner and not backer of the club and wipe that sum immediately from the clubs books.

Elsewhere, the wage bill in 2012 was up to £18.5m from £13.9m the previous year. With worse to come for this season 2012/2013 aside from a further increase in the wage bill due to the signings made to strengthen and improve The Bluebirds squad in an attempt to secure Premiership football at last.

There will also be the transfer fees for the said players, players such as;  Nicky Maynard, Craig Noone, Jordon Mutch, Etien Velikonja, Craig Bellamy, Tommy Smith, Frazier Campbell, Simon Lappin, Heidar Helguson and Kim Bo-Kyung.

Outlining the club’s financial position, directors of the club in their report said: “Whilst the dream of reaching the Premiership wasn’t realised, increased revenues and some improvement in operating performance was achieved. The club continues to face the challenging financial environment presented by the Championship competition, as illustrated by the operating loss year-on-year, despite significant turnover growth – these gains being absorbed by increased direct football costs.”

In their summary and outlook for City, directors added: “Through the continued support of our Malaysian investors we have invested in the playing squad and hope to see the benefit of that investment during the remainder of the season as we push for the desired aim of promotion and beyond.”

“For the 2012/13 season the club made a strategic decision to change the colour of its home strip from blue to red but retained the blue strip for away matches. Accompanied by a change in the club’s badge, the rebranding is seen by the club as a positive step in securing future commercial opportunities. The new investors have indicated that providing the business develops as planned, they will continue to support the club in the foreseeable future and provide additional finance in order that it can settle its liabilities.”

Many have interpreted that to mean its promotion or bust for Cardiff City this season, a view perhaps given credence by the lack of real commitment made in the Carling and FA Cup’s by the Bluebirds, who bowed out of both competitions to lowly opponents in the first round having fielded little more than their development squad, it’s a risky strategy given the two million plus pounds The Carling Cup final brought into the club last season.

Also to be worked into this season’s figures will be the 150 plus season tickets that were refunded to disenfranchised Cardiff City supporters who couldn’t stand to see as one put it “Their clubs history and tradition flushed away on the whimsical idea that red is more lucky than Blue.”

And the knock on effect on replica shirt sales is plainly obvious at every Bluebird game the red strip is in the minority. Those three factors alone mean that the 2012/2013 season’s figures are going to be at least £6million less than the 2011/2012 figures just announced. While, as of yet, there’s been no evidence offered forward of the increase in sales of replica shirts in the Asian market which the rebrand into red was purported to bring

The financial figures back up what most Cardiff City supporters feel – this season it really is imperative for The Bluebirds to be promoted, tradition, history, pride, millions of pounds and everything , but the kitchen sink have been thrown at the shot at “promotion to the promisedland” this season – The notion that Cardiff City aren’t promoted is simply unthinkable and sitting ten points clear of the chasing pack at the top of The Championship  it does all seem to be going to plan, but there are a lot of games to be played yet and every long time Bluebird supporter will tell you things are never plain sailing or easy for the club.

Aston Villa v West Ham United – Match Preview

As Billy Ocean once famously sang ‘when the going gets tough, the tough gets going’. It’s an expression that Paul Lambert and Aston Villa look to have adopted as they continue to scrap for their Premier League lives. It’s now eight games since Villa last tasted victory, that impressive 3-1 win at Liverpool, but signs that a revival is around the corner have been evident in recent weeks. Lambert’s men arguably deserved to take a point from the home defeat to Newcastle after an excellent second half display before sacrificing a two-goal lead in the dying embers at Everton. Villa’s weakness at set pieces was exposed again in stoppage time against the Toffees and improvement will need to be rapid if they’re to deal with the aerial threat posed by Andy Carroll. Cutting out those mistake will be vital if Christian Benteke’s goals are finally going to lead to a much needed win.

It’s almost a given that exploiting Villa’s set piece deficiencies will be at the forefront of Sam Allardyce’s plan to take three points back to East London. Carroll’s return to first team action will have pre-empted that especially after he scored the winning goal against Swansea to lift a weight from Allardyce’s shoulders after a sticky run over Christmas and into the New Year. Its also an opportunity to better an away record that has brought just eight points from a possible 36 on the road this season.

Team News

Ashley Westwood is struggling with a virus and could miss out for Aston Villa. Karim El Ahmadi and Fabian Delph have recovered from knee injuries and could possibly feature.

Modibo Maiga remains at the African Cup of Nations with Mali, while James Collins and George McCartney are still sidelined.

What the managers said…

“Has he doubled his value? Yes, by miles.  If you look at the figures being bandied about it’s not the figure I bought him for. When the guy came in people were saying to me ‘who is he and why are you going for someone from Genk?’ With what he’s done he’s a cult hero He’s only 22 and he’s got years and years ahead of him. He’s not at his peak, but what he’s done for me and for the club is fantastic.” Paul Lambert thinks Christan Benteke’s value has doubled since his £7 million move to Villa Park in the summer

“Not scoring at the right time mostly. The fact of the matter is that we’ve always had opportunities to score, but when we’ve failed to take them we’ve allowed the opposition to take advantage by scoring themselves. We then haven’t managed to retrieve that position. It’s always a difficult task to win a game of football when you go a goal down and much more difficult still when you’re away from home. It’s rare as a side playing in the Premier League for the first season to turn around a result when you lose the first goal. It can be done but it’s rare. We have to focus on keeping on a level playing field with Aston Villa and we have to try to be the team that scores the first goal.” Sam Allardyce bemoaned his side’s slow start to games and says they need to start taking the initiative (whufc.com)

Pre-match Fact: Aston Villa have failed to win their last 12 Premier League matches on a Sunday.

Prediction: Aston Villa 3-2 West Ham United

Everton ace set for Championship loan move

Championship side Watford could make Thomas Hitzlsperger as their 12th loan signing of the season as a bid to push for promotion.

The ex-German international who has a notoriously thunderous left strike is currently in talks with Watford over the loan.  The 30 year old has only managed nine appearances for Everton this after being released by Wolfsburg last season.  This will be a great opportunity for both parties as Hitzlsperger is no stranger to the English League.  With previous experiences at both Aston Villa and West Ham Hitzlsperger could provide Watford with the stability needed to see through promotion.

Watford controversially already have 11 players on loan, this is mainly due to owner Gino Pozzo’s stakes in Udinese in Italy and Grenada in Spain.  This is a great way of players of those clubs to gain vital experience, however the football league and rival managers have voiced their concerns over the acceptance of this.  As a result, the Football League will be imposing severe restrictions next season to make sure a team cannot exploit the loan system again.

Watford are currently in third, two points adrift of automatic promotion.

Double boost for Arsenal

Per Mertesacker and Tomas Rosicky will return for Arsenal against Everton tonight, but Lukasz Fabianski misses out.

Rosicky was forced to sit out the 3-1 victory over Norwich at the weekend with a hamstring problem but Wenger says it is not a serious one and he is back in the squad that takes on the Toffees.

Mertesacker had to serve a one-match suspension against the Canaries but also comes back in contention which means Thomas Vermaelen could again be on the bench while Nacho Monreal could return at left-back after being rested.

However Fabianski looks certain to miss out after taking a knock at the weekend.

“Fabianski is a major doubt but we will decide that tomorrow [Tuesday],” Wenger revealed in his pre-match press conference. “He got a kick in the rib.”

Meanwhile, Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski are both pressing for a recall after coming off the bench against Norwich, but midfielder Abou Diaby (knee) is a long-term absentee.

Tottenham Hotspur v Southampton: Match Preview

This is make or break for Tottenham. Last weeks disappointing 2-2 draw at Wigan left their Champions League dreams hanging in the balance. Spurs have a habit of falling at the final hurdle in seasons gone past and start a week of definition with the visit of Southampton. They face tough trips to Chelsea and Stoke next week and must pick up maximum from the Saints if they’re to maintain hope of staying in touch with the top-four. Andre Villas-Boas has to drill into his side the importance of making this home match count ahead of the showdown at Stamford Bridge.

Mauricio Pochettino can approach the season’s conclusion without the threat of relegation playing on his mind and that of his players. Their capitulation at home to West Brom last week aside, Southampton have been excellent during the second half of the campaign under the Argentine’s stewardship. Some stellar showings against the Premier League big boys have led many to admire Pochettino’s high tempo-pressing game and he’ll require his squad to produce another lung bursting effort if they’re to leave White Hart Lane with a victory under their belt.

Team News

Tottenham will have Moussa Dembele’s fitness assessed before kick-off as he struggles to shake off a hamstring injury, but Emmanuel Adebayor (knee) and Jake Livermore (hamstring) are both available.

Gaston Ramirez and Danny Fox both begin suspensions for Southampton after they were sent off against West Brom last week. Left back Luke Shaw has recovered from an ankle injury and should play.

What the managers said…

“I would be extremely surprised [if Bale left] because this is the assurance I have. In football anything can happen, it’s impossible to predict, but this is the assurance I have had from the club. The information that I have from the club is that the player is here to remain independent of the objectives of Champions League qualification being achieved or not.” Andre Villas-Boas is adamant Gareth Bale won’t leave Tottenham (Guardian)

“I think the last game that we played was one of the matches where we created the least number of chances so we have to be able to express all of the anger that we have from the West Bromwich game and channel that into a positive way for the game against Tottenham on Saturday. We have to be confident in our abilities and at one hundred per cent on the day so that we can win.” Mauricio Pochettino wants the right response from Southampton following defeat last week (saintsfc.co.uk)

The likes of Tottenham’s Paulinho could help set a trend

The irony of players from the world’s leading football nation failing, often spectacularly, in the game’s biggest and most popular product isn’t lost on anyone. Brazilians have set foot on European soil and lit up the game in a way that only they can, from Ronaldinho’s otherworldly talents guiding Barcelona to greatness, to Juninho Pernambucano carving out a reputation as the finest free kick specialist any of us have ever seen. The Premier League, however, has been seen as dangerous and unpredictable ground for those from Brazil.

It’s not to say there have been no success stories. Juninho Paulista springs to mind from his days with Middlesbrough, and Gilberto Silva and Edu enjoyed league title success with Arsenal. After that, you struggle to think up names who made a positive impression in the Premier League prior to the last few seasons.

[cat_link cat=”premiership” type=”tower”]

At Manchester United, Anderson has gone no way to achieving the goals that would have been set for him as a player during his days at Porto. His trophy cabinet is well-stocked, but he’s not the player most expected him to be. He often struggles, not just for a place in the United team but also for a sense of identity. Is he marketable as a clearly defined player? Is he good enough to be an all-rounder who does more than one job to a high enough level?

Lucas Leiva at Liverpool has certainly improved since he arrived as a Rafa Benitez signing in 2007. He’s developed well into a defensive midfielder, and his presence was undeniably missed when he suffered long-term injury. Though has the 26-year-old made such an impact that he can be deemed a categorical success in English football?

They aren’t the only ones. Denilson and Julio Baptista at Arsenal; Kleberson at Manchester United; Elano, Jo and Robinho at Manchester City.

Fernandinho and Paulinho have an opportunity to help set a new trend. David Luiz, provided he isn’t sold to Barcelona this summer, could have a fantastic career at Chelsea alongside compatriots Oscar and Ramires. If last season is anything to go by, United’s Rafael is set for a bright future in English football.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder may be weighed down by the sizeable transfer fee that was needed to acquire him from the Ukrainian heavyweights, but his ability and impact in high-profile games in the Champions League were there for all to see. Alongside Willian, Fernadinho was one of the key figures of Mircea Lucescu’s often enterprising team.

Fernandinho is labelled as a defensive midfielder but he does more than just hold his ground in the centre of the pitch. More akin to a technically proficient box-to-box midfielder, Fernandinho would launch attacks from deep, continue his runs into the box and often grab a goal for himself or further help in the assisting of one for a teammate.

The former Shakhtar midfielder does have the tools to be an exception to the rule in England. He’ll be in the right hands with Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City, and a midfield double pivot alongside Yaya Toure should help him quickly adjust to life in the Premier League.

The hype isn’t totally absent from Tottenham’s new signing either. Paulinho arrives with plenty of promise following a very good Confederations Cup. He has long been on the wanted list of some of Europe’s bigger clubs, and credit to Tottenham for winning the race for his signature.

Like his compatriots who ventured to these shores before him, Paulinho isn’t a bad player and should have a positive environment to succeed at White Hart Lane. But is the difference between failure and success as clear-cut as the climate, heavy schedule and good surroundings? As trivial as it may be, all of those factors do count towards the end product. It’s a matter of culture too, and bringing South Americans straight over to England has always been a risk, where the transition is far easier in, say, Spain.

There is already a familiar face in Sandro at Tottenham, and the pair could help to form a winning unit in Andre Villas-Boas’ midfield three. It will be a similar set up to what Paulinho is used to with the Brazilian national squad and it will more than help him win a place at next summer’s World Cup.

What we’re seeing now is a variation in what Brazil has to offer, with powerful midfielders playing alongside their creative counterparts. Gilberto Silva was a typical Premier League player in terms of build, but it wasn’t to say that only strong defensive midfielders could succeed in England.

The opening of the floodgates has allowed the Premier League to become a home as much as the leagues in Europe are. The fear and apprehension may be diminishing, as well as the likelihood for failure. As we’ve seen a wave of new Brazilians enter English football, stories like Anderson and Denilson are becoming the exception rather than the rule. Like in most cases, the very good players will almost always succeed, regardless of nationality. Though it’s also vitally important that clubs do all they can to offer a smooth transition.

Like the Brazilians of yesterday, Fernandinho and Paulinho will continue to push the door open for their countrymen to consider the Premier League as a very realistic option alongside La Liga and Serie A. The next step: a real Brazilian superstar.

Will Fernandinho and Paulinho continue to help set a new trend for Brazilians in the Premier League?

Michael Owen tips Chelsea for the Premier League title

With the start of the Premier League season less than a week away, former England international Michael Owen has taken to Sportlobster – the sports social network – to give his predictions on how he thinks each team will fair over the season and how the return of “The Special One” makes Chelsea his hot favourite to be crowned champions.

Owen will be making his football predictions via Sportlobster, his preferred social medium, every Saturday morning. Sportlobster is an interactive community, where sport lovers can receive custom news, write articles, follow fans or athletes, and pick up live score feeds – all tailored to individual sporting preferences.

Michael Owen said:

“It’s always fun guessing who will do well at the start of the season and Sportlobster offers football fans an opportunity to get competitive – and there’s not much that gets sports fans talking as much as the premier league.”

To celebrate the opening weekend of the season, Sportlobster users are being given the chance to win a pair of Premier League tickets. All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning, is to make your predictions at sportlobster.com/predictions and if you correctly identify more winners from the ten games than Michael, you will be entered into the draw.

Here’s what Michael Owen had to say about each of the clubs for the season ahead:

Arsenal:

“Arsenal’s prospects depend largely on their transfer activity, but if they don’t manage to secure a world-class striker, a top four position should still be achievable. In their first season Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski scored a combined 22 league goals, bettering Van Persie’s initial tally in England of four – but the addition to the squad of a more prolific striker could make a huge difference.

Aston Villa:

“Now Christian Benteke has signed a new long-term deal Villa should be looking to break into the top half of the table. Paul Lambert has assembled a young team and staying up last season will fill them with confidence, as will new signings Antonio Luna and Nicklas Helenius, the latter averaged a goal every two games for Danish team AaB last term.”

Cardiff City:

“Malky Mackay has shown some serious intent by splashing £7.5million on 20-year-old Andreas Cornelius, breaking Cardiff’s transfer record by some margin. He and Craig Bellamy, now 34, are central to Cardiff’s prospects. Despite winning the Championship they need to bolster the squad with Premier League experience. Staying up would be a wonderful achievement but it’s going to be a struggle.”

Chelsea:

“Chelsea are my favourites to win the league irrespective of transfer activity. The return of Jose Mourinho has transformed the atmosphere at Stamford Bridge. Mourinho has never lost at home in the Premier League and the ‘Special One’ thoroughly deserves his self-appointed title.”

Crystal Palace:

“It’s great to see Ian Holloway back in the Premier League and if Palace are to have a chance of staying up, Holloway’s experience will be crucial. Having been relegated with Blackpool he’ll be relying heavily on Glenn Murray, scorer of 31 goals last term.  A trying season followed by relegation looks likely.”

Everton:

“An already small squad is in danger of becoming further depleted if key men Fellaini and Baines leave the club. Roberto Martinez was the popular choice to replace Moyes but injury problems might end up costing his new squad dearly and make his job all the harder. Underrated Kevin Mirallas and new man Arouna Kone will be heavily relied upon in the final third but Baines and Fellaini may prove irreplaceable.”

Fulham:

“This time around I can’t foresee the Cottagers get out of the bottom half of the table. The end of the 2012/2013 season saw them struggle for form and an over-reliance on Dimitar Berbatov looks set to continue. New ownership provides the promise of investment in the squad and it looks necessary in a number of positions.”

Hull City:

“Hull City Tigers’ as they are newly dubbed suffer from a potentially fatal lack of experience. They limped to the finish line in the Championship, losing their last four games and that run looks likely to continue this time around. A core of talented young players like Joe Dudgeon and James Chester offer an array of hope but their prospects don’t look good.”

Liverpool:

“Much depends on star man Luis Suarez. If he goes it could be an uphill battle for Brendan Rogers who has urged the Liverpool fans to be patient over the summer months. Replacing him would be near-impossible and more than one forward replacement will have to be brought in to replicate his goals tally. If Suarez stays and a couple more signings join the ranks then the top four could even be within their sights.”

Man City:

“Again this year’s big spenders with the addition of Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo for a combined £90million. A lot will depend upon the new manager bedding in the new stars, while winning over the existing players. As Pellegrini has no experience managing in England, it will be interesting to watch how quickly he adapts. For me this won’t be Man City’s season unless they really hit the ground running.”

Man Utd:

“While United have the most stable squad, the club as a whole is going through a period of transition both in terms of the manager and the backroom staff. Much will depend on the form of Robin Van Persie and, if he hits the heights of last season, United can definitely expect to be in the running.”

Newcastle Utd:

“Heading into proceedings the Newcastle fans are perturbed about the return of Joe Kinnear. Much depends on the start Newcastle have. If a few results go against them I can envisage Kinnear and his staff taking the blame. Papiss Cisse’s eight goals and Newcastle’s measly two away wins last season are worrying statistics for the Magpies.”

Norwich City:

“Last season’s 11th place finish for Norwich must be respected, but finishing any higher this year is highly unlikely. The relegation scrap remains a possibility, but the club’s new record signing, Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, from Sporting Lisbon should be able to propel the Canaries out of the danger zone and towards the top half of the table.”

Southampton:

“A reward for being the top English goal scorer in the Premier League last season has come in the form of an England call-up for Rickie Lambert and he’ll be a key figure once more for Southampton. However, an over-reliance on Lambert could be dangerous. The problem defence has been shored up with the arrival of Dejan Lovren (£8.5m) and manager Pochettino should now be more familiar with the ins and outs of the English game.”

Stoke City:

“Another club in real transition. The Tony Pulis style of play is deeply entrenched at Stoke City and with it came great stability for a lengthy period. A good squad of players will have to adapt to Mark Hughes and it will be interesting to observe how much he alters the existing footballing style.”

Sunderland:

“Sunderland are in trouble this season. Away from home they concede too many goals and they are overly dependent on Steven Fletcher’s goals. His previous season was cut short and Sunderland escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth. Sunderland fans would be first to admit they would take anything other than relegation this season and I’m sure their charismatic manager would agree survival is the primary aim.”

Swansea:

“Swansea’s rise to prominence has been incredible. They have secured their top-flight status but their ascent must come to end at some point. It’s possible the likes of Michu over-performed last season so it’ll be interesting to see if they can replicate that form. I fear it could be unrealistic to expect the same from them this time around. A mid-table finish feels about right.”

Tottenham Hotspur:

“Spurs need to find the balance between adding to the squad and retaining the existing core. They are not shy of spending on new recruits but potentially more important is holding onto Gareth Bale among others and pushing on to the next level, which is securing a Champions League spot.”

West Bromwich Albion

“They will be reliant upon new man, Nicolas Anelka, tasked with replacing top-scorer Romelu Lukaku who has returned to Chelsea after his tally of 17 goals last season – more than any Chelsea player managed during 2012/13. West Brom over-performed last season so it’s going to be difficult for them to get into the top half of the table this time around.”

West Ham Utd:

“West Ham need not fear the relegation zone this season. The once £35million man, Andy Carroll, has signed a permanent contract which might just propel The Hammers into the top half of the table. They just might be one of the surprise packages of the 2012/13 season.”

Arsenal chief pokes fun at Tottenham

Arsenal’s chief executive Ivan Gazidis, has made fun of Gareth Bale’s transfer to Real Madrid, according to the Daily Star.

At the Arsenal AGM meeting yesterday, Gazidis stated that Spurs had sold their best player to one of Arsenal’s top rivals and that they will find it hard to break into the top four.

“Unfortunately he [Gareth Bale] doesn’t play for Tottenham Hotspur,” he said.

“He now plays for one of our rivals.”

Arsenal who currently sit on top of the Premier League, haven’t finished below Tottenham since the 1994/95 season when Chris Armstrong and Jürgen Klinsmann were banging in goals for Spurs.

But the heartache of losing out on Champions League football for the last two seasons will be in the mind of every Tottenham fan, and with the signings of Erik Lamela, Cristian Eriksen, Paulinho, Nacer Chadli, Roberto Soldado, Vlad Chiriches and Étienne Capoue, Spurs are hoping that this can be their Champions League season.

Sunderland the giantkillers?

They may be at the bottom of the Premier League at the moment, but Sunderland are fast becoming English football’s very own giantkillers.

It’s perhaps a little strange to be labeling a Premier League outfit with such a title, particularly when they would be seen as giants themselves to other opposition.

But the way in which they have progressed into the Capital One Cup Semi-Finals and picked up some very important points in the Premier League against the division’s top sides, means they have no doubt earned the right to their newly found nickname.

Taking their league form into consideration, they were not expected to beat Chelsea in Round 5, nor were they expected to beat the in-form, and hugely impressive, Southampton in Round 4.

However, as they prepare to face another giant in the shape of Manchester United in the Semi-Finals, you would be mad to write off their chances of reaching the Final.

New boss Gus Poyet has got the Black Cats playing some nice football plus the players are more organised, they appear to be more positive and they are quickly improving under the Uruguayan’s guidance.

And their successes over the likes of Southampton and Chelsea in the Capital One Cup and Manchester City and Newcastle in the Premier League have all come since Poyet took charge.

They have also come close to victories over Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, which means they are more than capable of competing with so called ‘giants’ of English football.

Their Semi-Final meeting with United gives Sunderland the perfect opportunity to continue their exploits over the bigger teams and reach a Capital One Cup Final. It gives them the opportunity to take the attention away from what has so far been a disappointing Premier League campaign.

David Moyes’ United team have not exactly been at their best so far this season, either. A number of disappointing results both at home and away from Old Trafford has given every other Premier League side the belief that they can register a victory over a side that used to be so hard to break down.

With that in mind, Poyet will believe his Sunderland side have every chance of causing yet another Capital One Cup upset and another ‘giant killing’ this season.

Furthermore, by the time the first-leg comes around at the Stadium of Light, the Black Cats may have managed to pull themselves away of the relegation danger they currently find themselves in, which would arguably give them more confidence to spring a surprise on United.

Should they pull off another giant killing in the Semi-Finals then they could face the blue half of Manchester in the final. If that’s the way the Semi-Finals pan out then you’d be silly to bet against Sunderland lifting the Capital One Cup trophy at Wembley in February.

Poyet seems to get the best out of them against the bigger teams and he’ll certainly be able to do the same in the Semi-Finals and the Final, should they get there.

Ince hints that he could stay at Crystal Palace

Tom Ince has suggested that he may make his loan move to Crystal Palace a permanent one at the end of the season.

The England U-21 star completed a temporary switch to Selhurst Park on transfer deadline day, rejecting rumoured interest from the likes of Liverpool.

With his contract at Blackpool due to expire in less than six months’ time, it appears unlikely that the wide-man will return to Bloomfield Road, with a full-time move to the Premier League almost a foregone conclusion.

His father, Paul, has already hinted that Palace may be a stepping-stone for his son, and that he feels a big transfer will happen in the not too distant future.

Some have speculated that he may look for such a deal in the summer, but Ince says that he could stay in South London beyond the end of the season:

“Steve Parish was great and worked ever so hard to get the deal over the line,” he is quoted by the Daily Mail.

“The Blackpool chairman is not the easiest guy to work with and Steve worked his magic. I am thankful for that.

“As a young player, you always want to play at the top level but my dad and I sat down, and it’s all about timing and planning.

“It got to the stage where I thought now is the right time to go and play in the Premier League.

“If, in the summer, I stay on, then I’ve had that three months or so learning what the Premier League is like.

“It’s all a bit new to me but at the same time I’m really excited to get going.

“If Palace like what they see from me then we’ll sit down in the summer and see what’s available.”
