The enigmatic boxing superstar has reacted to Wrexham’s 6-0 mauling of Morecambe in their latest League Two fixture – with Fury a native of the Lancashire town. He has previously launched a bid to complete a takeover of the seaside-based outfit, which would have put him in direct competition with Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in the chairmanship stakes.

For now, Fury wants to exact revenge of sorts by squaring up to Reynolds’ famous Deadpool character in the ring. He has asked his loyal legion of social media followers to choose who would win in a fight if he were to trade blows with the Marvel superhero.

Fury had revealed back in September, after seeing Wrexham join Morecambe in League Two, that he intended to “call out Ryan Reynolds” when attending a meeting between the two clubs. He has been as good as his word, with the larger-than-life 35-year-old currently readying himself for a unification fight against Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia on February 17, 2024.

Wrexham will face Morecambe again shortly after that battle in the Middle East – on March 9 – with it possible that Fury will be in attendance at Mazuma Mobile Stadium. Until then, he is reflecting on a crushing defeat for the Shrimps that saw Red Dragons striker Paul Mullin add another hat-trick to his collection.

'Mind boggling' Lucas Paqueta can be Kevin De Bruyne's heir at Man City as Pep Guardiola looks to the future

City need to look to the future after the Belgian suffered a serious injury and the Brazilian midfielder is shaping up to be a potential successor

Manchester City waved goodbye to two modern greats after the Champions League final as Ilkay Gundogan and then Riyad Mahrez departed. The club have been considering how to replace them all summer, but they might now have to think about a succession plan for another player – arguably their best ever.

Kevin De Bruyne was as crucial as any player in City’s run to the treble, but he admitted he had spent the last two months of the season carrying a hamstring injury. In the first half of the Champions League final, that same hamstring snapped. Two months later, 22 minutes into City’s first game of the Premier League season against Burnley, it gave way again.

And now the Belgian could be out for up to four months after Pep Guardiola confirmed he had suffered a "serious injury" and revealed that the club have to decide whether or not he has to undergo surgery. It means that City are likely to be without their most consistent and inspirational player until the start of 2024.

It is a huge blow for City and leaves them with a huge void to fill immediately. But even before City's worst fears were confirmed by Guardiola, they were beginning to realise that De Bruyne's magnificent career is starting to wind down.

The 32-year-old showed last season that he still has plenty to offer, having contributed to 42 goals last season and providing more assists than anyone else in the Premier League. But he is now only set to play half of this season. And even if he returns from injury as good as new, will he be able to play 45 games per season again?

The key to City’s success under Guardiola is their aptitude for forward planning, their ability to think three or four transfer windows ahead. And after enjoying one of the greatest playmakers the Premier League has ever seen for eight years, City must now confront an eventual future without De Bruyne, as well as looking to fill the immediate voids left by Gundogan and Mahrez. So step forward, Lucas Paqueta.

Getty ImagesMoving away from traditional wingers

When news of City’s interest in Paqueta emerged earlier this month, it came as a big surprise. Even after losing Gundogan, Guardiola still has a plethora of central midfielders to work with: Rodri, Kalvin Phillips, Bernardo, Mateo Kovacic, James McAtee and also potentially Phil Foden, who thrived in De Bruyne’s role when he replaced the Belgian in the Champions League final.

What he does not have in abundance is right wingers, however. Bernardo has played on the right plenty of times but he does not have the incisiveness of Mahrez and in the Community Shield he was kept under wraps by Jurrien Timber.

Cole Palmer came off the bench to give City the lead in that game, scoring a goal reminiscent of Mahrez, but the England Under-21 international was used sparingly last season and there are doubts over whether Guardiola trusts him enough to give him a regular spot in the team.

What the interest in Paqueta suggested was that, rather like he did last year by playing centre-backs at full-back, Guardiola is moving away from traditional wingers. That process had already begun with Jack Grealish, who holds on to the ball for long periods and is far more patient in his dribbling than most wingers, and with phasing Mahrez out of the team (the Algerian started fewer than half of City’s league games in the last two seasons).

AdvertisementGetty ImagesAn ordinary campaign but a soaring price

Paqueta might not have been top of City fans' list when it came to replacements for Gundogan or De Bruyne. He has had a down-and-up career trajectory, having a disappointing spell with AC Milan – his first European club.

He then started to realise his potential with Lyon, scoring 21 times and getting 13 assists in 80 games, which prompted West Ham to pay a club record £54 million ($68m) to sign him in the summer of 2022.

Paqueta did not exactly pull up trees in his first year with the Hammers, ending the campaign with five goals and seven assists in 42 games. The idea that City were willing to bid £70m ($89m) for the Brazilian after a fairly ordinary campaign was hard to believe.

The suggestion that they are willing to even meet West Ham’s valuation of £95m ($121m) is even more baffling, especially after they turned away from a deal for Declan Rice after his price went beyond that same figure.

Getty Images'He has so many different tools'

City ultimately have the financial muscle to make such a move and even if the price might sound high, it is easy to see why Guardiola is attracted to Paqueta. He is wonderfully versatile and can play in a variety of positions, either as a No.8, which he usually occupies for Brazil, or as a No.10, where he spent the majority of last season with West Ham. But he can also play out wide and for Brazilian giants Flamengo he played on the right and left wings.

“He always had the talent. The thing I always liked was that he was extremely versatile. He can play in a number of positions. With me, he played as a No 10, on both flanks. When we faced defensive opponents, I sometimes played him deeper in midfield,” Paqueta’s former Flamengo coach Ze Ricardo told .

“He even played up front on occasion after stepping up to the first team. He has this big capacity to adapt. He has so many different tools, which allow him to find a way out of any difficult situation on the pitch.”

Paqueta could comfortably fit into Gurardiola’s vision for his midfielders, who he likes to see drift all over the pitch and interchange places in order to become less predictable.

One of the Brazilian's main assets is his ability to play precise through balls, releasing attacking team-mates on the counter, often in the middle of the pitch. Just take his assist for Jarrod Bowen’s winning goal against Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final, his most important contribution for West Ham.

Paqueta threaded the ball towards the forward just before crossing the halfway line, setting Bowen free towards goal unchallenged. Bowen's finish restored West Ham's lead and sent David Moyes charging down the touchline in an instantly iconic celebration.

City played more on the counter last season than in previous campaigns and the dart Bowen made behind the defence is the type of run that Erling Haaland loves to make. If Paqueta does eventually move to City, it is easy to see him having a productive partnership with the Norwegian.

The Brazilian also has breathtaking dribbling ability. Witness his assist for Manuel Lanzini in the 3-1 win against Leeds, when he danced his way past four different defenders while making his way along the byline, dragging opponents all over the place to tee up the Argentine. After that goal, team-mate Vladimir Coufal said Paqueta was “playing football like he’s dancing on the Copacabana”.

Liverpool player ratings vs Newcastle: Deadly Darwin Nunez digs out disastrous Reds defence as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk turn in terrible showings

The Reds appeared doomed to defeat after going a goal and a man down at St James' Park, but the Uruguayan sub turned the game on its head

Darwin Nunez came off the bench to earn 10-man Liverpool a dramatic 2-1 victory at Newcastle on Sunday afternoon with a sensational late double that left St James Park in a state of shock.

The Reds looked to have gifted their hosts three points during a three-minute, first-half implosion that saw Anthony Gordon open the scoring after an atrocious error from Trent Alexander-Arnold before Virgil van Dijk got himself sent off for taking out Alexander Isak on the edge of the area.

However, Newcastle failed to kill the game, with Alisson making a stunning save from Miguel Almiron, who also struck the post with a second-half effort.

Liverpool grew in confidence the longer the game wore on, with Jurgen Klopp's changes making a big impact on the proceedings – none more so than Nunez, who took advantage of Sven Botman error to level matters before then producing another excellent finish after being slipped through by Mohamed Salah in injury-time.

GOAL rates Liverpool's players from St James' Park…

Goalkeeper & Defence

Alisson Becker (8/10):

Betrayed by his back-line once again for the goal but kept Liverpool in the game with the save of the season so far, when he somehow managed to deflect Almiron's close-range drive onto the bar.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (2/10):

Lucky not to have been sent off early on, after fouling Gordon just moments after picking up a needless booking for flicking the ball away, and then gifted Newcastle the opener by mis-controlling a simple pass from Salah in midfield. Even his usually precise passing was off.

Joel Matip (7/10):

Drafted into the starting line-up because of an injury to Konate and acquitted himself well during a heroic rearguard action.

Virgil van Dijk (2/10):

Shocking from the skipper, with Van Dijk stupidly getting himself sent off for going through Isak just outside the area. No chance of this red card being overturned.

Andy Robertson (6/10):

Played with his usual level of passion and tenacity, and also saw plenty of the ball down the left flank even after Van Dijk's dismissal, though if his end product wasn't great.

AdvertisementGetty Midfield

Dominik Szoboszlai (6/10):

Started very brightly, looking more than capable of making something happen with his passing and forays forward, but his threat was unsurprisingly curbed after the red card. He never stopped fighting, though, and deserved to end up on the winning team.

Wataru Endo (6/10):

Used the ball well and covered a huge amount of ground in a desperate attempt to keep Newcastle at bay before being taken off, exhausted, just before the hour mark.

Alexis Mac Allister (6/10):

Put himself about, making numerous interceptions and challenges before running out of steam in the closing stages.

Getty Attack

Mohamed Salah (6/10):

Saw so little of the ball for long periods but he worked tirelessly for the cause and his effort was rewarded when Nunez finished off his late through-ball emphatically.

Cody Gakpo (5/10):

Had a half-chance shortly before the break but never looked like scoring at any stage, so it was no surprise to see him subbed.

Luis Diaz (5/10):

The unlucky forward to be withdrawn immediately after the red card. It was a real shame, too, as Diaz had gone closest to scoring for Liverpool, after a characteristically mazy dribble into the area.

GettySubs & Manager

Joe Gomez (7/10):

Came on in place of Van Dijk and did enough to suggest that he should prove a decent replacement for the now-suspended Dutchman.

Harvey Elliott (6/10):

Replaced Endo shortly after the interval and injected some much-needed energy to a flagging midfield.

Diogo Jota (6/10):

Somewhat surprisingly dropped to the bench after netting against Bournemouth last week but was introduced in the 58th minute and added a different dimension to the forward line.

Darwin Nunez (9/10):

Only took over up front for the last 13 minutes of the game but earned Liverpool an incredible victory with two absolutely fantastic finishes that will do wonders for his confidence after starting the first three games of the season on the bench.

Jarell Quansah (N/A):

Brought on alongside Nunez late on and didn't look overawed at all.

Jurgen Klopp (8/10):

Credit it where it's due, Klopp's bold and offensive substitutions paid off spectacularly, and you could see how much this victory meant to him at full-time. Sensational.

After coming out second-best to an injury-ravaged Newcastle, Mauricio Pochettino was naturally left "upset". Alexander Isak scored the opener but Raheem Sterlingensured that they were back on level terms soon after scoring a brilliant free kick. However, after the break, the Magpies upped the ante and Jamaal Lascelles made the most of the inspired start and put his team back in the lead. After Silva's howler, things went further south for Chelsea as Reece James was handed his marching orders. Ten minutes later, Anthony Gordon scored the fourth of the match for Newcastle to seal a memorable evening for the fans at St. James' Park.

Getty Images1Alisson | Liverpool | £6m

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson is the joint most expensive goalkeeper on the game and although he conceded more than in any other season with the Reds last term, it should be a different story in 2021-22.

Indeed, the return of Virgil van Dijk should prove significant in boosting their chances of more clean sheets this campaign, with the club's Brazilian No.1, who had his own injury issues, looking to improve on his 140-point haul from last season – only the joint-sixth best in the league.

AdvertisementPuma2Ederson | Manchester City | £6m

Another of the joint most expensive goalkeepers on the game, the beauty of having Ederson in your team is that he's very rarely rotated out of the starting XI.

Indeed, Pep Guardiola is renowned for chopping and changing his team from game to game although the Brazilian, who has won the Premier League Golden Glove award two years in a row, should rack up a more than healthy match total.

Getty Images3Edouard Mendy | Chelsea | £6m

Edouard Mendy had an impressive first season in English football, with the Chelsea goalkeeper having established himself as the No.1 at Stamford Bridge under both Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel.

He scored 140 points in the 2020-21 season, keeping 16 clean sheets, and he looks an appealing option heading into the new campaign, with Chelsea having looked increasingly assured at the back under their German head coach.

Alongside Lionel Messi, Emiliano Martinezproved to be Argentina's hero at the Copa America and that won't have come as a surprise to Fantasy Premier League fans, given his incredible domestic campaign with Aston Villa.

The 28-year-old was the highest-scoring goalkeeper in the game in 2020-21, recording 186 points – and 27 bonus points – just one point short of Brad Friedel's record FPL haul.

Seagulls head coach De Zerbi has been linked with the Catalan side but a report in Spanish publication Sport says it will not be easy to recruit him. Therefore, the Blaugrana's search to replace Xavi, who is stepping down from the role this summer, is likely to continue.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesTHE EXPLANATION

The report states Barca are likely to be unwilling to pay De Zerbi's exit clause, which is approximately €15 million (£12.8m), due to the club's precarious finances. Moreover, Liverpool – who are keen to find a replacement for outgoing manager Jurgen Klopp – are keeping tabs on the Italian and if they were to sign the former Sassuolo boss they would need to act soon.

De Zerbi – who joined Brighton in September 2022, led them to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season and has guided them to the last 16 of the Europa League this term – has a contract that runs until 2026 at the Amex.

WHAT NEXT?

While Barcelona continue their search for a new manager, on the pitch Xavi will hope his side, who sit third in La Liga, can beat Athletic Club on Sunday night. The defending champions can close the gap to leaders Real Madrid to six points with a win.

Pedri is the epitome of cool! Barcelona winners, losers & ratings as Liga leaders grind down Getafe

Star midfielder Pedri capped a dominant display with the only goal of the game as the Liga leaders extended their advantage over Real Madrid.

Pedri was the star of the show as Barcelona beat Getafe 1-0 to move six points clear at the top of La Liga, for the time being at least.

The visitors proved as physical as expected, treating both Pedri and Gavi to a series of kicks and trips for the majority of the game.

The Blaugrana had few chances, as a result, but took their one gaping opportunity 35 minutes in, when Pedri converted a cross from Raphinha.

Barca also needed some help from Marc Andre ter Stegen, who made two crucial stops to keep Getafe out.

But there could have perhaps been an extra goal or two for Barca, had Franck Kessie and later Ansu Fati showed more composure inside the box.

Still, it was a mostly steady showing, with Pedri and Gavi ensuring that the Blaugrana maintained pole position in the title race…

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Pedri:

The young Spaniard gets better to watch with each passing game, and is becoming an increasingly versatile midfielder. Last week, as Barca won the Spanish Super Cup, he was a pure attacking midfielder, getting into advanced positions with a defensive duo behind him. This time out, he was a box-to-box no.8, winning tackles, breaking up play and holding everything together. In a contest that required composure, Pedri was the epitome of cool. It helped, of course, that the 20-year-old also grabbed the winner, meeting Raphinha's cross with a well-timed slide. But his impact here was bigger than the scoreline suggests.

Sergi Roberto:

Roberto is an odd fit in this Barca squad. At 30, he's a few years ahead of the young core steadily developing in front of him. He's also not as quick or agile as the kind of advanced full-back Xavi prefers. But he's experienced, reads the game with aplomb, and can always be counted on to put in a shift. With Ronald Araujo rested, and Jules Kounde shifted to centre-back, Roberto filled in at right-back wonderfully. There were one or two scary moments, highlighted by a misjudgment on a Getafe counter-attack that almost saw a goal go in. But it was otherwise a solid 77 minute showing, which is exactly what Barca needed from their veteran.

Sergio Busquets:

Seven hundred appearances and counting. Not bad. The captain has now been a first-team regular for over 10 years and he was as reliable as ever on his milestone appearance for the Blaugrana. Busquets touched the ball more than any Barca midfielder, completed 92 per cent of his passes, and made seven recoveries. He seldom dominates games and certainly doesn't have the legs he used to, but in scrappy, testy contests like these, the ageing Spanish midfielder is a real difference-maker. Busquets might not have too many more showings in a Barca kit; a summer exit seems likely. This game, then, was a reminder of what Barca might miss.

AdvertisementGettyThe Losers

Jordi Alba:

Is the left-back slowly being phased out? It certainly seems like it. Alba ceded his starting spot to Alejandro Balde for the second time in three games, and simply wasn't on the same level as his positional rival when he was brought on in the second half. This was by no means a terrible showing from Alba. He was steady in possession, eager to get forward, and lashed one shot on goal. But his athleticism is waning, while Balde looks to be rounding into a more complete full-back. There's something a bit sad about watching a club legend see his playing time reduced, but Alba's days as a guaranteed starter appear numbered.

Real Madrid:

There are relatively few home fixtures in which Barca might drop points, but this is usually one of them. Getafe are very difficult to beat. Furthermore, with Robert Lewandowski still suspended and the visitors set up with their usual defensive grit, this was undoubtedly a potential banana skin for the Blaugrana. But they found a way to win, which is a blow for Real Madrid, who will likely have hoped Getafe could have done them a favour ahead of their evening encounter with Athletic Club, particularly with a trip to the Club World Cup round the corner.

GettyBarcelona Ratings: Defence

Marc Andre ter Stegen (7/10):

Made one crucial save to hold on to a 1-0 lead late in the first half. Did it again in the second, and exercised some clever gamesmanship late on.

Sergi Roberto (7/10):

Has made it clear that he wants a new deal, but will likely be a squad player going forward. Still, did well enough here to suggest he can fill in whenever needed.

Jules Kounde (7/10):

Impressive in the air, reliable on the ball, and opened up his stride to make a few recovering tackles. One of the best in Europe when he's on it.

Andreas Christensen (6/10):

Not the most assured showing, and left Barca vulnerable on the counter once or twice. Removed after 45 minutes with a hamstring issue.

Alejandro Balde (7/10):

Preferred to Jordi Alba, a selection choice that may well become common as the season goes on. Relentlessly bombed down the left. Taken off at half-time after a good shift.

Gavi (7/10):

Did all the dirty work in midfield, flying into tackles and causing a sort of controlled chaos. Was solid on the ball, too, and had some lovely moments of link-up play with the front three.

Sergio Busquets (7/10):

Celebrated his 700th Barca appearance with a satisfying win. Solid as ever.

Pedri (8/10):

Scored the winner, controlled the game, and kept his head despite getting kicked all over the place. The best player on the pitch.

He has continued to star for Saudi Arabian employers Al-Nassr this season, while he is up to 125 goals for Portugal after helping to fire them to Euro 2024 qualification. As long as he can steer clear of injury, Ronaldo should still be going strong in 2025 and beyond.

People say I’m going to play on until I’m 40 or 41 years old. I don’t set these targets. It’s a question of just enjoying the moment, which is a good moment. I feel good.
